World's 'first data storage system' discovered in Iran

Scientists have discovered the world’s “very first data storage system” 5,500-year-old clay ballsunearthed in Iran that were used for record-keeping in Mesopotamia. The balls were sealed and scansrevealed that they contain tokens in a variety of geometric shapes, varying from golf ball-size tobaseball-size. The interpretation that they were for data storage is based on a 3,300-year-old clay ballfound at a site named Nuzi.

According to a ministry of tourism report on tourism statistics for 2012, the top ten States in terms ofnumber of domestic tourist visits (in millions), during 2012, were Andhra Pradesh (206.8), Tamil Nadu(184.1), Uttar Pradesh (168.4),Karnataka (94.1), Maharashtra (66.3), Madhya Pradesh (53.2), Rajasthan(28.6), Uttarakhand (26.8), Gujarat (24.4) and West Bengal (22.7). The contribution of these States wasabout 84.5% to the total number of domestic tourist visits during 2012. The top ten States in terms ofnumber of Foreign Tourists Visits (FTVs) (in millions) during 2012 were Maharashtra (5.1), Tamil Nadu(3.6), Delhi (2.3), Uttar Pradesh (2.0), Rajasthan (1.5), West Bengal (1.2), Bihar (1.1), Kerala (0.8),Karnataka (0.6) and Himachal Pradesh (0.5). Economy moving towards stagflation: CII survey of CEOs

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said on 14th October 2013, that its survey of CEOs indicatedthe economy was moving towards stagflation. Stagflation refers to a situation where economic growth istoo low and inflation is too high, leading to high unemployment levels. The situation indicates a dilemmafor policymakers, since actions designed to cut inflation may aggravate unemployment.

Global Hunger Index 2013: India Ranks 63rd

The number of hungry people in the world was estimated at 842 million in 2011-13 by the GlobalHunger Index (GHI). About a quarter of the world's hungry, or 210 million, are in India alone. Thenumber of hungry people has dropped in India with its score on the Global Hunger Index improving to63rd position in 2013, but the country still lags behind China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In2012, India stood at 67th position on GHI.

India represents 40% of world's child marriages.

India, the world's child marriage capital, has once again failed its under-age brides. The country hasrefused to sign the first-ever global resolution on early and forced marriage of children led by the UN.India has the record of having the highest absolute number of child brides: about 24 million. Thisrepresents 40% of the 60 million world's child marriages. The percentage of women between the ages of20 and 24 who were married before 18 years of age has decreased from 54% in 1992-93 to 43% in 2007-08, thus showing a reduction of 11% in 15 years. India introduced laws against child marriage in 1929,and set 12 years as the legal age for marriage. Later, it was increased to 18 years in 1978.
