DYNAMIC SURFACES: NATURAL PHENOMENA AS SPACE

MODIFIERS

Location: Caracas, Venezuela.Year: 2014

Type: Pavillion

Tutor: Miguel BraceliUniversidad Central de Venezuela

Page 16: daniel rey - architecture portfolio

The project started with the exploration of how naturalphenomena interact with surfaces, how they change and become space transformers, which is the result of archi-tecture. The intention is to produce an ephemeralpavilion, which will be as a manifesto to a flexible archi-tecture, dynamic, and energized by naturalphenomena, leading to the creation of sensory spaces where art and architecture are merged. Process Start a search for examples of art and architecture works on surfaces that are energized by natural phenomena and create spaces for experimentation purposes. Then, these examples are analyzed and interpreted to create vi-sual patterns, ways of solving the problem, building solu-tions and come together with the knowledge and inten-tions that are being sought. Wind is determined as the main phenomenon of influ-

ence, hence it begins by designing the principal surface component, which is the main grain of what will be the surface. A reflective piece of lightweightaluminium, 50 cm wide by 12.5 cm high, and it will fold to join the other end half, to support the tube in the center that hold it, it may rotate about its own central axis. The possible configurations of these parts are then stud-ied to form a single surface all together. From the “mod-ule A” and a “module B” is obtained a simple AB rhythm, forming the interleaving parts like a tissue forms.

CategoriesFlexibility is one of the intentions present in the project, and the feature that are naturalphenomena that activate these surfaces, a number of cat-egories of possible configurations presented in different landscapes was created. This way poetic images can be created, suggestive of the possible architecture trans-formed in various places.

Natural Phonomena

Page 17: daniel rey - architecture portfolio

The categories are: attachment, compound, and inde-pendent. These pavilion configurations are always pre-sented in two possible landscapes: natural and urban. And so as the dependent variable becomes the pavilion, and climatic characteristics, such as light and wind pres-ent themselves in the landscape, diverse atmospheres in the pavilion emerge.

The CubeFrom these categories, only one was chosen to develop depth in a given area: The cube, which is the independent urban category. Like an architectural element that is in-serted into a square, the void of the city, will generate new dynamics of public space, and how it is transformed by the wind. Giving rise to countless events that may occur beyond the senses, it can be a space to hold workshops, to have a look at the city. But mainly it is to make obvious something that is present. The wind. A set of moving shadows depending on wind intensity

and produce a movement in the form of a wave in the wa-ter, or at some other time the wind has only one direction and all the surface parts points to this direction, then the surface tends to disappear when the viewer is watching from a parallel view to the wind direction. An architectural fact, an innumerable set of sensory possibilities that are created in the spaces of the pavilion, night and day, and its all energized by a source that is never-ending and ev-er-changing.

A HOSPITAL FOR GENOA

In Genoa, Italy, there’s an artificial part of the city that fac-es the sea, and does not allow the inhabitants to be in contact with the sea. A big infrastructure is under con-struction, a highway that will further separate Conrniglia-no with the artificial land that faces the sea.

Exercise Two possibilities: Designing a theater, or a hospital in the area is proposed as a project. Idealize a masterplan to help solve the problems in the area, give value to the ex-isting Villa Durazzo Bombini, which is surrounded by ur-ban development that doesn’t highlight its architectural values . The option of designing a hospital is chosen be-cause for the complexity and challenge of a project of its magnitude.

Analysis Different categories of analysis to understand the dynam-ics, the green areas, and the relationships were estab-lished in the place to begin the process of making ideas for improvement. Into this planning, the Villa Durazzo

Bombini is found, which was taken as a measurement unit, to subdivide the extent of the area that continued to the sea, this module was called A. The urbanized part, which lies between the railway line and the new highway, were established pre-existing connections and expanded green city, along with the town, as a prelude to the area beyond the highway, where the port was, that would be the future of the hospital and park to Genova. Following the subdivisions from villa’s proportions, the Hospital was placed, the desk was modified, decisions that came out from the principles axis in the place. There is an important axis leading from the Villa, through the flask, and then through a public corridor that creates the hospital, and creates a very generous public space in shadow between the building and the sea, and finally this axis arrives into the city park, where Cornigliano is reunit-ed with the sea. The public space design was thought to lead to the area where the green Cornigliano is reunited with the sea, with priority attached to the dock to always have sea view cor-ridors.

The project is based on the design of a thermal baths and a sports complex for San Giorgio, to recover the rbanists and architectural values lost over the last years . There are certain elements that must be rescued, including the tow-er that served as protection and access to the bridge of Mantova, and the natural area near the lake that is a flood area full of trees.

In the analysis of the place emerge lines drawn from the ancient city, lines that form a pentagon and adapt to to-pography, one of the vertices of said figure is formed by this tower known as “Sparafucile”.

Masterplan The idea is to return the vertices which formed the ancient town of San Giorgio at some point, and locate viewpoints in everyone of them, except in the existing tower, which will be rehabilitated as a viewpoint, this is the principal one, for its location and heritage value. Then the edges are turned into roads, where people run and go on bikes as part of public space drawn by the old city.

Thermal Baths and sports complex One of the edges connected to the tower ‘Sparafucile’ will be the only one built, that is supported just behind the flooded area, an elongated prism is set down, formed only by their horizontal planes, which will connect the old tow-er the new viewpoint, and it will work as a project’s spine.

The volumes along this spine will fit within the sloping topography as it rises, shaping the landscape surround it. There are 4 volumes in reinforced concrete, which will house swimming pools, and the thermal baths, these vol-umes are connected through bridges coming out perpen-dicular to the largest spine. A series of courtyards are generated between the volumes and the main spine, so it seems that landscape and architecture find a common ground. On the other side of the complex, in the flood-plain, is an area of giant trees that make for the perfect façade of the project.

TRANSFORMATIONS IN PUBLIC SPACE

Location: Brion Square, CaracasYear: 2012

Type: Public space

Tutor: Miguel BraceliUniversidad Central de Venezuela

Page 38: daniel rey - architecture portfolio

Intro

In public space countless transformations occur, this ex-ercise looks to identify these transformations, place them on a map following a scientific method, and generate the project guidelines from the mapping.

The Place Plaza Brion Square is a complicated place, before it was a great avenue that was closed to give way to Sabana Grande Boulevard. Today it is a square with an irregular shape, where the boulevard ends and the Ave. Francisco de Miranda begins. There are various formal and infor-mal activities that are juxtaposed as layers, such as large flows of people, because of the existing of a bus station and the Metro. Identification of the transformationsInformal activities were identified in the square, such as food stalls, people dancing, awnings, school fairs, con-certs and meetings pallets, so divide them into two cate-gories: temporary and permanent.

Mapping These phenomena were placed on the map, each activity was identified with an icon, and with color the areas influ-enced by the phenomena, and the senses stimulated with these transformations.

The Project By having all this information about the transformation on the map, in conjunction with the formal knowledge of the place, it was decided to design a belt that holds all those spontaneous and temporary programs, and place it on the edge of the square, leaving an empty space in the center, and so these phenomena take a formal character, and get organized, the belt would be an architectural ele-ment that recognize the irregular edge of the square. This element takes place at several levels, depending on the program and hierarchy, some are located at level 0, and others in the higher levels. Finally, it would be held in one of the demolished buildings a cultural center that would go hand in hand with the belt, making itself a place full of diversity programs for public space, leaving the square to be and to circulate.

The project begins with the analysis of a residential build-ing located in Copenhagen, to understand the idea behind the project, the design decisions, its geometry, materials and the implementation of the building. Then, a series of proposals were made for multifamily housing in different scenarios, bars, and horizontal mass. The bar option was finally selected and developed.

Implementation with a trapezoidal block coming up with a steep slope, lo-cated in Sarria, Caracas, two L’s were used, one of which shall be located parallel and perpendicular to the direc-tion of two block’s streets, the other L will be parallel and perpendicular to the direction of one of the block’s street. Thus, giving the possibility of creating an internal space, bridging the gap from the ground floor of the block with the upper floors, and the ever-changing perspectives, thanks to the implementation that lends a sense of dyna-mism to the project.

The BuildingThe program aimed to satisfy the needs of different us-ers: a large family, a young couple, a bachelor, and a stu-dent. With this, the idea was to build homes as a Tetris Game, where everything fit together, and could multiply. The main idea was to make appartments with the bene-fits of a house, the user will have gardens in their homes,

that space, ventilate and illuminate the house doubled in height. Downstairs it was designed a commerce area, generating public space in the area. The material used was steel, it was an opportunity to learn new construction techniques. Everything was done under a grid of 90 x 90 cm for an easy distribution of household spaces, generat-ing a perfect module to locate the structure so it does not interfere with the parking lots.
