for bboys, fresh was the key and sneakers had quickly earned an honored spot in their stan-dard gear. they were comfy on the dance floor, but mostly, they looked good and could be matched to their clothes. in new york, everybody was looking at everyone else’s feet. the culture got so driven by shoes that people wanted to have fresh kicks everyday. Unfortunately few could afford it so most would stretch out their shoes by keeping them clean and fresh, creatively breathing new life into them with the use of color paints and a variety of shoelaces.

quickly becoming a status symbol, one could easily get jumped in the streets for them, leaving some to even carry a gun! as the craze climaxed, fanatics started looking for new ways to distin-guish themselves. digging for prints, for-eign made, and hard to find kicks gave way to sneaker hunting. this new sport eventually led many to secure more than a single pair of a favorite make in the event that it couldn’t be found again, hence giving birth to sneaker collecting.

today, hip hop and urban fashion make up at least 80% of the sneak-er market while only 20% of the pie is being claimed by the athletic market it was originally intended for. clearly at the forefront of this market’s economy, hip hop cul-ture has been operating the big-gest, most unexpected corporate takeover from the time of its very first steps.

i’m going to go out on a limB here and assume that you knoW that the sneaker industry has Become a Pretty Big deal in youth culture. sneakers are no longer just for Playing sPorts. PeoPle no longer throW a Pair aWay once they’ve Bought

a neW one. they’re no longer Produced in just one color and modest designs (you might have heard aBout the $50,000 diamond-emBellished nike air force ones

that Were Presented at the solitaire kicks launch a couPle years ago). even the stores that sell them, noW With anything from secret sliding doors to

chandeliers to Polished Wood fixtures, have changed dramatically. PeoPle sit on eBay for days Waiting to outBid for a sPecial Pair and likely keeP a sPecial

toothBrush sPecifically for keePing their kicks clean. But hoW did We get here? this is not an article on the “coolness” of sneakers, or sneaker culture or even

sneakerheads. We knoW all aBout that already. really, this is more aBout the rise of the comPeting nike and adidas emPires, and our love affair With these mega-

corPorations (though We like to Pretend they’re not).

sneaker companies weren’t always the giants with millions of loyal consumers that they are today. in fact, this whole phenomenon has really only been a hundred years in the making. in 1892, the american rubber company start-ed to produce shoes with rubber soles and canvas tops: keds. at around the same time, marquis converse established his own sneaker company and revolutionized the game of bas-ketball by creating the first performance sneak-er: the converse all star. these two companies were truly ahead of the game, and paved the way for two brothers in germany to register their little business of making handmade train-ing shoes in 1920: dassler brothers shoe factory. track star jesse owens won four gold medals at the 1936 olympics wearing dassler shoes. the brothers, adi and rudolf, worked togeth-er for twenty years before having a falling out and never speaking again. adi then renamed his company ‘adidas’ (after himself) and rudi went on to start a rival company, puma.

fast forward to 1964, when track athlete at the University of oregon, philip knight, and his coach, bill bowerman, started a little compa-ny that came to be known as nike, after the greek goddess of victory. the “swoosh” logo was designed by one of knight’s friends for a whopping $35. when nike started out, they knew the best way for them to succeed was by getting an athletic endorsement and had their sights set on michael jordan.

however jordan wasn’t keen on the idea, due to his allegiance to converse and adidas, but finally agreed in 1985, thus catapulting the company into the spotlight. the air jordan, with its bright colors, was so recognizable and distracting on the court that it was banned by the nba, a move that only made the sneaker and the company more famous. meanwhile, in the bronx, a huge hip hop movement had start-ed, which was hugely influenced by basketball culture. people came to be more interested in the actual fashion of the shoes, while still ap-preciating the athleticism. this would mark the true beginning of sneaker culture in the under-ground scenes.

by then, adidas was in some serious trouble. nike had taken the world by storm, adding bright colors on its shoes and developing patent technical innovations. in 1986, though, adidas got a huge and surprising break, when

crux art of life 29

Page 30: Crux Art of Life Shoe Fetish

nyc rap ensemble run dmc charted with their hit, my adidas, an homage to their fa-vorite footwear. legions of fans started copy-ing them and their trademark style of no laces and tongues out, which once again hurled the company back into the game. moreover, the 90s brought a revival of 70s fashion, causing all sorts of hipsters and skateboarders to rediscov-er the brand and bring it back to popularity. in the mid 90s, the brand divided into three seg-ments, of which “adidas originals”, specifical-ly represented by the trefoil logo, would focus on lifestyle and fashion. along with run dmc, other artists got to be very much associated with the brand: the beastie boys, korn, snoop, missy elliot and method man, to name a few.

nike, still the leader in sponsorships and sales, had done a phenomenal job of maintaining its relevance throughout the years, both as an athletic brand, and more recently as a fashion/lifestyle one. as the hands down leader in bas-ketball sneakers, nike naturally spilled over and became associated with all elements of hip hop culture, as basketball and hip hop have always been tightly knit. for this reason, nikes have become known as status symbols within the culture. just as adidas has had run dmc rapping about their favorite brand, nike has had artists like nelly and wale rapping about theirs. people began collecting them, trading them, downright praising them, and the rest is history.

today, a large portion of streetwear culture is utterly divided: either you love the swoosh or you love the trefoil. you find happiness in either air jordans or superstars. but at what point did you pick sides? was it because of the history of things, or the trend of the day? neither of these companies intended to infiltrate youth culture when they did. nevertheless, the trend was sparked and spread like wildfire, and both companies jumped on the opportunity to dominate yet another market. and for whatev-er reason, we love them for it.

« J’AIME BEAUCOUP LA MARqUE HUMMEL à CAUSE DE MON AMOUR POUR LE SOCCER. J’AI TOUJOURS AIMé CE SPORT ET J’AI COMMENCé à JOUER qUAND J’éTAIS ADOLESCENT. CETTE COMPAGNIE S’EST INVESTIE DANS LE SOCCER DEPUIS LES ANNéES 20 ET ELLE SAIT CE qU’ELLE FAIT. à ELLE SEULE, SON HISTOIRE DEVRAIT êTRE RESPEC-TéE, éTANT LE PREMIER BRAND AU MONDE à CRéER DES CHAUSSURES à CRAMPONS. LA PERSONNE qUI S’OCCUPE D’HUMMEL AU CANADA EST UN BON AMI à MOI. IL SAVAIT qUE J’AIMAIS UN STYLE MINIMAL AVEC DES COULEURS SIMPLES, ALORS, IL M’A DONNé EN CADEAU CES éCHANTILLONS UNIqUES VENANT DU JAPON. ILS SIGNIFIENT BEAUCOUP POUR MOI. »

“I REALLY LIKE THE BRAND BECAUSE OF MY LOVE FOR SOCCER. I ALWAYS LIKED THE SPORT AND STARTED PLAYING IT BACK WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER. HUMMEL HAS BEEN DOING SOCCER SINCE THE 20’S AND KNOW WHAT THEY’RE DOING. THEIR HISTORY ALONE IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE RESPECTED, THEY WERE THE FIRST IN THE WORLD TO CREATE CLEATS. THE GUY WHO TAKES CARE OF HUMMEL IN CANADA IS A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE. HE KNEW THAT I LIKED A MINIMAL LOOK WITH SIMPLE COLORS SO HE GAVE ME THESE “ONE OFF” SAMPLES FROM JAPAN AS A PRESENT. THEY MEAN A LOT TO ME.”

AVOIR LA CHAUSSURE PARFAITE éTAIT TRèS IMPORTANT, J’AVAIS DONC éCONOMISé POUR FINALEMENT M’ACHETER UNE PAIRE DE PUMA, CE qUI M’AVAIT BIEN PLU. qUELqUES ANNéES PASSéES, LORS D’UN VOYAGE à KYOTO, AU JAPON, J’AI VU CES ADIDAS TOP TEN DANS UN

“I HAVE A COLLECTION OF ABOUT 60 PAIRS ALTOGETHER, MOSTLY ADIDAS. I USED TO BREAK-DANCE BACK IN THE 80S, THAT’S WHEN MY SHOE THING ORIGINALLY STARTED. HAVING THE RIGHT SHOE WAS VERY IMPORTANT SO I HAD SAVED

UP AND FINALLY BOUGHT A PAIR OF PUMA, THAT WAS A GOOD FEELING. A FEW YEARS BACK, WHILE ON VACATION IN KYOTO, JAPAN, I SAW THESE ADIDAS TOP TEN IN A STORE. I WANTED THEM SO BAD. THEY WERE ON SALE FOR 45

DOLLARS, BUT THEY HAD NO MORE OF MY SIZE. THE GUY THEN LOOKED IN THE BACK AND THERE WAS ONE LAST PAIR! UNFORTUNATELY, I WOUND UP BLEEDING ON THESE THREE YEARS AGO DUE TO A PRETTY BAD BIKE ACCIDENT I HAD ON MY WAY HOME. I HADN’T WORN THEM SINCE FOR LIKE A YEAR AND A HALF; I THOUGHT THAT MAYBE SOMETHING BAD WOULD HAPPEN WITH THEM. BUT LAST YEAR, I FINALLY CLEANED UP THE BLOOD AND STARTED WEARING THEM AGAIN.”

“back in the days, buying more than one pair wasn’t really a trend, so you would want to keep your shoes clean. with newspaper bunched into the shoe to help maintain its shape, you would use diluted tide with a toothbrush and gently brush the dirt off. once the dirt removed, a towel was used to take in any excess soap and water before soaking into the material. some would just use windex and javex to accomplish this task, however these harsher substances are not rec-ommended since they can also wash off some of the shoe’s color and cause some parts to yellow quicker than usual. nowadays, the pro-cess is about the same. the ‘magic eraser’ works quite well on midsoles, while ‘tide to go’ on material parts produces nice results. shoelaces are washed separately and can be soaked in javex to keep them white. all sorts of tricks can be picked up along the way however, for those who’d rather bypass the various products, the jason markk kit is the ultimate and most recom-mended ‘all in one’ kit. developed by a guy who obviously loves his sneakers, this wonder solution is 100% natural and has sneakerheads swearing by it.”

jason, originally from winnipeg, is an artist with a ba in fine arts. after a

soul-searching period of be-coming disillusioned with the art world and considering a career change from artist to monk, living in japan and traveling all around, jason wound up in montreal. he de-cided to give his art anoth-er go, this time with his own better understanding of what art is: communication.

he and fellow artist (and former schoolmate) tim barnard started en masse last year. to do something differ-ent from the typical art show, they decided to get as much paper or canvas as they could to cover the gallery walls, and invite other artists to come in and participate in the large-scale mural. the two of them had worked in black and white for years, so they set that as a criterion to level the playing field. they called it en Masse.

it’s really about communi-cating in collaboration with others. “it’s a dialogue--free-form and spontaneous like jazz,” jason explains. “it also gives artists the opportuni-ty to come out and interact with the public in a very dif-ferent way than we normally do.” conversely, the en masse events give the public the op-portunity to come and meet these artists and broaden their perspectives on art and their sense of community.

while in some ways it may seem like one, it’s actual-ly not a collective, in that it’s not defined solely through a set group of artists. it’s open. jason and current co-direc-tor rupert bottenberg really encourage interested people to get involved, as the suc-cess of the project hinges on new artists and new ideas. this coming year brings a lot of big plans for en masse, includ-ing expanding to new cities and branching into multime-dia territory. an ultimate goal is for it to become a true plat-form for artists - something to add to their portfolio, a forum for meeting new artists and exchanging knowledge, and a way of expanding their ar-tistic horizons.Upon asking jason if he feels better about the art world now, after his previous disen-chantment, he responded, “totally. but it had to come from a place of understand-ing that art is communica-tion. that simple… it freed me up to be able to com-municate what i wanted. it didn’t matter what it was. it’s as simple as the dialogue you and i are having right now. it doesn’t matter. you dream it and you make it, you take re-sponsibility for it and you show it.”

Black Milk is by no means a newcomer to the scene. if you’re not already aware of whom he is, it won’t be long before you can’t get enough. from popping up in 2002 on a slum village compilation, to 2008 solo album release tronic, BM has remained consistently dope. over the years he worked on singles and albums with the likes of Jay Dee, primo, and phat kat, to name a few. as a producer BM chops samples on his mpc with a super vibey attitude, and is brutal-ly capable of bringing the underground into the clubs. as an mc Black Milk is slick like Jay Z and melts into his own beats terribly smooth-ly, like butter on toast. put those together with live drums and keyboard for a solid live show, “which is very important!” notes BM.

i recently had the pleasure of talking with BM on the subject of life and death, since 2009 brought the sudden death of slum village rapper Baatin, who BM credits as his mentor and inspirer, and only weeks later more tragic news as hexMurda, black’s manager, fell into a coma. that combined with deaths in his family was making 2009 look bleak but BM didn’t dwell over these tragedies: “Basically i used emo-tions as inspiration to keep my head above the water, continuing on with even more drive to create my next album.” his thoughts on life and death? “i believe everyone comes into the world with a purpose, something to offer the world. Life is about finding that ‘something’ and exploiting it to the best of your capabilities. once you think you have discovered what you were put on this planet for, you need to Master it and expose it for all to see. the journey is the joy of life!” positive food for thought!

Album of the year, was released on september 14th 2010. like the mythological phoenix, black milk is on the rise for further greatness and achievement, quickly becoming a staple in our hip-hop diets.

the morning surf check showed a golden lit frame and the boys zinked up frantically before running down and paddling out. swimming in crystal clear water, hovering over the shallow reef, i pointed my camera towards the peak where the crew was surfing waves we were all dreaming of at home just days prior, while watching modern collective for the 4th time before trudging into the cold wearing 6ml wet suits. it was like a dream come true. set after set, barrel after barrel, the waves were per-fect. five hours later we gathered in one of our ac bungalows and sipped on another large bintang beer, watching the clips from the days work. the food and the lifestyle is tops in indo, drinking large binnys, eating three hefty meals a day, with nothing else to care about besides eating, surfing, and sleeping. after two weeks the swell started to drop, and the horrendous journey back to kuta was about to begin.

the bus ride over to sumbawa was stressful to say the least, and with all flights in the area cancelled, the canadians had to pile back into another mini-van-bus to start the trek back to the city. the first leg our journey was a short hour or so to the bus station, where we were met by street venders attempting to sell us any-thing they could dig up, before hopping on the 9-hour bus ride across to the ferry termi-nal. crammed in the back, sitting beside chick-en cages and bags of rice, all quickly dosed themselves with valiums, and were out for the count. we arrived at the ferry terminal realiz-ing we hadn’t seen much in the way of women since we left to sumbawa.

after an entire day of traveling, we checked into our rooms and put on our cleanest attire before heading to the ‘all you can drink’ beer gardens. eight beers later, the clock turned to twelve and the vip lounge opened up on the top floor. with cheap drinks and five floors of the best dance parties ever, it was hard not to go out every night in bali when our rooms were located in the middle of it all! screams

emanated from the locals as we passed by: “massage yes?”, “transport yes?”, “mushroom yes?” we denied all the venders as we staggered our way home just mo-ments before sunrise.

the last week of the trip consist-ed of lots of hung-over scooter missions to the surrounding surf lo-cations. everyday was a new ad-venture, searching for bigger and better waves. traveling through indonesia forced all of us to ponder the question: does a traveling surf-er’s life get any better than spend-ing time in indonesia?

“... swimming in crystal clear water, hovering over the shallow reef, i pointed my camera towards the peak where the crew was sUrfing waves we were all dreaming of at home jUst days prior...”

from big (and i mean big) lines, you will never be good enough to ride to endless powder fields of bottomless blower snow, alaska truly has something for everyone man (or woman) enough to stand up to the challenge. now for me and all my friends, it was never a question of if we were going to go up to ak, only when and how. i had always promised myself i would wait for the right opportunity to come along to head up there, lest i blow my one big chance. this last spring, tailgate alaska, the raddest non-event you will ever hear about, provided just such a chance.

organized by snowboard legends nick perata and mark sullivan, tailgate is a loosely orga-nized chance to camp out for two weeks on top of the thompson pass, 30 miles outside the town of valdez, with an eclectic mix of pro shreds, die-hards and just plain kooks. and driving an rv up from whistler, bc, with three good friends was the perfect way to set the mood for things to come. on board with me were montreal native josh lapkovsky, bc-bred shredder extraordinaire dave short and vera janssen, who hails from germany but has been living in the mountains of california and bc for the past decade.

oh yeah and did i mention that, as part of tailgate, the infamous king of the hill freeride contest, on hiatus for the past ten years, was brought back? just one more reason for leg-ends of shred to fly in from around the world to hang out in the chugach mountains and kill it. and kill it we did. for twelve straight days we accessed some of the most incredible ter-rain imaginable on our snowmobiles, shredding lines dreams are made out of. hanging out with old friends and many many new ones, ba-sically having what can only be described as the time of our lives. i don’t know about you but, to me, it just doesn’t get better than par-tying around a campfire into the night, literally waking up in the alpine. a quick hop skip and a jump and we were on top of countless lines, both mellow and gnarly. there wasn’t a day we didn’t run our sleds, and there wasn’t a day any of us didn’t ride multiple lines that would make you cry. it was that good.

a huge part of 1990’s snowboarding, the king of the hill contest is as much about the party and atmosphere as it is about the shredding. don’t get me wrong, the shredding is huge and couldn’t have been more world-class (travis rice won with the most insane 3 runs ever, in-cluding a monster backside 7 in the middle of a huge line) but the real story here is the whole vibe surrounding the event. when some-one like myself, a shred-geek at best, can sit down and shoot the shit with the likes of mike basich, shawn farmer and terry-fricken-kidwell, you know something special is in the air (if you snowboard and don’t know who those guys are then i don’t wanna be friends with you anymore). drinking and story-telling around the campfire, ping-pong tournaments in the yurt and too many free kegs of delicious alaska brewing company beer to count, tailgate is the kind of event you feel truly blessed to be at.
