The World's Most Rugged and BestSealed Photoelectric Sensor

Product DescriptionE58 Harsh Duty Photoelectric Sensorswere designed to withstand yourharshest physical, chemical and opti-cal environments.

Extensive research dictated the choiceof materials used in this sensor.Stainless steel, PVDF and temperedglass components are mechanicallyassembled using Viton® seals toensure complete sealing and resis-tance to industry chemicals. We haveeliminated adhesives and pottingwhich may be subject to failure fromchemical attack. The sensors are alsodesigned to withstand heavy shockand vibration.

E58 Harsh Duty sensors feature unpar-alleled optical performance. They areideal for automotive applicationswhere exposure to lubricants, cuttingfluids, coolants and glycols are com-mon. For food processing applica-tions, a smooth body versionsimplifies high-pressure chemicalwashdowns, and withstands theuse of sanitizers, surfactants, andcleaning agents including dilutedbases and acids.

Application DescriptionE58 Harsh Duty Physical AttributesRugged Physical ConstructionE58 sensors were designed from theground up to be the most ruggedavailable. The strong metal housingwith mechanical seals and surfacemount electronics withstands heavyshock and vibration. The temperedglass lens cover provides protection inabrasive environments, and the sturdycable is physically clamped to the sen-sor body.

Exceptional environmental protection andchemical compatibilityThe E58 harsh duty family wasdesigned to be used in the Automo-tive, Food Processing and Forestproducts industries. It is also wellsuited for applications in related indus-tries such as Pulp and Paper, Car Washand Steel. These industries are allphysically demanding on equipmentand that's why we designed and testedthese sensors to extreme levels ofshock and vibration.

However, many sensor failures areactually due to chemical attack. So wehad to make them stand up to constantchemical exposure — day in and dayout. To ensure compatibility across thewidest range of chemicals, we con-ducted extensive studies of the chemi-cal agents commonly used in theseindustries. Then we selected onlythose materials that could withstandexposure to these chemicals withoutfailure. In addition, we eliminatedadhesives in favor of more reliableViton compression seals. Some of themore common chemicals are listed inthe compatibility chart.

These studies were done with thestandard sensor model in mind whichhas a 303 stainless steel body. Addi-tional chemical resistance for foodindustry applications is available usingsensors with the optional 316 stainlesssteel body and hard-coated polycar-bonate (or acrylic on reflex models)lens cover.

It is important to note that chemicalresistance is strongly influenced bymany factors. The E58 sensor wasdesigned to resist these chemicalsunder normal use and conditions.Extremes of environmental factors, such as temperature, pressure, concentration, duration of exposure, ultraviolet sunlight and chemicalinteractions could result in prematurematerial failure.

For these cases, it is recommendedthat you test the sensor in the specificapplication.

OperationSensing ModesPerfect Prox®This is a unique type of diffuse reflec-tive sensor that combines extremelyhigh sensing power (called excessgain) with a sharp optical cutoff toignore backgrounds. This allows thesensor to reliably detect targetsregardless of variations in color, reflec-tance, contrast or surface shape, whileignoring objects that are just slightlyoutside of the target range. With Per-fect Prox®, the E58 can act just like aninductive prox sensor — but with up to20 times more range for mountingaway from a moving target to avoiddamage and downtime. 18 mm or30 mm size, 2-, 3- or 4-wire circuit, andcable, micro or mini connector termi-nations, mean quick and easy replace-ment of damaged proximity sensors. Avisible sensing beam lets you quicklyconfirm that the sensor is aligned cor-rectly with the target.

The 18 mm Perfect Prox has asensing range of 2 or 4 inches(50 or 100 mm), and the 30 mmhas a range of 6 or 11 inches(150 or 280 mm).

This simplified application shows thepower of the Perfect Prox®.

Figure 53-25. Perfect Prox®

If the hole is present in the gear, thesensor will shine through the hole andignore the belt — no detection eventwill occur.

If the hole in the gear is missing, thesensor will detect the surface of thegear and reject the part.

Thru-BeamThis sensing mode is available in the30 mm models. Rated sensing range is800 feet (244m), among the longestranges available. This providesextremely high excess gain when thesource and detector are positioned atcloser, optimum ranges to see throughhigh levels of contamination. A visiblered sensing beam and wide field-of-view mean quick and easy installationand alignment.

Polarized ReflexAnother sensing mode available in the30 mm models is polarized reflex. Withthis mode, the sensing beam isreflected from a retroreflector back tothe sensor. The maximum range is34 feet (10m) which is also among thelongest available. The polarizing filterbuilt into the sensor ensures that onlylight reflected off a corner cuberetroreflector is recognized by thesensor. This allows reliable detectionof shiny targets that could reflect lightback to the sensor and be missed by anon-polarized sensor. This alsofeatures a visible sensing beam foreasy installation and alignment.
