EU: 25% of GDP growth and 40% of productivity growth are due to ICT

EU: Differences in economic performance between industrialized countries are largely explained by levels of ICT investment, ICT research, and -use, and by the competitiveness of information society and media industries.

Impact of ICT on the EconomyImpact of ICT on the Economy

Sources: (1) i2010 A European Information Society for growth and employment; (2) CBS Digitale Economie 2006; (3) ICT Office 2007

NL: ICT sector is one of the most important sectors, both in size (7% of Dutch GDP, >24,000 companies, 30 bln Euro) and in growth rate (>2% above average)

NL: ICT plays an important role in the growth of productivity in ALL domains were ICT is used in. 50% of production gains are attributed to ICT.

ICT: from enabling technology to constitutive technology

ICT: from enabling technology to constitutive technology

ICT is much more than just a tool.ICT constitutes (becomes part of) the things to which it is applied.

ICT does not just enable us to do new things, it shapes how we do them.

It transforms, enriches and becomes an integral part of almost everything we do.

Page 38: CTIT and Innovation, Iddo Bante

We have not fully exploited the potential of ICT as driver of innovation

Systematic introduction and use of ICT is not enough to reap all the possible benefits.

ICT today is just a foretaste of the opportunities that progress in ICT can offer to people, business and governments

The challenges are there both for (1) research on ICT, and (2) the various fields were ICT is used

ICT makes new applications possible. The added value is in the application. But without technological advances no new applications

Problem:ICT does not just enable us to do new things, it shapes how we do them. But many promising ICT research remains in the lab because it is difficult to access the value of experimenting with these technologies in a realistic setting.

Phase 1 - SmartXP lab (Smart eXPerience lab): End-users work/play with state-of-the-art technology and their perception guide the further development of technology.Academic plus industrial researchers from a wide range of disciplines (engineering and behavioral sciences) work closely together with end-users.

Goal and effects:- Facilitating end-user oriented innovation approach; - More efficient usage of research funds; - Shorter time-to-market of innovative products and services.
