College of Liberal ArtsCollege Tuition and Budget Advisory Committee Application for the 2014-2015 Academic Year

Established in the fall of 2010, the Liberal Arts CTBAC was designed to help identify academic priorities for students in the college, recommend changes in tuition, and advise on the budget. Each year, the committee is comprised of undergraduate and graduate students who are tasked with educating students on the budget- and tuition-setting process, gathering student feedback, and proposing tuition and budgetary recommendations to the Dean of Liberal Arts and the University Provost. The recommendations of the CTBAC will be available for public comment from the college community.

This committee serves the interests of students, faculty, the dean and department chairs, and university administrators. Students will benefit from being involved in helping shape the future of their college. In addition to speaking on behalf of their peers, student committee members will also help college administrators communicate with the student body about the tuition and budget-setting process and thereby help to generate student engagement and support for the college’s fiscal decisions.

The college dean benefits when his or her students are informed and engaged in the decision-making process. A dean whose students participate and invest in tuition and budget discussions will strengthen the bonds students have to their particular college. Moreover, tuition and budget proposals submitted by deans will carry more weight with university administrators (Provost, President, etc.) if their students and faculty support them.

University-wide leaders (President, Provost, CFO) benefit from an informed engaged student body at the college level. CTBACs will help insure the tuition and budget-setting process is more transparent and inclusive. Through CTBACs, students have a voice in helping identify the strategic needs and priorities of their respective colleges and play a role in the future development of the University.

PurposeCTBAC will serve various purposes within the College of Liberal Arts. The primary functions of the CTBAC include, but are not limited to, the following:

a. To discuss college-level academic priorities;

b. To consider the allocation of budget resources within the college necessary to achieve college-level priorities;

c. To recommend such tuition increases as are necessary to meet those priorities;

d. To solicit feedback from students, faculty, and staff; and

e. To work with other budget advisory committees to collect input from members of the university community about university-wide budgetary recommendations and changes.

Please direct any questions, comments or concerns to Liberal Arts CTBAC 2014-2015 Chair Rachel Osterloh ([email protected]).
