We ran a competition with amazing prizes. Our mysterious Stigs circulated and invited people to take selfies to add to our Facebook page. The results were heartening:

The person with the most ‘likes’ for each company was invited to enter a race. They had to race through an obstacle course using remote controlled cars. We had some near wipe-outs! The excitement grew and the crowd helped by shouting instructions to the drivers. Prizes worth over R81,000 were handed over to the three lucky winners. It was really great fun and the winners got to keep their cars too!

We are also partnering with Rhino Africa, one of our clients to transport 120 children and some of their carers to Monkey Town.

Earlier this year we transported the children to the Two Oceans Aquarium and it is truly heart-warming to see their little faces light up with excitement when they see the big coaches arrive and they scramble aboard - their first trip on a bus!

016 has certainly seen a major turnaround in inbound tourism and we are very happy to report

a fantastic and successful first half of the financial year.

If all things remain as is, we will end with the best year ever in the history of Springbok Atlas Tours and Safaris.

All markets have shown great growth, in particular USA, Canada, Italy, and Germany. Forward bookings have all materialised and the “wash factor” is very low in the current climate.

Much has been attributed to the weak South African Rand, the end of the Ebola virus on the African continent and the fact that Southern Africa is regarded as a relatively safe destination in light of European and other country issues.

For the past 6 months we have been quite active on the sales front; attending travel shows abroad and domestically - ITLM Africa, WTM Africa, ITB Berlin, & Indaba, as well as dedicated sales trips to USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, UK, & Holland and Belgium.

I wish to thank all my dedicated, committed, loyal and hard driven staff for their outstanding performance.

Our crew has sailed hard for the last 6 months. Despite the fluctuation of the rand and the onset of winter, the crew has managed to sail up wind and steer the ship on a good course. This comes at no surprise to me if I look at the members of the team. We have partnered with Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront to promote the Aqualung brand in South Africa as well as grow the diving sport in Cape Town.

We were involved in quite a few sailing and diving events in the past 6 months to promote our products. We have launched a brand new diving watch range and the feedback has been very positive.

THoMPsoNs eNTeRed THe ‘MIdMAR MILe’... ...over the weekend of the 11/12 February,” reports Wendy Schulze, senior leisure manager, “and with the help of everyone at Thompsons we managed to raise R12,500 for CHOC.” Wendy was one of five swimmers that plunged in wearing CHOC costumes.

The Thompsons team each received this medal for completing the race….”and here’s our resident crazy cow Jacqui Trollope,” wrote Wendy. The CHOC Foundation was established in 1979 as a support group for parents of children with cancer, founded by parents of young cancer victims.

“Having experienced the immense emotional and financial toll that cancer takes, they recognised that there’s more than one victim in the family,” explained Wendy. “Their aim is to ease the burden on parents facing the same journey by providing access to relevant, accurate information, as well as emotional and practical support.”

Seen out there…doing it for Children with Childhood Cancer, Jacqui Trollope, Wendy Schulze and Nicole Robb. They are involved with COWS…’Udderly committed to FUNdraising’. “In 2008, COWS, the fundraising arm of CHOC (Children with Childhood Cancers), started out as a group of eight people riding the Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge,” explains Wendy.

“By 2012, a ‘herd’ of 400 participated, generating R3.45 million! To date the ever-growing herd has raised more than R17 million for CHOC!,” said Wendy, “and a full calendar of events leaves little time for ‘grazing’.”

“In 2017 we will be entering another bigger and stronger team with the aim of raising more awareness and money, so Thompsons for Travel will once again get ‘udderly’ involved in our CHOC costumes and hit the dam,” says Wendy Schulze, who invites you to contact her if you’d like to be involved.
