Sports: November 2010Indians win six medals

Indians won three silver and three bronze medals in the World youth chess championship

that concluded at Porto Carras Halkidiki (Greece).

    Viswanathan Anand finishes second

World champion Viswanathan Anand pulled off a fine victory over Etienne Bacrot of France to

finish second in the Pearl Spring Chess tournament in Nanjing.

Anand, who lost to Bacrot in the fourth round earlier, took a sweet revenge, finishing on a high in

this super tournament between six players.

    The results (final round):

    V. Anand (6) bt Etienne Bacrot (5); Veselin Topalov (4.5) bt Wang Yue (3); Magnus Carlsen (7)

    drew with Vugar Gashimov (4.5).

    ICC dismisses Pakistan cricketers' appeal

The code of conduct commissioner of the International Cricket Council (ICC), Michael Beloff,

rejected the appeals of Pakistan cricketers Salman Butt and Mohammad Amir against suspensions

    for spot-fixing.

The two, along with fast bowler Mohammad Asif, were provisionally suspended by the ICC over

allegations they were involved in spot-fixing during Pakistan's summer tour of England.

Kim Clijsters is the Queen of Doha

Kim Clijsters of Belgium won the WTA Championships final, beating World No. 1

Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in Doha.

Clijsters won her fifth WTA title of the year, following triumphs in Brisbane, Miami,

    Cincinnati and the U.S. Open.

France's Gael Monfils won his third career title on Sunday, beating Croatia's Ivan

Ljubicic 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 in the final of the Montpellier ATP tournament.

It was third time lucky for the World No. 15 who was beaten twice in the finals this yearin Stuttgart and Tokyo.

At St. Petersburg, Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi missed out on capturing

their second ATP title of the season after losing a fiercely-fought final to Daniele

Bracciali and Starace Potito 6-7(6), 6-7 (5) in one hour and 36 minutes at the St.

    Petersburg Open.

The duo though earned 150 ATP ranking points each which will help them stay in

contention for a place in the season-ending and prestigious World Tour finals.

Wozniacki ends the year as No. 1

Caroline Wozniacki has ended the year as World No. 1 despite losing to Kim Clijsters in the final

of the WTA Championships in Doha.

The Dane has also yet to win a Grand Slam tournament, but her consistency and frequency of

play over the year meant that she easily had enough points to top the rankings.

Clijsters, who also won the U.S. Open in September, had to settle for third place, her best end-of-

    year finish since 2005.

Second place went to Vera Zvonareva of Russia, who lost in the finals at Wimbledon and the U.S.

    Open.

Australian Open and Wimbledon winner Serena Williams fell to fourth.

Anand back as World No. 1

A slender gain for Viswanathan Anand and a mighty fall of Magnus Carlsen has helped the Indian

World chess champion to regain the World No. 1 spot in the latest ranking list released

In the past two months, Anand gained four ranking points to reach his career-best 2804 points

while in the same period, Carlsen lost a whopping 24 points to slip to the second spot.

Anand last held the number one spot on September 30, 2008. His previous best ranking was 2803,

    posted in April 2008.

For the first time, the Indian list has nine players with ratings of 2600 and above.

    The rankings:

    World (top-10):

    1. Viswanathan Anand (2804),

Fix age limit for sports body chiefs"

The Delhi High Court directed the Centre to implement its National Sports Policy, which fixes 70

years as the upper age limit and 12 years as the maximum tenure for chiefs of sports federations.

Sri Lanka claims first-ever series in Australia

Sri Lanka claimed its first-ever series success in Australia with a win against Ricky

Ponting's team in the rain-marred second One-Day International at the Sydney Cricket

    Ground.

The Sri Lankans won by 29 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method after several rain

interruptions and followed their stunning one-wicket victory in the opening match in

    Melbourne.

Haider quits, seeks asylum in the UK

Pakistan wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider, who abandoned the team and flew to London,

announced his retirement from international cricket after revealing that he had received

    death threats.

Qinan pushes Narang to second spot

Gagan Narang stumbled at the start and finish and had to settle for two silver medals as

India opened its shooting campaign on a healthy note in the Asian Games in

    GUANGZHOU.

Advani pots his way to gold

Pankaj Advani unleashed his best in the climax in billiards to clasp India's first gold in

    the Asian Games .

Advani had won the title in the last edition in Doha, and that had happened to be India's

second gold medal then, in an eventual collection of 10.

The gold continued to elude Indian shooters as the women's air pistol team fell one point

short of the top score in the Asian Games.

On a day when Vijay Kumar came up with a surprise bronze medal, with the best

performance among the eight finalists after being eighth at the end of qualification series

in men's air pistol that is not his main event, the trio of Heena Sidhu, Annuraj Singh and

Sonia Rai lost the gold to Korea but hung on to the silver, a point ahead of China.

After Gagan Narang, Abhinav Bindra and Sanjeev Rajput had missed the air rifle gold by

one point earlier to China, it was the second expensive slip from the Indian shooting

    squad.

    Bhupathi-Mirnyi duo wins title

The Indo-Belarusian pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi defeated the duo of Mark

Knowles of the Bahamas and Andy Ram of Israel 7-5, 7-5 to claim the Paris Masters

    doubles title.

This was the first title for duo since 2004 following a string of seven Tour-level titles in

the period from 2002 to 2004.

Khade ends India's 24-year medal drought

Virdhawal Khade declared that he was a star swimmer in the making as he won the

bronze medal in the 50m butterfly event at the Asian Games .

The 19-year-old Khade clocked 24.31s to land India's first medal in swimming after a gap

of 24 years in the Asian Games. Khazan Singh had won the last swimming medal for

India, a silver in the 200m butterfly at the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul.

The only gold for Indian swimming had come through Sachin Nag in the inaugural

edition of the Asiad in Delhi in 1951, in the 100m freestyle.

    Indians garner two silvers

The Indian rowers kept part of their promise in scooping two silver medals from the lake

in the Asian Games at the International Rowing Centre, near Liuxi river.

The silver medals came in the men's lightweight four and men's coxless fourevents for

India, as China swept six of the seven gold medals on offer thisday, to take its gold medal

haul in the current Asian Games past the 100 mark.

The Indian team of Lokesh Kumar, Satish Joshi, Rajesh Kumar Yadav andManjeet Singh

clocked 6:13.32 in finishing second in the lightweight fours final, about three seconds

behind Japan which maintained its supremacy throughout the race. In fact, the Indian

team had to be more worried about keeping ahead of Hong Kong that was breathing

    down the neck.

Though India had not won a medal in this event, after a bronze in 1998, it was tipped to

be a favourite for the silver and even push Japan hard for a possible gold, based on its

current form. With rules not allowing a country to compete in more than 10 of the 14

events, host China had opted to give it a miss.

Bajrang Lal wins India's second gold

Bajrang Lal Takhar led from start to finish in the men's single sculls event, to clinch

India's second gold medal, and the first ever gold in rowing, in the Asian Games .

It was a moment that Indian rowing had been awaiting for four years, ever since the team

had won two silver medals and a bronze, in the last Asian Games in Doha.

Bajrang Lal was the undisputed hero of the day, as he warded off a late surge from Ming

Hui Wang of Chinese Taipei with a touch of assurance to win by a length. It was my aim

to win the Asian Games gold. I am very happy that I have fulfilled it, said Bajrang of the

Rajputana Rifles in the Indian army.

    Preeja, Kavita one-two in 10,000m

Indian women made an explosive start to their Asian Games athletics campaign, with

Preeja Sreedharan, a Railway employee based at Palakkad, and Kavita Raut scripting an

unprecedented one-two in the 10,000 metres and Sudha Singh winning the 3000 metressteeplechase gold at the end of the opening day's programme.

Never before had the country won a medal in this event in the Asian Games, included in

the programme from 1986. No one could have imagined that there could be a gold-silver

sweep by Indians in the 25-lapper, barring perhaps the proud medallists themselves and

    their coach, Nikolai Snesarev.

Preeja Sreedharan won India's fourth gold medal at the 16th Asian Games in

Guangzhou when she triumphed in the women's 10,000m final. Preeja's success was

preceded by shooter Ronjan Sodhi (men's double trap) and followed by athlete

    Sudha Singh (women's 3000m steeplechase).

Ronjan Sodhi wins double trap gold

Ronjan Sodhi asserted his class yet again, as he clinched the elusive gold in shooting in

the Asian Games, with an overwhelming performance in the double trap final, at the

    Guangzhou Shotgun Centre.

In a season in which he has been in brilliant form on the big stages, the World Cup and

the World Cup Finals, shooting the big scores and winning gold against the best in the

business, as if a matter of right, the 31-year-old Sodhi was easily one of the favourites inthe event, though the Chinese were strong at home.

Ranked No.3 in the world, the best in the field that had five top-10 shooters that included

the three Chinese, Sodhi had the handicap of being four points behind the leader, Pan

Qiang of China, going into the final, with a total of 139 following a series of 47, 44 and

    48. Yet, he silenced everyone with a spectacular performance, shooting 47 out of 50, to

win by a four-point margin over Shaikh Almaktoum of UAE.

Memorable day for Sanam Singh and Devvarman

Somdev Devvarman and Sanam Singh clinched the men's doubles gold medal in tennis inthe Asian Games.

With the young Sanam providing the fireworks and Devvarman lending solidity, the

Indian duo followed in the footsteps of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, in

performing a hat-trick of gold for India in the event, with a 6-3, 6-7(4), 10-8 victory over

the second-seeded Gong Maoxin and Li Zhe of China.

Paes and Bhupathi had saved seven matchpoints on way to defending the title in the last

edition in Doha against the Ratiwatana twins, Sanchai and Sonchat of Thailand, who

were seeded No. 1 in the current draw but had lost their first match.

The gold medal, in the absence of Paes, Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna, was a huge tonic

for the young players, particularly after the heart-breaking loss for Sania Mirza and

Vishnu Vardhan in the mixed doubles final against the second-seeded Yung Jan Chan and

Tsung Hua Yang of Chinese Taipei earlier.

    Another golden day for Devvarman

Somdev Devvarman won his second gold medal of the Asian Games, demolishing topseed Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-1, 6-2 in the men's singles final.

It called for a solid gameplan to beat the 40th-ranked Istomin, who has had a fine run this

season. The Uzbek played a thrilling five-setter against eventual runner-up Tomas

Berdych before losing in the third round at Wimbledon.

India makes short work of the Kiwis

A buzzing Indian attack made short work of New Zealand at the VCA Stadium on the

fourth day to win the contest by a whopping innings and 198 runs. Dhoni's men clinched

    the three-Test series 1-0.

Rahul Dravid's monumental 191 won him the Man-of-the-Match' award. And Harbhajan

Singh was adjudged the Player-of-the-Series' for his all-round effort of 315 runs at an

average of 105.00 and 10 wickets at 42.00.

    Historic first

Somdev Devvarman won India's first gold medal in Asian Games tennis singles after

upsetting top-seeded Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-1, 6-2 in the men's final. This is the first

time since Japan's Toshiro Sakai in the 1974 Tehran Asiad that a player has swept bothsingles and doubles golds at the same Games.

    China retains women's gold

China retained the gold medal and completed a hat-trick of triumphs in the Asian Games

    women's hockey competition since 2002.

India lost 3-0 to Japan during the league phase.

    Final positions: 1.China, 2. South Korea, 3. Japan, 4. India, 5. Malaysia, 6. Thailand, 7.

    Kazakhstan.

Ashwini and Joseph Abraham sweep hurdles titles

Joseph Abraham and A. C. Ashwini pulled off impossible-looking gold medals in the 400

metres hurdles to give a tremendous boost to India's overall medals tally on the

penultimate day of track and field action in the Asian Games at the Guangdong Olympic

    Stadium .

It was the first-ever gold medal for India in the men's event in the Asiad and the first one

after P. T. Usha's triumph in Seoul in 1986 in the women's event. Abraham clocked

49.96s, the same that he timed for his silver here in the Asian championships last year,

just 0.45s shy of his personal best and National record. Ashwini clocked a PB of 56.15s.

    India bags four more golds

Vijender Singh's 7-0 win over Uzbekistan's Abbos Atoev for the men's 75-kg boxing title

capped a productive day for India at the Guangzhou Asian Games.

The country won four gold medals on day 14, taking its overall tally to a record 64medals. India's previous best haul was 57, garnered at the 1982 Delhi Asiad.

The day started with India extending its domination in kabaddi, with both the men's and

women's teams claiming gold with wins over Iran and Thailand.

The 37-20 win over Iran marked the sixth occasion that India has finished first in men's

kabaddi since its introduction in the 1990 edition. The Indian women beat Thailand 28-14

to clinch the inaugural women's kabaddi gold of the Games

Following this, the women's 4x400m relay team, comprising A.C. Ashwini, Manjeet

Kaur, Sini Jose and Mandeep Kaur, reprised their Commonwealth Games performance to

land India's third gold medal of the day. Then, Vijender Singh put aside his

disappointment from the Commonwealth Games, where he was knocked out in the

semifinals, to register a comfortable win over Atoev.

The victory took India's gold haul to 14, one shy of its all-time best of 15, which was

achieved at the inaugural Delhi Games in 1951.

Indian women's relay team wins gold

The anticipated gold rush on the final day of track and field action did not come about forIndia in the Asian Games.

The women's 4x400 metres relay team brought home the last gold for the country from

the Guangdong Olympic Stadium while Preeja Sreedharan and Kavita Raut added a silver

and a bronze each to the collection.

Vijender lands gold with splendid display

World No.1 Vijender Singh capped India's fine performance in boxing and provided a fitting

climax to the contingent's campaign in the Asian Games by humbling the two-time World

champion Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan 7-0 for a memorable gold in the middleweight final at theFoshan Gymnasium.

After the bronze medal in the last edition in Doha, it was a big jump forward for the 25-year-old

Vijender, but it was no surprise as he has been growing steadily in stature in the last two years,

winning the Olympic and world championship medals.

Spectacular end to 16th edition of Games

It was a spectacular climax to the 16th Asian Games, as China showcased the power and

    the Games.

Triumphant Federer eyes return to the top

Roger Federer believes his ATP World Tour Finals triumph against Rafael Nadal will

provide him with the perfect springboard to return to the top in 2011.

Although Federer is publicly adamant he has nothing to be disappointed about over the

last 12 months, privately he will feel a nagging sense of regret at the loss of the world

No.1 ranking to Nadal, who also took the French Open and Wimbledon titles from the

    Swiss star.

That was what made the 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Nadal in the final at London's O2

Arena so significant for the world No. 2.

    Nadal tops rankings

Rafael Nadal has finished the year firmly atop the world rankings despite losing to Roger Federer in the
