Jessica waited a very long time to ownher first Porsche, and after muchdeliberation chose this loaded 996 fromPorsche of Wallingford. The car is a well-motivated world of fun, and theraucous sound of the flat-six iswonderfully audible in the open air oftop-down motoring. As I start this column, the snow isblowing in hard, bringing the firsttangible evidence of the winter solstice having just occurred. I beatthe weather by finishing my last pre-winter item THIS morning: I moved thetrailer so I could place boards under thetires so they wouldn’t freeze to theground, something that I learned aboutthe hard way. If this ever happens toyou, run some hot water around the tiresand eventually they’ll come free. Messy, but it works. The 911 track car is storedin there for its annual hibernation. Unfortunately, metamorphosis doesn’toccur and I won’t see a new 911 GTSin there in the spring.

Just before Christmas my PC’s harddrive quit; at least it was a mechanicalfailure and not a virus. (So, I was givena waiver from our Challenge editor,Shelley, for a delayed deadline for thiscolumn). Getting it replaced and rein-stalling the software is ongoing. Fortu-nately, I have a back up program. But, Ihave to relearn how to configure all theprograms. Bummer.

Getting to CVR stuff... We haveagreed to host the Zone 1 Concours onthe weekend of May 14th and 15th, andour good man, Lew Trusheim, with assistance from Jack Kearney, has volunteered to chair it. A few years agoLew ran the weekend for CVR, so heknows the requirements. The event willbe held in conjunction with a Rally. Allthe details should be online at cvrpca.organd in this issue. We will need volun-teers to assist on both days. Please consider helping Lew, even if you areonly available for one day. I promisethat the snow will be gone by then.

At the CVR Board Planning Meet-ing in January all the event chairs presented their schedules. When this issue of the Challenge is in your hands, most of our 2011 events should bescheduled. Check the website (often).

If you are new to CVR, or have aninterest in becoming more involved thisyear, you should attend the MembershipSampler. It will give you an excellentoverview of all the CVR activities. Thechairs will be there to give you an explanation of their areas and to answeryour questions. In the past we’ve had amini concours and autocross, so bringyour Porsche. And, there will be food.

Keep the faith, spring will comeand our great Porsche cars will all beback on the roads and tracks. In themeantime, we have Monthly Meetingswith fascinating programs at reallycool venues. Please join us. And, there is food.

AAs I write this month’s installmentof “On Track” it is 13 days beforeChristmas. I have a strong belief thatshopping for Christmas gifts is best de-scribed by an old driving saw: “I waituntil panic sets in then I back off just atouch”. Yes, indeed, I am one of thosepoor men staggering around the mallwild-eyed, horrendouslyover-caffeinated from hang-ing around Starbucks tryingto think of something to getmy wife and, ultimately, Ispend too much on thingsthat no one really likes. Inshort, I am a ripe target foreither a Brookstone Storeselling helicopters (Doesn’tevery woman want a radiocontrolled helicopter?) or akiosk person who sells mea monogrammed Snuggie! What’s wrong with a Snug-gie? If everyone had a Snug-gie just think how much ourcarbon footprint would bereduced. Oh well, I am not going tothink about that now. Scarlett said it best,“Tomorrow is another day”.

Right then, on to business. Our Winter Workshop will be SaturdayMarch 5th at our usual venue the CrownePlaza in Southbury. Registration will beon www.registration.net. For any newmembers and any drivers consideringdoing Driver Education this event is amust. We will have an exciting guestspeaker as well as break-out sessions forall driving levels. Also, Fred Staudinger

will offer the ability for our instructorsto become nationally certified via hisNational DE Certification Workshop.

The 2011 driving schedule is com-ing along nicely. We have secured ourdates with Watkins Glen and are in thefinal stages of doing the same at LimeRock. 2011 will look much like 2010

with the deletion of Monti-cello Motor Club. I havebeen in touch with MMCand for the 2011 season theyare not renting to car clubs.I know I said this last month, but, I think it bears repeating. We will stay in touch withMMC in the hopes that cir-cumstances change in the fu-ture.

For those of you whohave not done any DriversEducation I want to reiteratehow important the WinterWorkshop is. It will give youa great opportunity to meetother new drivers and really

get a feel for what a day at the track en-tails. We will go over getting your carteched, the structure of day, how our in-struction process works and what youcan learn doing Drivers Education. Onequestion that always comes up regardingDE is: Will doing DE in any way hurtmy car? As a new driver I can assureyou, that you will not be pushing the carto anything approaching “the limit” andtherefore it is highly unlikely that youwould do anything to damage your car

>>>continued on page 20

in any way. Porsches are extremely robust, well-built cars that are made precisely to be driven in a manner thatis impossible to experience anywherebut on a race track. That is why we say,“come drive your car the way it wasmeant to be driven”. DE is the place to

really enjoy what your Porsche has to offer.

Autocross is a low speed form of motorsport that emphasizes low-costcompetition and active participation in a non-threatening and safeenvironment. Drivers will find themselves testing their skill and limits oftheir cars under this timed competition where drivers navigate throughcourses marked by traffic cones rather than tracks; making car handlingand driver skill the most important priority of this challenge.

Check cvrpca.org on theAutocross page for our firstevent of 2011. While you are there, play a few of theYouTube videos from lastseason to remember what an adrenaline rush it is!

TThis is a key month for both CVRmembers and Board Members alike. Not just because it is the start of thenew year, but it is also when our annualCVR Planning Meeting takes place, thisis where strategies and plans for the up-coming season are mapped out. Eventsthat we have firm details on are coveredin this issue, and next months issue willdetail a number of events that you won’twant to miss—so stay tuned.

First, we’d like to welcome two newBoard members, Jon Fairbanks is backin his former role as Vice President ofDrivers Education, the plans he described for this season sound quiteexciting, (I found myself cruising theweb last night looking for a new hel-met) and Jason Pueschel has signed onas Program Assistant to help fill in forMike Odeirna who is taking a “pit stop”from his position this year, I hope heenjoys his opportunity with Programsas much as I do with Challenge.

Following are a few items that I’dlike to remind you of this month, oneof the most important is the link between Challenge and the CVR PCAwebsite and why you should alwayscheck it for the most up-to-date infor-mation. A perfect case-in-point is the

cancellation of our monthly meeting atthe Black Horse Garage last week. With all the snow in the past few weeksand the forecast of more to come onTuesday, our Program VPs felt thatcanceling was the prudent thing to do,a shame, but plans are at hand to visitBlack Horse in the near future. If youdid not check the website for lastminute details, you might have drivena long way for nothing.

One other thing I’d like to remindyou of is the CVR affiliation with TireRack, this is of great benefit to younot only for the discounted pricing, butthe additional commission income forCVR will benefit us with funding tohelp cover the cost of services providedto our members. With all of the snowwe’ve had lately it might be a verygood time to think about putting onsome nice new snow tires.

Lastly, Susan Young gave us a bitof important news for those of you whoare planning on coming to Lime Rockthis season. The historic White HartInn (Salisbury, CT), has abruptly closedit’s doors, unfortunate, as it dramati-cally reduces the room count near thetrack. If you are planning on attendingany events we suggest that you bookrooms elsewhere as soon as possible, unless you happen to have $5 milliondollars laying around (the asking price),make them an offer, you are almostsure to have a number of friendly PCAmembers knocking at your door.Looking forward to hearing from you.

Events that we have firmdetails on are covered in thisissue, and next months issuewill detail a number of eventsthat you won’t want to miss—

so stay tuned.

We are returning to Cranbury Park this year to accommodate the growing number of members who participate each year.

This year will feature 2 very special displays:

One recognizing the 60th Anniversary of Porsche in America

A “Winner’s Circle”Past winners of the CVR Concours selected by the

Concours Committee

We will also be adding a new class for “My other car” which will be open to any non-Porsche. It will be People’s Choice judged like all the other classes.

So watch for further details in Challenge and on the CVR website.

Have you thought aboutentering your car in aConcours? That is greatnews and I want to giveyou a few hints on how toprepare for entering yourfirst Concours.

In Northern andSouthern California, thetwo PCA Zones run a series for Concours competition. I am not surehow other parts of thecountry run their Concours. However what I am going to talk about ispretty universal as far asprepping your car for thefirst time. I am going togive you the simple ap-proach to get you started.

After you have preppedyour car and entered itfor the first time, you’llwant to know more aboutwhat product we recom-mend, this can be a longlist as products changeand just about everyonehas an opinion.

First look at the carclassifications that are offered for the event youare interested in entering.I would choose the entrylevel class, like Wash &Shine. In Wash & Shine, only the exterior and interior are judged. It iseasier than having to

clean the trunk and en-gine as well, this could bea bit overwhelming if youare just getting started.

For the exterior, washthe car thoroughly. Thisincludes the wheels, bumpers, paint, windows, headlights, tires, fog lights& valance. Make sure youdo not leave any waterspots. To reduce waterspotting, use distilled water for washing andrinsing, if you do not havedistilled water around;make sure you wash the

car in segments. This wayyou can dry it off quicklyto reduce spotting.

You also want to polish the car. If yourPorsche sits out all thetime, then you will wantto wax it, if not – a goodpolish will make your carsparkle. Make sure youget the entire wax/polishresidue off the paint, rubber and crevices. You can use a soft bristled

brush or tooth brush toremove the excess wax orpolish stuck on the rubberor crevice. It will breakloose and create a finedust. Don’t wipe this stuffdown with a rag; it willjust move it somewhereelse. You are better off using a very soft bristledbrush or air to whisk thedust away.

On your wheels, makesure they are cleaned andpolished. Clean off thesidewalls, using SimpleGreen or some other

cleaner to remove any excess tire dressing orgrime. Use a soft bristledbrush to scrub the tireswith cleaner. You will wantto be able to rub your fingers across the sidewalls without yourfingers turning black orbrown. On the wheelsthemselves, polish them, clean around the lug nuts,as this is an area judgesparticularly love to check.

Then make sure you don’thave any excess polishalong the rim or lug nutarea. Don’t put a dressingon the wheels, this stuffjust picks up more dirtfrom the road. You don’thave to clean the wheelwells for a Concours, butit is a good idea to do so,as it makes the overallpresentation of the carlook better.

Now that you aredone with the exterior, itlooks pretty darn goodhuh? Take a few photos,

it is fun to chronicle yourefforts and share themwith your friends.

The next area to cleanfor a Wash & Shine Classis the Interior. You are going to clean just abouteverything that is visibleand then some. I will tryto point you through thebasics to get you throughyour first Concours, butthis area does require attention to detail. First

clean the windows, whyfirst, well you will have toclimb in the car to cleanthem. When you do thisyou also bring in with youdirt and debris from theoutside or your shoes. I’ll be honest, I hatecleaning the windows, finding a good streak freecleaner is a lot of trial anderror. I have found that asolution of Distilled waterand rubbing alcoholworks best with a microfiber towel. >>>continued on page 38

Now that the windowsare done, the next toclean is the upholstery. Ifyou have leather seats, get a good leather cleanerand conditioner. I haveused a few of them, butrecently have been usingConnoly’s Hide Care. Theimportant thing withLeather interior is to keepthe leather conditioned,so it does not dry out andcrack. If your upholsteryhas seams, make sureyou clean these as well.Dirt and dust collects inthe crevices. Use a softbristled brush or tooth-brush to clean these out.Clean the seat belt handles, if these arechrome, chrome cleaners

like Wenol or Mothers will polish them up. Next areais the dash, instruments, glove box and steeringcolumn. Make sure theseare all clean of dust anddirt. If the dash is leather,it is important to conditionthis as well. Make sureyou clean the vents anddefroster vents. Take anold soft cotton sock anduse it like a glove, itworks great to pick uploose dust and dirt. Spraya bit of water on the gloveto make it slightly damp, and it will pick up thedust and dirt without depositing it somewhereelse in the interior. Onearea many people forgetabout cleaning is under

the dash – I know you aresaying WHAT, under thedash. But think about it, it gets just as dirty anddusty under there as anywhere else on the car.The stuff over time canbuild up and is just yucky. It also can get on the carpet or affect those withallergies if not removed.Use the sock method Imentioned before and itwill clean it up – judgeslove to look in this area.Another favorite spot forthe judges (mine too) isthe door latches, theseget really dirty over time, you can clean these withWD40 and they turn outgreat. I do not lubricatemine except with WD40,

Photo Tim Rogers

Page 41: CVR Challenge February 2011

39February 2011C H A L L E N G E

but if you want to lubri-cate the latches, makesure the lubricant isclean. When this lubricantgets dirty it becomesabrasive. Don’t forget toclean the console or doorpockets, if you have them, they should be dust/dirtfree and empty when youshow the car.

Now we move ontothe carpets and flooring.First, a good vacuuming is required. This includesalong the edges of thecarpet, under the mats if removable, etc. Use acrevice tool to get thosenarrow or hard to reachareas. If your carpet isspotted with dirt, youshould shampoo this outif possible. Don’t get thecarpet too wet whenshampooing and allow itto dry before the show.

The day of the show, bring sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, beverages, chair and a mat. You willalso want to bring some

of your cleaning suppliesand tools to do touch upwork once you are at

the show.These are the basics;

we can go into a lot moredetail on how to prep anautomobile for a Con-cours. If you take your carto a detailer first, you will

still want to go throughsome of the steps above.

I have been showingmy 1970 911E for the last15 years +. My car hadbeen raced, toured andrallied for years, so I knowhow tough it can seem toget started. But I have enjoyed seeing how thecar has improved over the years and it is anaward-winning automo-bile. Once you get itclean, it is not that difficult to keep it clean.

Here is little checklistfor both the exterior andinterior to get you started – Good Luck

of operations. If you choose to use Rt. 7to get to the Williams Inn you will passMount Greylock. Mount Greylock is thehighest point in Massachusetts at 3,491feet. The mountain has been an inspira-tion to many writers including HermanMelville. Melville, who farmed 160acres in Pittsfield, Ma., always admiredthe view of the mountain from his backporch. The view reminded him of hispast whaling days. The great mountain

was the hump of a whale and the lowerhills were the breaking waves as thewhale plunged back into the water.“There she blows!—there she blows! A hump like a snow hill! It is MobyDick!” For those who are arriving earlythere are many cultural and fun activities.Located nearby are the MassachusettsMuseum of Modern Art in North Adams,MA and the Manchester Designer Out-lets in Manchester, VT.

All of the foregoingmay be just “folksy news”after completing a seriesof driver’s education days,a time trial or a season of Arizona Regionautocrosses and we findourselves wishing formore top speed down astraight or faster acceler-ation out of a corner. All non-turbochargedPorsche engines from theModel Year 1984 and on

are equipped with anelectronic engine man-agement system calledDigital Motor Electronics(DME). The heart of theDME system is a digitalmicroprocessor (chip) thatcontrols the fuel flow tothe injectors as well ascontrolling the ignitionspark timing.

A reliable bolt-on increase of 12 to 15horsepower can be

obtained from a goodStage 1 chip that is programmed to be com-patible with the fuel octane level availablehere in Arizona and leavesthe rev limiter cutoff unchanged. Autothority, Fabspeed Motorsport and Weltmeister are recognized suppliers ofreplacement DME chips.Performance gains frombolt-on aftermarket

Our normally-aspirated Porsches (read non-Turbos) leave the factory inStuttgart with engines that are leaders in the automotive industry in terms ofspecific power output-horsepower per liter. The Boxster and Boxster S enginesare rated at 88 hp/l and 91 hp/l, respectively, and the 997 engine is rated at 90 hp/l. In comparison, the 2011 Corvette engine outputs range from 69 hp/l to 102 hp/l. Runof the mill BMW, Jaguar, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz engine outputs are in the 65 to 75hp/l range. The Ferrari 458, known for its “off the scale” performance, has an enginethat is rated at 127 hp/l, comparable to the 997 Turbo. High specific power output engines are not a new Porsche feature, the 1969 911S engine was rated at 85 hp/l,forty-one years ago, producing 170 hp from its 2.0 liter displacement engine.

Page 47: CVR Challenge February 2011

45February 2011C H A L L E N G E

exhaust systems are min-imal at best. They soundwonderful, even soundmore powerful, but atmost 5 additional horse-power is the very best onecan expect when thestock engine rpm rangeand the stock camshaftprofile is maintained. Keepin mind that 5 horsepoweris within the power varia-tions that exist from thetemperature from a hotday to a cold day.

Porsche really does avery good job of providingsufficient muffler flow ca-pacity with their OriginalEquipment exhaust systems, they are just tooquiet for some folks. Onthe air intake/filter side ofthe engine, Porsche’s design and OEM partsprovide intake air flowthat is non-turbulent andproperly metered for gooddrivability. Again, bolt-onmodifications in the wayof air boxes and specialfilters result in a moresporting sound but little if any power increase. The addition of five or six1 inch to 11⁄2 inch diame-

ter holes in your OEMplastic air box outer coverwill enhance airflow a lit-tle while certainly makinga nicer sound at wideopen throttle. Expect nomore than 5 horsepowerfrom the addition of theseextra air inlet holes. Thesum of the above parts isbetween 20 and 25horsepower at the topend which will providesome noticeable gains intop speed from your basicstock engine—not bad.The on-board Mass AirFlow Sensor and the oxygen sensors in the exhaust will make thecorrections necessary tohandle these subtlepower gains. Still not satisfied? Read on, butbring your checkbook.

Larger bolt-on enginepower increases, thirty ormore horsepower, can beachieved through a com-patible combination of a“mapped” DME chip upgrade, a high flow airintake system and a highperformance exhaust

system. A chip may be“mapped” (read programmed) to accountfor changes in compres-sion ratios, camshaft profiles, air mass flows, exhaust headers, andother modifications. Therev limiter cutoff valueand fuel/air ratio in thecylinders can be alteredand controlled as well.Pay particular attention tothe words “compatiblecombination” when think-ing about chips, air boxesand exhaust systems. Remember, a mappedchip upgrade that pro-vides a marked increasein the fuel flow rate to theinjectors will not increasethe engine’s power outputwithout a matching increase in the amount ofair flowing into the cylin-ders from the intake system to maintain themapped fuel/air mixtureratio. A higher perform-ance exhaust system isalso required to collectand handle the increasedflow of exhaust gases exiting the cylinders. Inother words, the total performance goal is sortof like sitting on a threelegged stool where allthree legs must be >>>continued on page 46

Page 48: CVR Challenge February 2011

46 February 2011 C H A L L E N G E

present andcompatible witheach other for a goodbalanced result.

To take advantage ofthe higher potential gainsfrom a Stage 2 or Stage 3mapped chip, some inter-nal engine parts will needupgrades to operate atthe higher engine revswhere the additionalpower is made and theperformance is felt. The3.2 liter and 3.6 liter 911engines from 1984through 1998 all needhigher strength connect-ing rod bolts, and, higherstrength valve springsand retainers to operateabove 7000 rpm for prolonged periods. Thesemodifications may stretchthe term “bolt-on” some-what past the limit, butthe experiences of thosegoing down this road before us have proventhem to be wise and necessary investments. A higher performance

camshaft upgradeshould be consid-ered as well when

the valve spring and re-tainer changes are made. The high flow intake system that matches upwith the Stage 2 or Stage3 mapped performancechips can be either an internal velocity cone typelike a PowerFlow unit or aperformance air box typelike a Weltmeister or evenyour drilled out OriginalEquipment air box. A K&Nair filter's higher flow capacity would be com-patible with these air box setups. The matching highperformance exhaust system should consist of a header system for collection and flowing ofcylinder gases to a muf-fler/exhaust pipe system.A local area manufacturerand Going Places adver-tiser, B&B Fabrication, is awell known high perform-ance exhaust system

provider. A properlymatched Stage 2 or Stage3 setup will provide a realand measurable perform-ance increment from the additional raw power output plus the higher revcapacity available.

We have now estab-lished both ends of the“bolt-on” upgrade performance spectrum. The 20-25 horsepowerupgrade can be createdunder your engine lid forseveral hundred dollars. AStage 3 or higher upgradewhich may boost powerby 35-45 horsepower willset you back several thou-sand dollars including theinternal engine upgradesrequired for sustainedhigher rpm operation. Youpick your horsepower andpay the price so to speak. It is worthy to note herethat the first 20 horsescome fairly cheaply andeasily but the next 20horses come at a muchhigher price due to thecomplexity and the relatedupgrades needed. Besidesthe engine, there are otherareas of your Porschewhere bolt-on perform-ance upgrades will improve your lap times orrun times—suspension>>>continued on page 49

and brakes. Upgradingthese components as theengine power is increasedwill keep the car in overallbalance. Again, the threelegged stool analogy—ifyou add more go power, you should add more han-dling control and stoppingpower to keep the totalperformance of your car in balance.

Consider a set of performance springs ortorsion bars plus a set ofperformance struts and/or

shocks along with the addition of a front struttower brace to keep thesuspension members intouch with Mother Earth inall competitive situations.Brake caliper, brake padand brake rotor upgradescan be added much likethe stages of the mappedDME chips to keep yourPorsche's stopping powermatched to the go powerselected. Our Porschesare one of a very few automobiles in the world

that can be tuned and improved stage by stagewith OEM quality bolt-onperformance upgrades. There is a vast array ofchoices, options and prod-ucts out there that haveproven track records, nopun intended. Each ownercan create his or her ownunique performance nichewith bolt-on upgrades depending upon theheight of their expecta-tions and the depth oftheir pockets. Enjoy.
