Capgemini is involved in Mars exploration missions
Two Mars exploration missions
Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) : operational since 2012
Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport
(INSIGHT) : currently in development, launch foreseen on March 2018

Mars Science Laboratory overview
MSL objectives
Investigating Mars’s habitability
Studying its climate and geology
Collecting data for a manned mission to Mars
International cooperation :
Nasa, JPL, Space Agencies and Laboratories

INSIGHT Overview
INSIGHT objectives
Determine the inner contents of Mars (crust, mantle, core)
Measure Mars seismic activity
Measure Mars meteorite impacts
Instruments are onboard a Lander
CNES is in charge of the main
instrument, SEIS, a seismometer.

Capgemini contribution to MSL and INSIGHT
Realization of Operation Centers of CNES instruments
FIMOC : the MSL Operation Center
SISMOC : the INSIGHT Operation Center
Common functions
acquire instrument data
apply scientific algorithms on those data
distribute the resulting product files to the involved scientific community
manage data in a dedicated catalog
monitor the instrument health
Design, Develop, Test and Maintain
Catalog for data management
Data processing
Custom applications
Integration with CNES mission center frameworks

What we learn’t
Low bandwidth for input data does not mean « easy to process »
Very low data volume to process each day : ~ 10 MB / day …
… but very high compression ratio
~ 10 millions of objects to process per day
• Time interpolation for data timestamping ;
• Complex scientific algorithms on each object
Must be carrefully handled in Python data processing code
• Memory Management
• Single object structure and denormalization
Best solution to reduce time processing is to not perform processing at all !!
• Find workaround to not apply a processsing on each objects

Wrap up
FIMOC has been operational since 2012
Maintenance ensured by Capgemini ;
Constant evolutions matured architecture
No martian has been found yet !!
… but a lot of knowledge acquired about Mars environment
SISMOC
Development is still in progress : integration of meteorit impact detection processings
Very fascinating projects
