RBI sets up advisory panel for national bill payment system

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has constituted an advisory group to implement a national bill paymentsystem enabling households to pay utility bills, school fees and remittances using their bank accounts.The 9 member group, headed by Umesh Bellur of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay. The panelwould suggest the nature of the payment platform either an existing one or through a new entity forGiro (general inter-bank recurring order) based bill payments. A Giro is a payment instruction from onebank account to another. It facilitates payments through cash, cheques, credit/debit cards and prepaidpayment instruments, transferring funds to the bank accounts of beneficiaries.

Axis Bank was the first lender to start the electronic know-your-customer (e-KYC) facility, which wouldfacilitate Aadhaar-registered individuals to step into a branch and open an account, merely by providinghis/her unique identification number, after which the person’s fingerprints would be scanned. On 24th

October 2013, UIDAI chief Nandan Nilekani along with Shikha Sharma, managing director and chiefexecutive of Axis Bank launched the e-KYC facility at the Axis Bank headquarters in Mumbai.

FIPB approves Singapore Airlines' proposal to start Joint venture with Tata Sons

The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) on 24th October 2013 gave green signal to SingaporeAirlines' proposal to start an aviation venture with Tata Sons. In the new venture Tata SIA Airlines Ltd,the Tata Sons would hold 51 per cent stake and Singapore Airlines 49 per cent. With this, decks arecleared for Tata SIA to launch operations as a full-service air carrier in the country.
