    TheCurrentLoverisanadaptationoftheElectroHarmonixElectricMistressflangerfor9voperationandavarietyofBBDchips. Itoffersverywarmandrichflangingwhilemaintaininglownoiseoperationandflexibilityinitscontrols.AdditionstothevintageMistressdesignareincluded.TheseareabufferedclocksignaltotheBBD,anFXloopforthroughzeroflangingandanoutputgainstagetomatchorexceedthebypassvolume.

    MuchofthedevelopmentoftheCurrentLoverwasbasedontheworkbypresentedbyThomeequeonDIYstompboxesandthereforemuchgratitudeisowedtohimformakingitavailable.Thankyou!WhilethereisnosinglesidedartworkavailablefortheCurrentLover,ifyouwishtoetchyourownElectricMistressboard,pleasecheckouthisthreadsonDIYSB.

    Controls

    RateControlsthespeedoftheLFOwhichdrivestheflangereffect.RangeControlstheoveralldepthoftheflangingeffect.FeedbackThisistheamountdelaylinesignalsentbacktotheinputoftheBBD.Higherlevelsoffeedbackincreasethecomplexityoftheflangedsignalandcanyieldsomeintense,airplaneflanging.VolumeThisistheoutputvolumeoftheaddedgainstageattheendoftheeffect.Itallowsyoutomatchorexceedthebypasssignal.FilterThisDPDTswitchdisconnectstheLFOforamildtomoderateringmodulatoreffect.ThiseffectcanbeinfluencedwiththeRangeandFeedbackcontrols.

    Notes

    TherearethreepossibleBBDchoicesinbuildingtheCurrentLover.ThesearetheMN3007,theMN3207andthev3207.TheMN3007isstillavailablealthoughitisfairlyexpensive($8$12forasinglechip).Forthisreason,theCurrentLoverwasdesignedforalternativeBBDswhicharemorereadilyavailableandlessexpensive.TheMN3207issimilartotheMN3007buthaslowercurrentconsumptionanddifferentsupplyvoltagerequirements.Thev3207isapinforpincloneoftheMN3207andismanufacturedbyCoolaudio.PrototypeswerebuiltusingtheMN3007andMN3207.Whilethev3207wasnottesteditshouldworkfollowingthesamebuildingprocedureoutlinedbelowfortheMN3207.ThevideodemolinkedbelowwasbuiltusingtheMN3207fromsmallbear,whichwasabout$5.

    BewaryofpurchasingMN3007chipsonline.TherearesomeoverseasellersoneBayofferingfakeorcounterfeitchips.ItisbesttopurchasetheMN3007orMN3207fromareliablesourcelikesmallbear,orotherDIYers,ifpossible.

    TheCurrentLoverallowsyoutousePCBmounted16mmpotsandDPDTswitchforaneasierbuild.ThepadsfortheDPDTaresizedforlugsinsteadofpinssincetheyareverycommon.

    Thereareseverallabeledgroundconnections(GND)ontheboard.Youdonotneedtouseallofthem:theyarethereforconvenience.

    TwoSND/RTNpadsareincludedifyouwishtoexperimentwithathroughzerotypeflangingeffect.Ifyoudonotwishtousethisfeature,youwillneedtojumperthetwopadstogetherforcorrectoperation.Notethatthisdocumentdoesnotincludeanyinformationongeneratingthroughzeroeffectsasthatwasnotpartofthedevelopmentprocess.Itisofferedforthosewhowishtoexperiment.YoucanfindsomeinfoaboutTZwiththeElectricMistressonDIYSB.

    JumpersThereareafewstepstotakedependingonwhetheryouarebuildingtheMN3007orMN3207version(assumethatthev3207isthesameasMN3207).Thepowerandgroundpinsonthesetwochipsaretheoppositeofoneanother,whichalsoinfluenceshowsomeadditionalcomponentsconnecttotheBBDs.Toallowforthedifferentchips,twojumpersarelocatedonthePCBtosetwhichpinsgetthepowerandwhichpinsgetground.

    ConnectthehighlightedjumpersasshownbelowforyourBBDversion.

    PowerTheMN3007andMN3207haveslightlydifferentpowerrequirements.TheMN3007canoperateforupto15vDC.TheMN3207supplyvoltageneedstobeclampedataround8v.

    MN3007OmitD4,D5andC5.ConnectthesquareandroundpinsofC5togetherviaajumper.Thisdoestwothings:connectspin1oftheMN3007toVCviaa100Rseriesresistorfor(nearly) fullvoltageoperationandconnectstheVGGpinofthechiptoground.NotethatwhiletheCurrentLoverisintendedfor9voperation,youcansafelyoperateitupto15vDCprovideditiswellregulated.Ifyouchangetoalargersupplyafterbiasingitfor9v,youwillmostlikelyhavetorebiastheeffectforthelargersupplyvoltage.

    MN3207ConnectD5,andC5asperthelayoutdiagram.Thislimitsthesupplyvoltageto8.2v.D4shouldlimitthe8.2vBBDsupplytoabout14/15forconnectingtotheVGGpin.However,thereisasmallerrorhereinthatD4isactuallyconnectingfromVContheboardandnotthe8.2v(VDD)supply.Howeverthisisaveryeasyfix.Simplyconnectthebottomlead(anode)ofD4totheC6/D5junction.Thiscanbedoneonthebottomsideoftheboardtokeepthingslookingclean.ThisisthesolutionIrecommend.Oncetheboardispowered,youshouldhavebetween7.6and7.7vDConpin4ofIC2.

  • Biasing

    ThefinalstepaftersolderingallthecomponentsandjumpersistoproperlybiastheoperationoftheclockandBBD.Thisisactuallyveryeasyandcanbedonebyear.

    Beforepoweringuptheboardandconnectingyourguitarandamp,settheClockandBiastrimmerstotheirmiddleposition.SettheT1trimmerandRatepotfullycounterclockwise.Finally,settheRange,VolumeandFeedbackpotstoapproximatelytheirmiddlepositionsandtheFilterswitchtotheupposition.Nowconnecttheboardbetweenyourguitarandampandpoweritup.Youshouldgetsignalthroughtheeffect,althoughyoumaynothearanyflangingyet.Ifyoudonothaveanysignal,doublecheckyourconnectionsandensurethattherearenobugsinyourbuild.

    FirstadjusttheBiastrimpotuntilyougetsomeflanging.Youdonthavetobeprecise,justgettheBBDworking.NextadjusttheClocktrimpottothepointwhereyouachieveawidesweepwithminimumnoise.Iftheflangestartstooscillateatthebottomofitssweepyouwillneedtodoalittlemoreadjustment.GobackandtweaktheBiastrimpotfurtherclockwiseuntilyougetsmoothupanddownflangewithoutanyexcessivefeedbackoroscillationatthepeaksofthesweep.SettheFeedbackcontrolfullyclockwiseandgentlyadjustT1clockwiseuntilyougetthemaximumfeedbackdesired(T1actsasalimittothemaximumallowedfeedback).ContinuemakingminoradjustmentstothetrimmerswhiletestingthelimitsoftheRate,RangeandFeedbackcontrols.Describingthisprocessmakesitseemmorecomplicatedthanitactuallyis:yourearwillbetheguideinachievingthebestsoundacrossthewidestrangeofcontrolsettings.
