As we go towards the poles, the speed decreases, reaching almost zero at the poles. Because of this difference in speed, any moving body(winds, ocean currents etc) get deflected when they move towards the equator or away from the equator. This force of deflection is called Coriolis force. It was later elaborated by Ferrel and is known as Ferrel’s law. It states that all moving bodies like wind and ocean currents get deflected from their normal paths towards right in the northern hemisphere and towards left in the southern hemisphere. Rate of deflection increases with the distance from equator.

    Sumant Kumar, B.Tech NIT Allahabad Consider the following statements regarding Ocean gyres : 1. A gyre is any large system of

    circulating ocean currents, particularly those involved with large wind movements.

    2. Gyres are caused by the Coriolis effect;

    3. Planetary vorticity along with horizontal and vertical friction, determine the circulation patterns from the wind curl (torque).

    Which of the statements given above is/are correct? (a) 1 and 2 only (b) 2 only (c) 1 and 3 only (d) 1, 2 and 3 only Ans : (d) 1, 2 and 3 only

    Coriolis Force : On the rotating earth, a point on the equator moves fastest.

    As we go towards the poles, the speed decreases, reaching almost zero at the poles.

    Because of this difference in speed, any moving body(winds, ocean currents etc) get deflected when they move towards the equator or away from the equator. This force of deflection is called Coriolis force.

    It was later elaborated by Ferrel and is known as Ferrels law.

    It states that all moving bodies like wind and ocean currents get

    deflected from their normal paths towards right in the northern hemisphere and towards left in the southern hemisphere.

    Rate of deflection increases with the distance from equator.

  • The following are the five most notable gyres: 1. Indian Ocean Gyre (generally flowing counter-

    clockwise) 2. North Atlantic Gyre 3. North Pacific Gyre 4. South Atlantic Gyre 5. South Pacific Gyre

    Because the Coriolis effect is strongest near the poles, water

    flowing eastward at high latitudes turns sooner and is "short circuiting" the gyre.

    At the equator the Coriolis effect is nonexistent and the water flows westward until it encounters a blocking continent.

    Westward boundary currents are therefore faster and deeper than eastern boundary currents, and the geostrophic hill is offset to the west.
