PASTOR’S NOTES

MASS INTENTIONS

The Greatest Commandment: Love

On this 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time Cycle B, we are rapidly approaching the end of the Church’s Liturgical Year. During this past year, we have learned many lessons from Mark’s Gospel. Soon we will celebrate the Solemn Feast of Christ the King, the last Sunday in the Liturgical Year on November 25. Then on December 2, the First Sun-day of Advent, we will begin Cycle Year C, featuring the Gospel ac-cording to St. Luke. Many times in our Gospel readings, we hear about Scribes and Pharisees confronting Jesus, trying to challenge Him with their barrage of questions and accusations. The scribe in today’s Gospel is different. He is sincere in his inquiry. He is not trying to trap Jesus. He really wants to know an answer to his question: which is the most important commandment? In His reply, Jesus emphasized love and quoted from the Old Testament Law, Deuteronomy, as we heard in the First Reading: “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone! Therefore, you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.” Jesus continued His answer with the second of the command-ments: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The scribe then praised Jesus for the accuracy of His response, and added that the value of this love far exceeded that of any sacrificial offering. How do we love ourselves? We love ourselves by knowing who we are and whose we are. First of all, we belong to God; we are members of the Body of Christ. We must know ourselves with all our gifts, talents and flaws, and we must accept ourselves that way – not try to be someone who we are not. Then we can love others as we love ourselves. When we reflect on the Feast of All Souls which we celebrated just two days ago, we are struck with the importance of love. Love nev-er dies. In the Preface for the Mass of Christian Burial, we are comfort-ed to hear the words that life is changed, not ended.

We recall from 1 John 4:8, “God is Love.” As members of the

Body of Christ, let us emulate that love and pray for one another as well as for our brothers and sisters in purgatory.

Holy Hour and Benediction

Join us this Tuesday, November 6th for a Holy Hour and Benediction as we pray Our Parish Family Weekly Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

The institution of marriage and family is under attack in our culture today. This breakdown of marriage has been devastating to families and society.

Do you know of marriages that are struggling? Families that need strengthening? Do you have loved ones who have left the faith? Please join us Tuesday evening at 6 pm in the church to pray for marriages, families, vocations and for those who have left the faith to return to the Sacraments. This is for the whole family – children included. We will pray this beautiful and powerful novena together as we call on Our Lady’s intersession for these and your personal intentions, and have adoration and Benediction before the Blessed Sacrament.
