Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) was started 113 years ago by a group of Straits Chinese men who wanted to address the lack of education for Chinese girls. Since then, the school has overcome many challenges to provide good educational opportunities for girls and remains committed to delivering a holistic curriculum that prepares our girls to be world-ready leaders.

SCGS is privileged to receive the support of a group of artists and art enthusiasts who have contributed their expertise and art pieces to the “Creative Expression” project to help raise funds for a new indoor sports hall, additional performing arts facilities, science laboratories, classrooms, sports facilities and to retrofit existing facilities.

This project provides a platform to showcase our pupils’ artworks and promote an appreciation of and passion for visual arts. It kicked-off with a school-wide Art Competition in April 2012. Selected and winning submissions by the pupils will be put up for sale at the Art Exhibition together with the works of professional artists such as Mr Lim Tze Peng, Mr Lim Kang Kee and Mr Goh Beng Kwan, Dr Earl Lu and our Alumni, Mrs Jennifer Wong-Liao.

Do come and appreciate the collection of fine art. Your support will be an encouragement to our young budding artists.

Lim Tze Peng (b. 28 September 1921, Singapore - present), artist, winner of the Cultural Medallion in 2003, first established his art practice in the early 1950s with a series of oil paintings on Chinese landscapes. He is best known for the significant number of Chinese ink drawings and paintings of Chinatown and the Singapore River he produced during the early 1980s when urban redevelopment focused on these two areas. Having a solid foundation in Chinese philosophy, art and culture, Lim also practised Chinese calligraphy, especially in the 1990s. In 2009, Lim Tze Peng had his solo exhibition in the prestigious Beijing and Shanghai Art Museum.

Even though Lim was born and educated in Singapore, his diligent studies and daily dedication to practising his craft enabled him to excel in the Chinese ink tradition. His new ink works are deeply rooted in tradition, yet they have a palpably contemporary feel, and can be enjoyed by those who are schooled in other traditions.

Lim shows that Singapore’s multi-cultural environment may provide a context in which artists can respond to a variety of influences without being rapped in a defensive form of traditionalism or a superficial form of cosmopolitanism.

Lim’s creative impulses for his new works is clear, where previously it was “I see and I paint, now it’s I reflect and I paint". His latest series of calligraphic works reveal a new level of artistic maturity - their raw energy reflect an aggressive swiftness and decisive ferocity, injecting the calligraphy with an invigorating tension.

The vibrant life of a village scene is depicted through Lim Tze Peng’s skillful hands and careful observations. Each stroke, confident and free, Mr. Lim adds the dashes of colours, allowing the viewers to feel the livelihood of the village life.

Lim Kang KeeMr Lim Kang Kee was born in 1943. He grew up in a small village and had been interested in art since young. On the encouragement of a cousin, he entered an art school at the age of 18 and studied for a number of years under the late Mr Liu Kang, a master artist. His works were featured in innumerable art exhibitions in Singapore and overseas since 1967. Besides holding four solo exhibitions in 1973, 1981, 1986 and 1997, Mr Lim’s works were published in “Singapore Artist Directory”, “Singapore artist Speak2” and “Singapore. Places. Poems. Paintings”. In 1995, he received the People’s Association Long Service Award (25 years) for his service as a Continuing Education Activity Instructor. Fondness for his village background is apparent in his paintings, especially his water-colours where he shows tremendous feel for colors and fluidity in his strokes. His love of country side images is reflected in sampans, trees and rivers. His recent works have a strong element of impressionism and due to his maturity in art practice, his representation of subject matter has simplified.

Dr Earl Lu Ming-Teh (1925 – 2005) was considered one of Singapore's most prominent art patrons and philanthropists. A medical surgeon by profession, he was a keen art collector and served on several institutional boards to help promote visual arts and art education in Singapore. Most of his art collections have been given to various institutions, including the National University of Singapore, Singapore Art Museum and the Earl Lu Gallery at the La-Salle SIA College of the Arts. An artist in his own right, he is known for his paintings of roses. Throughout his life, Lu did not merely exhibit and sell his paintings to private collectors, he organised charity art exhibitions, helping to raise funds for various medical causes. His rose paintings can be found hanging on the walls of several hospitals. In recognition of his many contributions, he was awarded the Public Service Star Award by the President of Singapore.

Jennifer Wong-Liao, an old girl of SCGS, began her creative journey as an artist in 2004 at the Singapore Island Country Club, where she studied painting with Mr Tan Khim Ser, President of Life Art Society.

Her contemporary paintings are characterised by a delightful combination of colour and movement, expressing an opportunity to reflect on who and where we are, and the reality of it. Jennifer expresses her art in acrylic, playing with colours and light to create highly textured effects.

A self taught artist, Jennifer focuses on painting and works primarily related to the nature, people and places surrounding her. She has developed an exploration of form and texture that allow for more spontaneity in creating great images.

Art is a medium of expression and exploration to her. Jennifer has described her way of beginning a painting as “making a start somewhere and then seeing what happens through the sustained act of painting.” Rarely pre-determined, her paintings culminate in works that trace the process of discovery itself.

Born in 1980 in Shenyang city in China, Jinchao graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication from Shenyang University. He subsequently moved to Singapore to complete a Master of Arts in Fine Art, undertaking courses in jewellery and then printmaking. Jinchao’s work deals with the contradiction of human responses. It looks at the intangible and unexplained aspects of human conditions. Each of his drawings seems to tell a story that flows illogically. According to Jinchao, the protagonist in his drawings is The Absurd of Theatre who speaks to his unknown audience set in surrealistic and nonsensical scenes.
