INTRODUCTION

\ 4his report presents data on Department of Defense (DOD) prime contractawards over $25,000 for research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) madeto educational and nonprofit institutions during Fiscal Year (FY) 1987. These dataare presented in three tables, each of which lists contractors alphabetically andgives the net value of all awards to the contractor as well as the value of the awardsto each of the contractor's locations, where applicable. Table 1 covers awards toeducational and other nonprofit institutions in the United States and Table 2 coversawards to U.S. government agencies. Data on awards to foreign institutions andgovernment agencies are provided in Table 3.

NOTES ON COVERAGEThe dollar amounts shown here include prime contract awards over $25,000 for

RDT&E work only and only that awarded to nonprofit, educational, and governmentinstitutions. Data on awards for other services, such as training, and on any suppliesfurnished by the contractor in support of research being done, are excluded.Contract awards for civil functions are included in these data. Civil funct,,encompass planning, programming, designing, constructing, and operating Federdlwater resource projects for navigation, flood control, hydroelectric powerproduction, water supply, and other related activities.

The locations shown in the tables are those reported as where the work was tobe performed. Normally, this is a facility of the institution awarded the contract.However, if the work was scheduled to be performed at a Defense facility, such asan Air Force base, the location shown may be that of the Defense facility rather thanthe institution.

In FY 1987, educational and nonprofit institutions received DOD prime contractawards over $25,000 for RDT&E totaling $2,818 million compared to $2,712 in FY1986. This represents an increase of $106 million or 3.9 percent Awards to U.S.institutions increased from $2,659 million in FY 1986 to $2,754 million in FY 1987, anincrease of 3.6 percent and awards to U.S. government agencies decreased from$26 million in FY 1986 to $18 million in FY 1987 or -30.8%. The awards to foreigninstitutions shows an increase from $27 million to $45 million or a jump of 66.7%.

The following chart presents the percentage of dollar amounts for the varioustypes of contractors receiving RDT&E awards for FY 1987
