WHAT IS CREWEL EMBROIDERY?

• ‘Crewel’, in terms of embroidery, is particularly used in order to refer to the decorative form of embroidery in which wool is used to embroider stitches and to follow the outline of a design which is applied to a fabric. Although wool is the fabric most commonly used for the embroidering of such designs, there are a large number of fabrics which can be used for the same purpose.

• The technique of Crewel Embroidery is supposed to be at least a thousand years old, its most famous appearance being the production of the internationally famous Bayeux Tapestry produced to commemorate the famous victory of William Duke of Normandy (later known as the Conqueror) over Harold II of Wessex in 1066.

CREWEL EMBROIDERY NOWADAYS

• In subsequent centuries, however, the technique has increased in popularity and had its ‘heyday’ in the seventeenth century with the production of ‘Jacobean Embroidery’ and also the tapestries of the Quaker movement. However, this does not mean that Crewel Embroidery is not popular nowadays.

• In the twenty-first century, Crewel Embroidered Fabric boasting a Jacobean style of design (typically displaying highly ornate representations of animals and plants and flowers) is exceedingly popular.

• Whereas in the past Crewel Embroidery was used in the creation of elaborate and expensive bed hangings and curtains, nowadays it is most often used in the decoration of cushions, clothing, wall hangings and curtains. Crewel Curtain Fabric, in particular, can be used to add a certain old fashioned and traditional feel to the overall aesthetic of a room.

TYPES OF CREWEL EMBROIDERY

• The materials typically used in the production of Crewel Curtain Fabric are velvet, cotton and organza. However, the most commonly used fabric for this style of embroidery and for this purpose is linen. In the seventeenth century, for instance, linen (or a linen and cotton twill) was the most common base material on which ‘Jacobean Embroidery’ was sewn for wall, bed and curtain hangings.

• In recent years, several other items have also been produced using Crewel Embroidered Fabric so that Jacobean Embroidery can be enjoyed by homeowners who are not bold enough to purchase Crewel Curtains. Recent additions to the ever growing list of Crewel Home Furnishings are such items as handbags, lamp shades, and rugs (which are produced in a Tambour Work technique).
