10 Dance Steps Toward Fascism

1. Invoke vague internal and external threats. The ill defined

and constant threat of terrorists and the interpretation of allincidents as terrorist attacks until proven otherwise. Establish

an alert system to constantly keep the public informed

regarding the “threat level” these terrorists pose.

2. Create a secret prison system where torture takes place that is

outside the rule of law and establish a military tribunal that strip

prisoners of due process. It will inevitably turn its abuse against

its own citizens, journalists, editors, opposition leaders, labor

leaders and outspoken clergy.

3. The nation-state redefines what is and what is not torture.

Use ill defined terms like enhanced interrogation and distress

positions to describe these activities. Eventually make it legal to

torture to address imminent threat. Justify torture by having

some pundit declare that it works.

4. Expand police powers and/or create paramilitary forces and

begin with subtle intimidation of civilians.

5. Create a surveillance apparatus with multiple parallel

agencies to monitor ordinary citizens, driven by a profit motive,

transforming the citizen into the enemy that needs surveillance.Subject Whistle-Blowers to ad hominem attacks and

prosecution. The government announces that leaking will not be

tolerated and whistle blowers will not be protected. Leaks will



actually occur, primarily as a means of promoting the

government’s agenda.

6. Arbitrarily detain and release citizens, infiltrate citizengroups, antiwar groups, environmentalist groups, religious

organizations and any other group that does not support the

mainstream. This breaks down the trust level with in these

groups.

7. Target key individuals in the media, academics, performers,

and the press to destroy reputations, careers etc. so that people

see that there are pressures and consequences for standing up.

8. Restrict the press and media, utilize terms like terrorist,

enemy of the people, sabotage, espionage, treason, traitor, spy

and expand the definitions of these terms in vague ways.

9. Recast criticism as espionage, dissent as treasonous and

criminalize certain speech (Espionage Act). Even hate speech

laws provide great opportunity to manipulate public opinionand limit opposition speech.

10. Subvert rule of law, restrict civil liberties especially

regarding illegal searches, property seizures and invasion of

privacy. Eventually an alarming incident will occur (possibly

manufactured) and be interpreted so as to allow the equivalent

of martial law to be imposed while allowing business activitiesto continue. Martial Law may be declared later at the

convenience of the powerful.
