From the Pastor's Desk

Greetings Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

May Christ bestow upon you his grace and may the Holy Spirit dwell within your hearts. Amen.

I first want to thank all of you for such a warm welcome as your new pastor. I am humbled at such a response of hospitality that you have shown to me. I hope that you are as eager and excited as I am to travel together in our life in faith. I look forward to getting to know you and sharing the love you have for our Lord.

Together, we need to take time to pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We will discern how, and to what ministries God is leading us to as we work together.

Therefore, I am going to begin a bible study on prayer. I have chosen prayer because I be-lieve it draws us to dwell in the very breath of God. Prayer feeds our spiritual hunger, gives strength to us when we are weary, lifts our soul from darkness into light, and leads us into the path of ministry that God intends for us. This is why I have chosen prayer as our begin-ning together.

I have a practice called “Centering Prayer”. It is when I sit in silence and let that silence sift out the sounds around me. As I repeat the “Jesus Prayer”, my breathing begins to slow and my thoughts are less. I am invited by the silence to listen for God. I have been doing this prayer practice for most of my life. As a child I never had a name for it, because it was so natural for me to sit in the sanctuary and pray. When I met my spiritual director in seminary, I found out that it actually had a name and seminarians were being encouraged to learn this spiritual practice. It proved to be somewhat difficult for some because sitting in silence is not what Lutherans do well. Mother Teresa was once asked about her prayer life. The interviewer asked, “When you pray, what do you say to God?” Mother Teresa replied, “I don’t talk, I simply listen.” Prayer will be an intricate part of our journey, and as we learn to listen to God, we will learn to lis-ten more intently to one another. Yours in the Lord’s service,

Pastor Deb

Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have

them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15The

prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone

who has committed sins will be forgiven. 16Therefore confess your sins to one

another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of

the righteous is powerful and effective. James 5:14-16 (NRSV)

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Tomato Casserole

Prep time: 10 min |Cook time: 30 min |Yield: About 4 to 6 servings

1½ lb. of tomatoes, chopped (about 4 cups)

½ tsp kosher salt

¼ tsp black pepper

½ tsp Creole seasoning

½ tsp of fresh basil, chopped

2 Tb packed light brown sugar

2 slices of bacon

1 Tb of butter

1 cup of chopped onion

½ cup of chopped green pepper

¼ cup of chopped celery

1 tsp of minced garlic

1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese

½ sleeve of crushed Ritz crackers

1 Tb of butter, melted Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a 9 x 9 inch baking pan. Place chopped

tomatoes in a large colander to drain for 10 minutes. Transfer tomatoes to a bowl and add the salt,

pepper, Cajun seasoning, basil and brown sugar. Mix well and set aside. Cook off the bacon in a

large skillet until fat is rendered but bacon is not to crisp; remove and set aside. Add butter to the

pan drippings and add the onion,

bell pepper, celery and garlic; saute until tender, about 4 minutes. Chop the cooked bacon and add

to the skillet, along with the tomatoes; mix well and warm through. Taste and adjust seasonings.

Use a slotted spoon to transfer tomato mixture to the prepared pan, sprinkle with the shredded

cheese. Combine crushed crackers and melted butter and sprinkle on top.

Bake at 350 degrees F for about 30 minutes, or until casserole is bubbly and crumbs are browned.

Casserole will generate some additional liquid, so use a slotted spoon to serve immediately as a side

dish, or scoop on toasted baguette slices for an appetizer.
