Science in Museums - Partnership with SMILE & GEM11 February, 10.30am - 4pm, Liverpool World Museum This event is for heritage educators looking to develop ways of engaging learners through science. The day will examine the new National Curriculum for science and explore a range of case studies including some practical activities in World Museum Liverpool’s exciting galleries. This event is delivered by the SMILE network, in partnership with Curious Minds, Museum Development North West, National Museums Liverpool and the Group for Education in Museums. What is the Role of Culture Within SMSC?5 February, 1.15pm - 4pm, The Womans Organisation, Liverpool What is the role of culture within SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural development)? Facilitated by Bernie Furey Assistant Head at St Ambrose Barlow (Teaching School Alliance) and Peter Ward Head of Art and SMSC at Childwall Sports and Science Academy. Both are Specialist Leaders in Cultural Education, and this event will explore how schools use SMSC within their settings.

The course will unpick the issues facing young people today and how these vulnerabilities can affect their participation. We will identify what prevents these young people from engaging and consider how you can make your offer more relevant, as well as looking at planning, setting up groups, boundaries and behaviour. How to Work With ‘Hard To Reach’ Young People11 March, 10am - 4pm, Museum of Lancashire For: Arts & cultural professionals working with children & young people Delivered by youth engagement expert Helen Thompson from Participation Works, this course will take an in-depth look at how to find and engage ‘Hard to Reach’ young people. Some young people simply do not or cannot access the universal offers made to all. We will look in detail at why this is and plan some practical and feasible actions that would support the engagement of these groups in bespoke and universal projects. This year’s conference has a strong focus on creating that all too precious time and space to talk, listen and debate. We want to hear more about and celebrate the work that you’re already doing, but we also want you to bring questions, issues and top tips to share. Working with schools Bespoke surgeries available We are now offering a tailor-made surgery session for you and your colleagues. The surgery will give you focussed time to learn more about the latest changes in education, to consider school priorities and needs and to make a plan of action about how to develop your offer to schools.
