FINAL YEAR PROJECTS

NORTHERN LIGHTmemorial to societies forgotten

NORTHERN LIGHT is a site of two halves. One half provides sensitive funerals for those who would otherwise have required a “paupers funeral” having been encountered by local authorities under Section 46 of the “Public Health (Control of Diseases) Act 1984”. It focuses on restoring dignity through process and ritual; reinventing societies perception of funerary processes and protocols. The second half provides a memorial to finally celebrate the lives of those forgotten by society and inspire those who visit to reconsider ways in which they can live a better life and include those at the periphery of society as an acknowledgement of the deceased and the life they had lead.

A lighthouse built 150 years ago is used as the basis of the site, chosen as a symbol of enlightenment and guidance but also for its exposure, a national trust nature reserve and an important habitat for sea birds. It is rural and elemental with a strong relationship with sea, the land and the sky; a place for people to come and experience a stronger and humbling relationship with the earth whether living or deceased.

CITY VARIETIESnew gap site entrance for historic music hall

With its beginnings as a travellers inn with a simple singing room, this project asked for a new entrance into what is now a well known music hall showing big names from the comedy and theatre worlds. This would provide a prominent street presence following its recent restoration. Informing the design was the vibrant and important ‘working class heritage that is variety performance. A rich pallet of cheap materials explored the honesty of this working class tradition and shows the workings behind theatre as an expression of this. The design was viewed as a fly tower with different scenic elements hovering in the space, a performance within itself. As the visitor would enter they are taken from the mundanety of day to day life, down into another world as they are lead back stage to revel in the escapism theatre.
