FRAGMENTS IS THE REDEVELOPMENT OF AN OUTDATED SHOPPING CENTRE SITUATED IN BRISBANE’S CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT. THE CONCEPT OF THE DESIGN IS DERIVED FROM THE SOCIETAL CHANGES FORECASTED FOR THE YEAR 2030.

IN THIS SCENARIO IT IS EXPECTED THAT PEOPLE WILL HAVE MORE FLEXIBLE WORKING HOURS LEADING TO 24 HOUR LIFESTYLES, THEREFORE, REQUIRING 24 HOUR RETAIL SUPPORT. HOWEVER, THE PROJECTED TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS SUCH AS INTERENT SHOPPING WILL LIKELY RENDER THE TRADITIONAL SHOPPING CENTRE OBSOLETE. TO MAINTAIN RELEVENCE IN THE PUBLIC EYE, FRAGMENTS HAS REIMAGINED THE ACT OF SHOPPING TO BE BASED AROUND THE EXPERIENCE OF THE USER. IT PROVIDES A PLATFORM FOR CASUAL CLASSES AND TANGIBLE TRIAL OF PRODUCTS. SHOPPING IS NO LONGER FOCUSED ON THE PURCHASE BUT THE ENTERTAINMENT OF THE USER AND CANNOT BE REPLACED WITH A VIRTUAL REALITY.

THE GLOBAL FOOD VILLAGE IS THE PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION OF THE CULTURAL AND ETHNIC COMMUNITIES THAT RESIDE WITHIN LOGAN; AN INLAND URBAN CENTRE WITHIN QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA. LOGAN IS CURRENTLY A TRANSIT CENTRE; ITS INHABITANTS LIVE IN A DENSELY POPULATED AREA BUT WORK ELSEWHERE, LEAVING THE STREETS EMPTY THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

THIS PERMENANT MARKET STRUCTURE ABSORBS AND EMULATES THE LIVELY CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EXISTING WEEKEND MARKETS WHICH PRESENTLY SERVE THE ASIAN, AFRICAN AND ISLANDER POPULATIONS, THEREBY, IGNITING THE BARE CONCRETE STREETS OF THE SURROUNDING AREA. THE MARKET’S CONTEXTUAL RESPONSE AND PLACEMENT WITHIN THE HEART OF THE PROPOSED PRECINCT PROVIDES A PERMANENT HOME FOR VENDORS AND RESIDENTS ALIKE.

THE FOUNDRY

THE FOUNDRY IS AN INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION ENTRY SUBMITTED IN 2014 WHICH RECEIVED A PLACE IN THE TOP 20. THIS GROUP EFFORT FEATURES TWO HISTORIC INDUSTRIAL SITES; AN OLD FOUNDRY AND A FLOUR MILL. IT IS SITUATED WITHIN THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT OF A REGIONAL AUSTRALIAN CITY NAMED TOOWOOMBA.

THE PROJECT AIMS TO REANIMATE THE INDUSTRIAL SITE BY REINSTITUTING THE MILL AND UTILIZING THE REST OF THE PRECINCT AS A SITE TO PROPAGATE AND NURTURE EDIBLE PLANTS. IN TURN IT SHALL SUPPORT THE CITY’S POPULATION BY PROVIDING A SELF SUSTAINING SOURCE OF FOOD, JOBS, VEGETABLES AND FLOUR TO BE TRADED WITH NEIGHBOURING REGIONS AND A NEW DEFINING FEATURE TO ATTRACT A STRONG COMMUNITY AS WELL AS TOURISTS.

I PREPARED DESIGN OPTIONS FOR TWO RESIDENTIAL HOUSES TO DEMONSTRATE THE FEASIBILITY OF A SITE FOR A CLIENT WHILE AT CDI ARCHITECTS. AS PART OF THIS PROCESS I EXPERIMENTED WITH DIFFERENT BUILDING FOOTPRINTS WHILE ADHERING TO RESTRICTIONS OF THE SITE (THE SEWER LINE AND EXISTING TREES) AND COUNCIL LAWS.

THE SQUARE SHAPE OF THE LOTS PERMITTED ME TO ARGUE FOR SMALLER SETBACKS FROM THE SITE BOUNDARIES.
