Two years after winning his third Masters crown in highlyemotional circumstances, Phil Mickelson returns to the sylvansurrounds of Augusta National next week as one of the favoritesfor the title. The American left-hander has always relished playing at the

iconic venue where his magical short game is a prized commod-ity and he will tee off in the opening round on April 5 buoyedby yet another successful start to a PGA Tour season.Mickelson has made a habit of flourishing on the U.S. cir-

cuit's 'West Coast Swing' and he came agonizingly close to win-ning consecutive titles in his home state of California last monthwhile displaying superb pre-Masters form.He stole the limelight from Tiger Woods as he charged to a

two-shot victory at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, thenlost out to compatriot Bill Haas in a three-way playoff for theNorthern Trust Open at Riviera the following week.

Do women really want loveor money in a relationship?Dear Miss Kitty,

I must strongly suggest, asone of thousands of otherdecent looking, kind andgood hearted males living inSanta Barbara, that Greg M.has spoken a simple truthabout finding a nice date here.He is not trying hard enough, you say, or looking in thewrong places or perhapsignoring some failings inhimself rather than the major-ity of single women in our"American Riviera."It is high time to acknowl-

edge that most women, wish-ing to think well of them-selves, will rarely admit tomoney being paramount inselecting a date or mate in thistown. A virtual tidal wave ofdecent men, of all ages, willattest to sharing Greg's expe-rience. He states he has made17 attempts to find just onedecent female who will judgethe content of his characterover the weight of his wallet.

Best listen to a lot moremen here before blamingGreg for lack of effort. Tryharder? Seventeen dates injust four months? Thatsounds like an admirable col-lege try to me! And I wouldwager, as a nice guy myself, that such a trial by fire costhim a bundle. The chivalrous(yet often foolish) old worldpractice of letting or expect-ing the guy to pick up the tabstill rules in dating. Please, give Greg a break. Usually

you show remark-able maturity andwisdom in yourwriting. Pleasethink this overwith care andcompassion andall the best with abetter consideredcolumn next time.Thomas, Santa

Barbara

Dear Thomas,I love that you wrote me

and I soundly agree withsome of your points. As youdirected, I have dissected anddigested both the lines and thein-betweens thoroughly, withcompassion and care. Afterthis exhaustive study, I stillconclude that if there are somany truly nice guys (andgirls) out there that can’t getpast a second date that theyowe it to themselves to takeanother look into the soulsearching mirror for inward iswhere the answers will be,like it or not. This is a noble effort

Thomas, and if by some mira-cle this dating conundrum canbe attacked in a different way– with the help of yourinsights - I will share theNoble peace prize with you.Well maybe not a NPP (whichused to be meaningful) butcoffee and pastry at Renaud’s,which in my book is as mean-ingful as it gets. So Boys andGirls; I stand my ground thatthere are plenty of amazing,

wallet-blind peopleout there to date anddate again and evenagain. If that is nothappening for you, avoid the blame gameand first check in withyourself to examinein-depth how you aregoing about theprocess. That doesn’tmean it’s going to beeasy (either the dating

process or the analysis ofknowing thyself) - but whatsort of worthwhile endeavoris? It starts with perception of

both the self and the relation-ship world as we think weknow it. This has everythingto do with how (and who) wehunt, how we act and how wetend to sabotage ourselves inthe process. There are a zil-lion ways that we contami-nate our innate ability to havesuccessful dates - and thosehighly questionable ways arepart of the reason so manyrelationships are ships wait-ing for an iceberg. How canthat be? How can we be soconfused and easily misguid-ed when all we are lookingfor is each other in a interest-ing connection over pasta andreasonably good Chianti? If you need a visual aid

think of the ubiquitousSmiley Face - with a Hitlermustache. That doesn’t makesense (for most people) and itnever makes sense to contin-ue to do the same thing and

expect a different outcome. That is why I maintain thatthere is something that youare doing - maybe conscious-ly, maybe not - which is pro-hibiting the manifestation of(dare I say it) a great relation-ship in your life. It’s an easy out to claim

that Santa Barbara, or anytown, is full of gold-diggingdames or sex-mad men, but itjust isn’t true. Sure there isthe odd duck here and therebut the majority of those par-ticipating in the wild west ofdating tend to need and wanta purposeful relationship, purposeful being defined assomething that is fulfilling, teaching, and loving. Beingin the unique position ofworking in a lingerie shop fit-ting bras day in and day outgives me a very unique per-spective. Women are prettyforthright when half nakedwith a stranger in a fittingroom and they tell me thesame thing that the “Mr. NiceGuys” are saying. How doyou meet a nice guy in thistown? All the guys want isyoung, sexy, etc. Fill in theblank with whatever you want- and it is still just an excuse. So how can it be that Mr.

Nice Man is never runninginto Miss Nice Woman? Isthere a conspiracy out there? This just may prove thataliens have visited our planetand are running a very amus-ing experiment at our expense

- but other than that could it just be possiblethat MNM and MNW are just making the samemistakes over and over again? So how do youget to date number 2 or 3, up the aisle or evento just holding hands on the street with nature, perception, society and perhaps even theAliens plotting against you? By changing yourperceptions about yourself, dating and rela-tionships-as hard as that is to admit and to do.Darling Thomas, Boys and Girls, perception

of the self is the only place to start. Would youdate yourself? Do you like yourself? Are youreally as self-confident, plug-and-play andcomfortable in your own skin as you appear? Most of us are works in progress. Knowingthat fact and accepting it is the beginning offinding that special someone (yourself), beforeyou find someone else, and hopefully they aredoing the same thing. A strong self accepts

and works from the premise that EVERYONEputs on a bit of a show in the early dates. It isno different from peacocks preening and infact it is a self protective device since we don’twant to show our soft underbellies to justeveryone. It wouldn’t be safe or smart; andquite frankly it’s a form of self preservationthat works. From then on-the real self cancome out and play and that’s when we can seeif a date is just a date or something more.Thomas to prove my point would you be

interested in a faux date with me? I am happi-ly married to Mr. Rocketman so it won’t be areal date (and if you try anything he will“faux” kill you) but we will pretend it is. Aspart of the exercise I will buy dinner if youagree to a very honest MK critique of your dat-ing persona. Maybe fresh eyes will help toopen yours (besides I know a lot of women -and you never know).Have a naughty day!Melanie Doctors aka Miss Kitty can be

inspired to action.”

Artist turned ActivistHe was born Tony Northern, in

Harlem, in 1941. Long before he was anactivist, Folayemi first was an artist. Hesculpted and painted. Many of hisimages depicted the plight of urban blackyouth, black Jesus and other spiritualimages. He spent decades working inNew York and in Africa, where he wasinspired to change his name to“Babatunde,” which means “father hasreturned.”In Africa he worked for the

Organization of African Unity, helpingcountries with their liberation efforts. Hemove from Africa to Los Angeles, andstarted a fashion company called “TheBronze Age,” and also began to workwith gangs. In the early 1980s he moved to Los

Angeles. Folayemi said he sat on theWatts Gang Task Force, and at one pointserved as a mediator between the Cripsand Bloods, the notorious Los Angelesgangs. It was in Africa and in Los Angeles

where Folayemi began to master his abil-ity to be a peacemaker and find commonground among groups that disagreed, even hated one another. He later movedto Santa Barbara and founded the Pro-Youth Coalition, a group aimed at stop-ping gang violence. He became the non-profit organization’s executive directorand started to emerge as Santa Barbara’srising star in activist circles. His rapid rise turned heads.Folayemi’s home on the Riviera

recalls much of his history. Plaques, awards and newspaper articles highlight-ing his achievements among the youth

decorate the walls. One of his proudest honors was from

the Santa Barbara Independent, whichdeclared him a “Local Hero” and calledhim Santa Barbara’s “Gang Czar” on thecover. He hung the honors in pictureframes on his walls. His activism earned him resolutions

from former state AssemblymemberHannah Beth-Jackson.Former Congressman Walter Capps

installed Folayemi’s name in the con-gressional record for his work among thecity’s youth. Folayemi said that honorwas his highest achievement. He also kept a coffee table book called

“Paradise by the Pacific,” which featureda chapter on Folayemi titled “A Friend tothe Kids.”

The Peopleʼs ChampionFolayemi was the kind of guy who

you couldn’t avoid. Even those who herubbed the wrong way couldn’t stopfrom giving him a hug or handshake.Folayemi, full of enthusiasm and sunnyoptimism, made people pay attention tohim. On the streets, whether on theEastside or Westside, Folayemi was wel-come.In a city that is about 40 percent

Latino, Folayemi somehow arose tobecome the voice of its people. To somekids, he served as de facto father, attend-ing court hearings with troubled youth. He encouraged young men with childrento be responsible fathers even if theyweren’t married. And he urged young people to go to,

and stay, in school. While his critics said he was more

about charm and style than substance,Folayemi maintained that the only wayto rise above hate was to develop person-al relationships with people.“He was an extraordinary man,” said

First District County Supervisor SaludCarbajal. “Babatunde was consistentlyengaged in advocating for social justiceespecially as it relates to issues of ouryouth. He was consistent. He alwaysworked really hard to bring attention tothe challenges our youth, particularly ourlower income youth, are facing.”Carbajal said Folayemi was gifted at

speaking on behalf of people who didn’thave their own voice within the powerstructure of local government.“What Babatunde did was magnify

how it is often the institutions that arefailing our children,” Carbajal said. “It’snot just the children failing themselves. He made government institutions look tothemselves and see that they are part ofthe solution.”As an activist, Folayemi worked to

reduce the number of gang members inthe community. One of his master-strokes was the creation of a teen center– a place for teens from all parts of thecommunity to come together.“Babatunde was always so soft spo-

ken,” Carbajal said. “He never got agitat-ed. I never saw him get angry. He alwaysworked in what I consider a very peace-ful, non-violent way, in the same ethos ofsomeone like Martin Luther King, Jr. Histools of change were communication. That was his hallmark. He could addressvarious people from different walks oflife on sensitive issues and get people toeffectively communicate.”

City CouncilIn 2001, Folayemi decided to take the

plunge from activist to elected official. His interest surprised many at City Hall.Although he was a proven leader in

activist circles, most political observersdoubted that his popularity on the streets

would carry over to the ballot box.But Folayemi was not concerned

about what the power brokers believed. He felt that his name in activist circleswas enough to make him a contender. Hecould win, he believed, if he knocked onenough doors and organized his grass-roots network of supporters to spread theword about his campaign. And in politics, timing is everything.

His chances were bolstered by twostrong progressives who were also run-ning, Iya Falcone and Roger Horton.Falcone, Horton and Folayemi becamean unofficial liberal ticket in that elec-tion.On election night, he shocked the

political establishment. He placed fourthin a race for three open seats – but won a

spot on the council when Marty Blumwas elected mayor. Her seat opened up,and Folayemi took the fourth slot, behindFalcone, Horton and Dr. Dan Secord. The man who couldn’t walk down the

street without greeting a friend with ahug was now a sudden star in politicalcircles.Once elected, he didn’t change his-

fiery brand of activism. He attempted tointerject it into City Hall.He pushed for the city to pay employ-

ees and contractors higher wages, calledfor more spending on affordable hous-ing, and urged the city to take a more tol-erant stance toward the homeless andpeople who live in their RVs.Former Mayor Blum said she enjoyed

working with Folayemi both inside andoutside of City Hall.Folayemi, she said, would stand side-

by-side with her at anti-war rallies and hefrequently showed up at the Veterans forPeace displays on the beach.

Inside the Council Chamber, Blumsaid he again was a man of great charac-ter.“I always knew where he was coming

from and I always knew I could count onhim,” Blum said. “He was always veryeven.”She said that when he spoke for his

causes, he knew that speaking the loud-est and the longest wasn’t always thebest way be effective.“I thought Babatunde was a very gift-

ed speaker,” Blum said. “He spoke soft-ly and it made everybody listen.”Still, Blum said that she never felt that

Folayemi fully settled into City Hall. Hewas a political street fighter, and navigat-ing bureaucracy and red tape wasn’t hisstrength.“I also felt he was a little uncomfort-

able on the council,” Blum said. “He did-n’t enjoy being in power or making the

decisions for everyone else.”About a year into his term, Folayemi started

to have troubles. One of his creditors sued himfor $7,000 for an overdue car loan. The debtsparked his critics to question whether hecould manage the city’s money if he couldn’tmanage his own finances. He weathered that storm, but then some-

thing more serious began to weaken him.He was losing weight. He started missing

meetings. The behavior was unusual for thehard-working and unflappable Folayemi.Behind the scenes, he drifted from City Hall

and stopped attending meetings. No one knewwhere he was or what was going on.He seemingly disappeared. Finally, after missing three council meetings

in 18 days, Folayemi said he was entering thehospital because of unspecified health prob-lems.

The nine-pound tumorBy the time he was admitted to Santa

Barbara Cottage Hospital, he had lost 50pounds, and had not eaten in two weeks.Folayemi learned that he had colon can-

cer—and a nine-pound tumor in his body.After a 10-hour surgery, doctors removed

the tumor. A Christian, he publicly thankedGod for his recovery and credited his survivalto his faith.Reinvigorated, he vowed to run for re-elec-

tion. But although he survived the cancer, his

political career wouldn’t experience the sameresult.

Reelection campaignIn less than two years, Folayemi found him-

self fighting off creditors in court and cancer inthe hospital. And now he was about to launcha re-election campaign. The ordeal was simply too much.He started raising money in June of 2003,

later than what is typically necessary for aNovember election. He had been out of CityHall and the civic eye for about four monthswhile recuperating. And the energy behind hiscampaign from the first election simply wasn’tthere. Many of the supporters who backed himthe first time had grown frustrated with him. They wondered why he kept his sicknesssilent, and disappeared, rather than sharing hisillness right away. And the political landscape was different. He was running against a new generation of

progressive activists, Das Williams and HeleneSchneider, and a well-known moderate, BrianBarnwell. There would be no fourth place vic-tories this time.Williams, Schneider and Barnwell far out-

raised Folayemi. Still, Folayemi felt as an incumbent that he

stood a good chance of re-election. He tried toinject some energy into his campaign duringthe last days. Volunteers projected his nameand photo on blank walls downtown. Theyhanded out fliers. But on election night, he fellshort.Once again, he placed fourth. But it wasn’t

good enough this time.Folayemi credited his fourth-place finish to

the loss of an endorsement by the SantaBarbara Independent, an endorsement he hadduring his first campaign.

NEWS

The weekly newspaper, which carries greatweight in elections, endorsed Williams,Schneider and Barnwell.Folayemi at the time believed the lost

endorsement was the difference in his cam-paign.But he accepted the loss, and vowed to con-

tinue his activism. He said he would continuehis focus on youth and social justice issues. The one thing Folayemi never lost was his

ability to touch people through his words.“Babatunde made me feel the way that a

priest or pastor should make you feel,” saidDas Williams, now an Assemblyman. “Heinspired me and he inspired a lot of SantaBarbarans to be better. He inspired us to caremore, to work harder, and be concerned aboutour fellow residents. He had a different spiritu-ality and gentility and a passion that we shouldall strive to have.”Folayemi remained active after his time on

the council. He often surprised guests at thedowntown Pascucci’s, where he served asguest host and even sold his homemade sweetpotato pie.He took a spiritual trip to the Middle East

last decade and when he returned he refocusedhis activism on reducing gang violence inSanta Barbara. In 2008, he brokered a peace treaty between

rival Eastside and Westside gang members.Gang members signed a treaty agreeing to

keep the peace. The treaty lasted only a few months, but

Folayemi proved that he was able to connectwith gang members in a way that many currentlaw enforcement and decision-makers struggleto do.And although Folayemi believed he lost

power at City Hall as the council gained moreconservatives, he began work on a “GreenStreets” training program for young people, tohelp them get environmentally friendly jobs.Last year, he told The Daily Sound that the

city’s pursuit of a gang injunction was thewrong approach. He felt that governmentneeded to do less talking at City Hall, and domore face-to-face time in the neighborhoods.“Nobody is giving these kids a chance,”

Folayemi said. “How can you do anything ifyou don’t know the community?"Blum said the community will miss him.“Babatunde was a real force,” she said. “His

voice was heard. It was a quiet voice, but itwas heard very strongly. He was a very won-derful soul who I am sure is doing just finenow. He was a kind and very peaceful man.”Folayemi is survived by his wife Akivah

Northern, his son, several nieces and nephews,as well as grandnieces and grandnephews. Heis also survived by his wife’s Aunt Bea (VivianScarbrough), who is 105 years old."We are all grieving together," said Akivah,

in a statement.Babatunde’s family will celebrate his life

with a public memorial service at a date yet tobe determined.
