Message from the Minister for Tourism Industry Development

Welcome to the Crocodile Trophy - the world’s oldest and most iconic mountain bike race in the heart of Tropical North Queensland. It’s wonderful to be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of this event which welcomes national and international competi-tors. This race offers riders a unique Queensland experience through rainforest trails and bushland, where no two days are the same. Regional events like this play an important role in driving visitors to the region which support local jobs. The Queensland Government is proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland. Congratulations to the event organisers and all those involved in delivering the event. I encourage visitors to explore Tropical North Queensland while here and come away with some great memories.

Stage 1 is a 80 km marathon and offers 2100 vm of climbing – as it has become tradition, this year’s race will start with a neutral ride out of Cairns. The entire Crocodile Trophy peloton will start the Anniversary edition on the Esplanade in the heart of the City to cheers of spectators from all over the world with a neutral ride on the iconic Lake Morris Road.

After the official start it will be an 8.4 km bitumen climb, averaging 6 % gradient through lush rainforest be-fore taking a breather on the rolling hills to the Copperlode Dam, Cairns’ main water supply. After crossing the Copperlode Dam Wall the “real race starts”, so many former Croc racers have told us. The pace incre-ases at the front, even though this is where steep dirt climbs commence for about 5 km through beautiful and dense rainforest vegetation with sections of up to 35 % gradient. By now you’ll be already fully immersed into “Croc-Trophy-country” – rolling hills with some fun fast dirt descents and a couple of creek crossings are on the menu before we enter the Davies Creek Mountain Bike Park:

20 km of relatively flat and fun, fast flowing purpose built single trail await! Exiting the MTB Park you’re on your first home stretch, traveling along the water channel to the Finish at Ringers Rest, your home for the two nights.

For the first time the Crocodile Tro-phy will stop at this beautiful bush-land property. Ringers Rest is nestled in the Mareeba valley of the Cairns Highlands. It is surrounded by open woodlands and the rocky remains of ancient volcanic activity. Here you be able to recover in the so typical Australian bush setting. Surrounding our camp are relics from the past, old cattle yards, a traditional bush kitchen, native wildlife, farm animals and a campfire to relax by, all crea-ting an authentic portrayal of life in the Australian bush and a place to recover from a day in the saddle. As the sun sets and illuminates the eve-ning sky with a vast array of colours and patterns settle down at the din-ner table and refuel your body with nutritious and delicious food from the region and enjoy a chat with your fellow Croc mates.

STAGE 5Wondecla – Skybury Coffee

WED 16.10.2019

STAGE

5

STAGE 05 WONDECLA - SKYBURY 120 KM / 1600 VM

DESCRIPTION

Sure it’s the longest stage yet, but you’ve got the hardest ones out of the way. If you haven’t been looking after nutrition, hyd-ration and recovery you will not enjoy this day. If you are feeling rough, find the time for a proper warm up. It will help!Rolling out of Wondecla you are heading west and into quite dry country. The climb up Mt Misery is long, and on tired legs it delivers on the name. But otherwise it’s nothing like some of the climbs on previous days. The descent towards Irvinebank is mostly fast, with a few opportunities to overcook corners if you’re tired.

• This is more of the traditional long outback stages.• Stage 5 starts out heading west with long dry rolling dirt

roads.• After 20 kilometres you turn right and commence the 10 km

climb of Mt Misery.• After briefly taking in some picturesque views you descend

5-6 km along a beautiful winding non technical dirt road arri-ving at the small Historic Tin Mining Township of Irvinebank.

• Then its back on the wide dry dirt roads that make their way through true outback cattle country.

• Around 10 km further down the road the road turns to track, rough, sandy and rocky in parts with some steep pitchy climbs. The next 20-30 km are very tough on body and bike. This section has a history of destroying tyres and if your are not cautious has claimed a collarbone or two. Faster is not necessarily better here.

• The last 50 kilometres will have you travelling predominately along smooth fast Sunwater Channel tracks that cut through beautiful farming lands and eventually pops out at the Sky-bury Coffee Plantation home for nights 5 & 6.

STAGE 6Skybury - Skybury

THU 17.10.2019

STAGE

6STAGE 06 SKYBURY - SKYBURY 125 KM / 1200 VM

DESCRIPTION

What we said earlier about variety? Well now you’re noticing it. Just days ago you were racing through World Heritage listed rainforest, and now you’ll be racing through terrain that wouldn’t be out of place in a Mad Max movie.Don’t let the profile fool you, there’s stuff all climbing compared to earlier this week. The downside of that is if you haven’t prepared well, each rise will feel like a huge mountain to conquer. But you’re in a sta-ge race. Don’t stop moving. Always keep moving forward, drinking and eating. This too shall pass. This is a lolly pop loop. You head out to a loop and come back the same way. That loop you do starts on dirt roads and some double track, but ends up on cattle-worn singletrack. There’s plenty of stuff to reach out and grab a derailleur or handlebar, and natural gullies to pump your bike through or pop off to change lines. If you’re feeling good it’s a lot of fun and a good place to make a move on your rivals. Overall the day is pretty flat and the 125 km should tick by pretty fast. The finish is quick, but you might have some head wind. Find a group, make a pact. And know if it’s worth attacking them or staying together to the line.

• Stage 6 continues on the long dry outback theme travelling along some long dry dirt roads and through cattle stations.

• This stage tackles kilometres of rolling corrugated and sandy roads transversing through the Mt Mulligan and Tryconnell Mine areas.

• This stage also contains extended sections of cattle worn single track to split up the small bunches that tend to form on this stage.

• The last 20k is the same as the first but in the opposite direction and can be subject to strong head winds.

• The longest in kilometres but due to the minimal elevation and pre-dominately fast dirt roads generally has a higher average speed than the others.

STAGE 7Skybury - Hartley‘s Croc Adventure

FRI 18.10.2019

STAGE

7

STAGE 07 SKYBURY - HARTLEY‘S CROCODILE ADVENTURE - 84 KM / 800 VM

So, day seven. You have been racing for a week and you’ll be happy to see a day with less than 1000m of climbing. The thing is, once you’ve got out of Skybury (which will be pretty fast and dusty), when you cross the highway you still have the range to go through. But in a nice change from the previous days, you’re back in the rainforest! The trails can be wet but it’s not likely at this time of year, and with a good rock base laid over problem areas, the only thing slowing you down will be fatigue. Be prepared for some punctures on large rocks used to reinforce some dirt tracks, they can be sharp. The singletrack before the descent is mostly motorbike built, with long swooping corners and some ruts in sections. This part of the forest is pretty open – and a lot of fun!

With the finish at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventure, here’s your chance for your photo holding a crocodile.

• For the first time in the history of our event, we will get up and close with real crocodiles and we’d like to thank Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures for hosting the stage fi-nish and accommodating our Croc camp for the night!

• After two long dry and dusty stages, the 7th stage races through a number of fast small station and gravel roads before turning into some picturesque single track that enters the pine plantation and along beauti-ful rainforest roads.

• The final 10 km is on bitumen and includes a steep fast bitumen decent with glimpses of the ocean to the Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures finish line.

STAGE 8Hartley‘s Croc Adventure- Port Douglas

Sat 19.10.2019

STAGE

8

STAGE 08 - HARTLEY‘S CROC ADVENTURE - PORT DOUGLAS - 34 KM / 900 VM

To commemorate this great man, from now on the final stage of the Crocodile Trophy will always be named the „Greg Parr Stage“. The final stage has been a time trial since 2014, and this year the stage is dedicated to Greg Parr, who lost his battle with cancer last year. Greg had been involved with the Croc for years, and participated numerous times with his wife. The route climbs back up almost 5 km of Quaid road befo-re turning into the Twin Bridges singletrack. It’s named for a couple of pretty sketchy log bridges, but in general the trail is an absolute blast to ride! The Bump Track awaits, which could be called the Pump Track for the top section, with easy water-bars and flow groomed by plenty of wheels on a trail that cuts through the dense rainforest. But when it finally tips down, you drop 400 m pretty quickly. Don’t get caught out!The bottom isn’t the finish, as you ride a country road to the back of the canefields, under the road through a drainage tun-nel (where a 3 m saltwater Croc was found once) and through the back of Port Douglas. But you’re not done yet! Find the hard send and power up Four Mile Beach to the finish line.

• After spending the night at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures Adventure with the crocs and many other native Australian animals, the final stage is a short but tough 34 km Time Trial.

• The start is the climb back up Quaid Road, a pinchy 4.6 km before re-entering the thick rainforest and the beautiful sing-le trails of the Twin Bridges track.

• The final stretch is raced on the infamous ‘Bump Track’ whe-re the riders will descend over 400 vm in just 1 km before stopping the clock for the 8th stage of the 25th edition.
