NEW DELHI, Oct 3: The Union Cabinet is likely to approve setting up of the anti- profiteering authority under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime tomorrow. Prime Minister Narendra Modi-headed Cabinet may also approve creation of the post of chairman and four technical members of the authority tomor- row, officials said. To keep a tab on businesses that have not passed on to con- sumers the benefit of lower tax rates under the GST regime, the GST Council had approved set- ting up of a five-member National Anti—Profiteering Authority. The authority will have a sun- set date of two years from the date on which the chairman assumes charge. The chairman and the four members of the authority have to be less than 62 years. The chairman, who would be a secretary level officer, shall be paid a monthly salary of Rs 2.25 lakh plus other allowances and benefits of similar ranking offi- cers. If a retired officer is selected as chairman, he will be paid a monthly salary of Rs 2.25 lakh reduced by the amount of pen- sion. The technical members will be paid a monthly salary of over Rs 2.05 lakh plus allowances and benefits as applicable to an additional secretary rank officer. The officers who are or have been commissioner of state tax or central tax or have held equiv- alent post under the excise, Customs or VAT laws will be eli- gible for appointment as techni- cal members in the authority. The additional director gen- eral in the Directorate General of Safeguards (DGS) will act as secretary to the anti-profiteering authority. The chairman and members of the authority will have a term of two years or until they attain the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier, and shall be eligible for reappointment. As per the structure of the anti-profiteering mechanism in the GST regime, complaints of local nature will be first sent to the State-level 'screening com- mittee' while those of national level will be marked for the 'Standing Committee'. If the complaints have merit, the respective committees would refer the cases for further inves- tigation to the Directorate General of Safeguards (DGS). The DG Safeguards would gen- erally take about three months to complete the investigation and send the report to the anti-profi- teering authority. (PTI) DAILY EXCELSIOR, JAMMU WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2017 (PAGE 17) 57 fresh cases of dengue reported Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 3: Fifty-seven fresh cases of dengue were report- ed today in Jammu region, taking the number of people affected with this vector-borne disease so far this season to 213. According to official sources, as on today a total of 1177 patients have been tested for dengue out of which 213 cases have been found positive and reports of 704 have been found negative while result of 256 samples are still awaited. "No death has been reported due to dengue so far", they added. Elaborating more, sources said that out of 213 dengue cases, maximum 189 have been reported in Jammu district followed by five in Doda district, Four each in Rajouri and Udhampur districts, three in Samba and one each has been reported from Poonch and Kishtwar districts. They further revealed that out of these 213 dengue patients, 139 were adults (87 males and 52 females) and 74 were children (46 males and 28 females). "So far dengue has not claimed any life in Jammu region and most of the patients affected with the disease have returned to their home after successful treatment in various hospitals", they added. Youth arrested with heroin Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 3: Miran Sahib police under 'Operation Sanjeevani' arrested a youth along with heroin. As per police sources, based on reliable information, a team from Miran Sahib Police Station laid a naka at Darsopur and inter- cepted a motorcycle bearing reg- istration number JK02BH-8443. During checking, police recovered one gram heroin, one insulin syringe, one cigarette lighter, one spoon and rolled cur- rency note of Rs 10 from the pos- session of the rider and arrested him. The arrested youth has been identified as Rajat Kumar, son of Satish Kumar Bhagat, a resident of Darsopur. A case under FIR Number 137/17 under Section 8/21/11 NDPS Act has been registered at Miran Sahib Police Station and investigation started to ascertain the source of the consignment.
