Bhagiratha engaged intapas at Gokarna.Raising his hands,sitting amidst the fivefires, taking food onlyonce a month, and withcontrolled senses, hepractised severe tapasfor thousands of years.Then Bhagavan Brahmabecame pleased andarrived there with thedevas to give boon.Knowing about the wishof Bhagiratha to bringGanga to earth, Brahmatold him that Hara(Shiva) needs to beinvolved here as He isthe only one capable ofbearing the descent ofGanga, which the earthcannot endure.

Valmiki Ramayana(Bala Kanda 43): Tapasof Bhagiratha on Shivato bear Ganga: ThenBhagiratha performedtapas on Lord Shiva forone year. Shiva waspleased and toldBhagiratha that he willbear Ganga on his headduring her descent.

Descent of Ganga onthe head of Shiva andgetting locked: ThenGanga assuming a hugeform and unbearablespeed descended on theauspicious head ofShiva. Devi Gangathought that takingShankara with herstreams, she will enterthe patala. Meaning:3.1: It is indeed a strange picture to behold; At the root (i.e.base) of a Banyan Tree are seated old Disciples (i.e. agedDisciples) in front of an Young Guru,3.2: The Guru is Silent, and Silence is His exposition (of theHighest Knowledge); and that (Silence) is severing the doubts(automatically) from the minds of the Disciples.
