Kitchen Designs By Fred opened for business in Kennewick, WA, in November of 2016. Owned by Fred Higgins, and specializing in kitchen and bathroom design, Fred has the skills and experience to take his clients’ concepts and ideas and turn them into a design that works for their budget.

Fred began his woodworking career in the 70s, and has developed a reputation over the years as a “wood artist” for his carpentry and designs. Prior to his move to Washington State, he headed up the cabinet shop for Coaster Construction in Cannon Beach, OR, where he became an exclusive dealer for Canyon Creek Cabinet Company.

Fred and his wife Wendy moved to the Tri-Cities area of Washington State last year so that Wendy could take the position as GM of The Lodge at Columbia Point in Richland, WA. The beautiful, expansive Lodge opened last July, and Fred designed all the Canyon Creek cabinet installations.

Throughout his career, Fred has designed and managed many projects working with designers, remodeling contractors, and new home builders. His attention to detail and understanding of home design concepts help to create functional and attractive designs tailored for each project.

Fred prides himself in his professional and honest approach and his eye for design as well as his ability to create and execute functional interior spaces. He has already established relationships with a new group of designers, builders and homeowners in the Tri-Cities area.

AkzoNobel Showcases 2018 Color and Styling Trends

At the event, trends for furniture, cab-inetry, flooring and building products were presented to a select group of manufacturers, designers and product developers across the wood indus-tries. During the presentation, Heart Wood was launched as the 2018 AkzoNobel Color of the Year (featured in above image).

Robert Haley, Color Trends Manager for AkzoNobel’s Wood Coatings busi-ness, presented the color and design influences driving the industry in the next year. He explained how specific styles within the wood market are moving into 2018.

In his talk, Haley identified the im-portance of the open home design concept that is dominating new home construction and home renovations. “Open spaces provide opportunity for a flow of styles between areas within the home due to the absence of dis-tinct rooms. This flow impacts design elements including building products,

flooring, cabinetry and furniture selections. It also provides infinite combinations in design, creating distinct and individual living spaces,” said Haley.

In his presentation, Haley identified four wood finishing trends for 2018 that transcend design:

Historically Modern – Dominate wood tones, mixing contemporary looks with historically relevant pieces

Reclamation – Products that are weathered, raw and organic that show the imperfections in wood

Pearl & Metallic – A mix of modern and transitional that sparkle with a contemporary shimmer

Opaque – The style dominating cot-tage and lodge design, with two-tone looks that can also be used to create a dramatic contemporary style

AkzoNobel, experts on wood coatings design, presented the latest findings on color and styling trends at the Fall 2017 High Point International Home Furnishings Market. Below is an article from AkzoNobel on announcing their color and style trends for the upcoming year.

AkzoNobel Color and Styling Trends (continued)“These trends influence many designs,” says Haley. “Our job is to help our customers translate these trends into interesting colors, unique techniques and wood finishing processes in support of their business objectives. Sharing how the company’s Color of the Year, Heart Wood, can be expressed on different wood substrates and used in a measured tonal value provides product designers an on-trend and broader palette to consider.”

Haley’s presentation was delivered at a client apprecia-tion gathering hosted by AkzoNobel at the Market event, with nearly 200 industry leaders from around the world in attendance. Customers engaged with studio artisans to review the finishing trends and see different species of wood panels displayed in novel and unique ways. The exhibit was completed with a vignette interpreting the 2018 Color of the Year in furniture, cabinetry, flooring and building products to provide inspiration for guests.

Wood Donations Turned Into Toys For CharityFor the last two years, Canyon Creek Cabinet Company has donated assorted hardwood and plywood cut-offs to Emerald Heights Retirement Community’s “Wooden Toys for Charity” group located in Redmond, WA. There are about 12 residents in the group who meet every Monday in their community workshop that is open 24/7 to the residents.

The wood pieces donated by Canyon Creek have been turned into 800+ handcrafted wooden cars, airplanes, animals, doll houses and cribs, blocks and other pull toys by the community’s residents and will then be donated to local charities and shelters.

According to John Earl, environmental manager at Canyon Creek: “It’s remarkable to see what the men and women that are part of “Wooden Toys For Charity” create every year. They are a talented group and we’ve been happy to donate wood to them over the past two years.”

Our blog is full of design tips for kitchens, baths

and other rooms. You’ll also find

Prepare For Winter! Quick Tips and Hints

Organize Your Winter WardrobeHallway closets and coat racks start to overflow with winter items. Here are four tips to keep you better organized.

First, take everything out of your entryway closet. Sort through items and see what you can toss or donate. Relocate items that

can go in other areas of the home and add storage bins to help keep track of gloves and hats.

After you sort through your winter items, create an emergency winter car kit with extra gloves, blankets, scarves and other clothing items you might need.

A tray or boot rack by the door will pre-vent slush and dirt from being tracked through the home.

An extra set of hooks, an armoire or coat rack might be the best addition if your hallway closet doesn’t give you enough winter storage options.

Bring Winter Into Your HomeWith winter just around the corner, there is no time like the present to start decorating your home the frosty beauty of this season.

Wall decals - change the look of your home this season with wintry branch decals on the fireplace or snowflake decals in the kids’ rooms. The best part about wall decals is that they can be easily removed when spring comes around.

Winter wreath - whether hung above a mantel or on your front door, festive wreaths are perfect for ringing in the new season. When filled with evergreen boughs, your wreath will not only look beautiful, but it will smell wonderful.

Swap out your tablecloth - create a warm ambiance by using a light blanket or cozy looking tablecloth in a white color palette. A subtle winter scene along the tablecloth edge or accents of silver will bring a hint of winter into the space.

» Tile and hardwood floors can get pretty chilly during the winter. Lay down a rug or two in front of the sink or beside the island.

» Start baking! The oven will generate heat that can warm up the entire room. Not only will you warm up, but you will have a tasty snack and the house will smell amazing.

» If you are updating your entire kitchen floor, consider installing heated floors.
