print

Print was my first love: the weight of the paper,

the feel of it on my fingertips, the easy turn of the page,

the brightness, the bleed of the colors into the fibers.

Saddle-stitched, perfect-bound, accordion-folded. Embossed, dull aqueous spot varnish.

Newsletters, pamphlets, books, reports, magazines, cards and more —

long live paper.

Introducing ...

I come by the name of the Red, White and Blue Grandma for a very good reason ... my

4th of July decorations and party supplies are second only to those I have collected for

Christmas. I was thrilled to find a flag Jello mold ... but the first use was a disaster! I

quickly realized this special dessert could not hold up for a family picnic on what had to

have been a record heat wave across the Midwest. happily, this tribute to our country

fares better!

Old Glory Fruit Pizza Cake

Prep Time: 20 minutes (ready in 2 hours 45 minutes) , 24 servings

Cake 1 18.25 oz. white cake mix 1 1/4 cups water 1/4 cup oil 2 eggs

Topping 2 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese 1 7 oz. jar (1 1/2 cups) marshmallow crème 1 cup fresh blueberries 3 cups fresh raspberries

1. heat oven to 350°F. Spray 15x10x1 inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Prepare cake mix as directed on package, using water, oil and eggs. Pour batter into sprayed pan.

2. Bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan for 30 minutes or until completely cooled.

3. In medium bowl, combine cream cheese and marshmallow crème; beat until smooth. Spread over cooled cake. Refrigerate 1 1/2 hours before decorating.

4. Rinse berries; pat dry with paper towels. In upper left corner, arrange blueberries in 5 inch square to make blue field of flag. Starting and ending at edges of cake, arrange 7 horizontal rows of raspberries, leaving white stripes between red stripes. Store in refrigerator.

GOD BLESS ThE uSA!

The lovely part of attending state Policy network events is the networking with fellow liberty-minded people, so imagine my surprise and delight when the ladies from all over the network remarked on how much they enjoy the Mackinac Center’s Pinterest page. They mentioned particularly our “Fourth of July Recipes” and “Freedom Matters” series of wallpapers, so we decided to share them with our IMPACT readers as well. Just head to Pinterest.com, sign up, and begin “pinning” photos you like to your online scrapboard. It’s a great way to keep tabs on the people behind your favorite institutions. – Lindsey dodge, editor

The Mackinac Center recommends employees celebrate Independence Day with “passion and vigor.” Kendra had some real competition the year her colleagues dared to rival her spirit.

For video, my favorite camera is a Nikon D800 with a 50mm f/1.8 lens.

My favorite editing software is Final Cut Pro. My favorite Web-publishing format is Vimeo.

And my favorite videos to watch usually involve popcorn and Jimmy Stewart.

I like creating websites that make it simple for visitors to find what they want — and to wander

where I’d like them to go. Simplify, simplify.

I designed the Mackinac Center for Public Policy’s first app, Headlines,

with a simple, easy-to-use interface that provided easy access to top

stories of the day. I then designed a how-to guide to illustrate the features

(see right). I called this a “handy” guide to the app. I like puns.

Tap the menu item to filter specific stories.

You can also swipe to the left or right to navigate the menu items.

My favorite photos are pics of my family. Alas, no one pays me to snap pictures of my kids, but I really like taking event, portrait, product, wildlife and nature photos, too — including business

portraits of colleagues like Michael Van Beek.

events, writing+ moreEvents

I’ve had the good fortune to be

on teams that have planned,

designed and marketed

numerous live events and

exhibitions: annual meetings,

tradeshows, anniversary galas,

luncheons, press conferences,

workshops, cocktail receptions

and more at large and small venues all over the country, from the state of Washington to Florida.

Writing

I’ve been involved in the production of hundreds of print and digital publications — reports, essays, articles, books and blogposts — written by some of the brightest minds in public policy, pedagogy, finance, fund development and other fields of research and study. Along the way I’ve learned from the best writers and editors in the business. (For better or for worse, I’ve grown quite attached to the AP Stylebook.)

My original writings on photography, email marketing and design have also been published in the newsletter of the State Policy Network — and I’m working on a book!

+ More

I graduated from a small liberal arts college (Olivet Nazarene University) near Chicagoland in 1992 with an art education degree (it seems like a lifetime ago).

Between then and now, I’ve had experience in print, video, web, mobile apps, photography, events and writing. These have included advertising, art direction, branding/identity, consulting, embroidery, marketing, packaging,

recording, screenprint, signage and teaching/training. My work with nonprofits and corporate clients has afforded me many amazing opportunities!

The insights of Edward Tufte revolutionized my design philosophy when I attended his course on presenting data and information, while Kevan Kjar’s clinic helped me to see how to tell clear and compelling stories through my work.

If you’d like to talk (or chat) with me about contracting, consulting, design, social media, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, or anything, please do.
