Overview of Learning and Development Resources

“Only the educated are free”[Epictetus]

This booklet provides an overview of the learning and development resources that are available free to NHS organisations, to assist you to embed sustainability. They have been developed by the NHS Sustainable Development Unit (SDU), in collaboration with a number of healthcare organisations to ensure that they meet the needs of the service.

For each resource there is a summary:

• What is it?• How is it delivered?• How can I get it?

Taking a sustainable approach will save money and deliver higher quality health services. The SDU was created to help the NHS become a leading low carbon, sustainable organisation. The support and participation of NHS staff is critical if this is to be achieved. It is therefore vital that those responsible for staff learning and development have access to quality resources, which have been developed by subject matter experts and tested in the service. We hope that the free materials outlined in this booklet will be helpful to your organisation.

Sustainability is not a new agenda – it is common sense. For this reason, it is important it is integrated into the everyday activities of the service in a way that helps us do our jobs better. The principles of sustainable development promote a joined-up way of structuring and delivering your business.

It is only through the training and development of our staff that we can deliver a sustainable health system and it is only by delivering a sustainable health system that we can continue to provide care that is capable of meeting the challenges of the 21st Century.

• It helps your organisation to meet the carbon reduction targets which are required by law.

• Reducing carbon will save your organisation money.

• It will help your organisation to deliver on your Board’s Sustainable Development Management Plan (SDMP).

• Promotes staff health & well-being.

• It will help staff to understand why delivering more streamlined, efficient and cost effective services is necessary.

• Promotes partnership working across the health economy.

• Provides a common ground where staff, mangers, clinicians, unions and organisations can work together.

• And, importantly for all of us… It improves health!

Why have these resource been made available?

Summary of Development Resources

Delivery Method:

• 3 Hour face to face session with Board

• Presentation and various facilitated activities

Cost: FREE

The SDU commissioned a proof of concept project to identify the skills that boards needed to embed the principles of sustainability into their business plans. The conclusions and resources should provide a strong evidence base for successfully integrating sustainability into your board development activities.

From this proof of concept, four resources were developed:

• Board Leadership for Sustainability Summary Report Identifies why and how boards can embed the principles of sustainability into the business planning process.

• Facilitator’s Guide for running a Board sustainability workshop AND Presentation slides – This resource pack is available to support individuals to facilitate board development sessions and is available on the SDU website.

• Board Leadership for Sustainability Full Report This outlines in greater detail the findings of the pilot programme and makes recommendations for how sustainability should be integrated into board development programmes at a sub-national level.

Delivery Method:

• Face to face session with those responsible for developing strategy

• Various facilitated activities

The Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) developed a futures thinking document called Fit for the Future.

Published in September 2009 and co-produced with the sustainable development charity, Forum for the Future it states that, “a low carbon NHS is a more efficient NHS”. Fit for the Future recommends five key steps to creating a sustainable and resilient healthcare system, ready for whatever the future may hold. The report details a set of scenarios which managers and clinicians can use to test strategy.

Fit for the Future consists of 3 key resources:

• Fit for the Future: Scenarios for low-carbon healthcare 2030 Fit for the Future is based on guidance from health sector experts. It is designed to assist NHS leaders, managers and staff to produce longer term, more robust strategic plans. It is a tool to help you generate stimulating conversations and productive ideas.

• Scenario Planning Facilitation Pack This resource pack is designed to help NHS leaders think how they can build sustainability into their long term strategic plans. It allows them to consider the robustness of those plans in a 2030 setting and contains a facilitator’s handbook with sessions for various purposes, laminates that summarise the scenarios and a DVD which contains a dramatisation of the scenarios.

• Pockets of the Future in the PresentThis resource contains real stories from the media that point the way towards what healthcare might be like in the future. From the seeds of thought that are sewn now, the future will emerge. This resource is designed to support facilitators of futures thinking sessions when using the Fit for the Future Scenarios

Connecting Sustainability, the NHS & Climate Change

Climate change, sustainability, and

healthAwareness and Advocacy

Training

Delivery Method:

• Not applicable – The research is designed to support the development of other awareness programmes or events

This bank of slides is a record of an educational resource developed by the NHS SDU with support from the Department of Health.

It was used as part of a research project with UK public health registrars between February and April, 2010. The objective of the research was to build the research base on how to most effectively help health professionals engage with the important and urgent issue of health, sustainability and the NHS.

The slide set was last updated on 30 June, 2010. Sustainability in healthcare is a very fast-moving field, and therefore resources such as these become quickly outdated and superseded. Therefore the slide-set should not be used as a stand alone resource. Instead, we would suggest that you use this historical record to help shape whatever awareness programme or event you are developing. Most of these slides are being continually updated since this research was done. This is because new research, new legislation and new perspectives are constantly emerging. We would therefore urge you to use this slide set only to help shape your thinking. The SDU would be very happy to help you with specific resources (material, people, organisations), and in particular to help the whole health and sustainability community share knowledge about how to raise awareness and motivate action.

Where can I access the materials?

The resource can be requested from the SDU by e-mailing [email protected]

The Productive Series

Sustainable Action Planning (SAP) Resource Pack for Clinical Teams

The Productive Series - The Productive Series supports NHS teams to redesign and streamline the way they manage and work. This helps to achieve significant and lasting improvements – mainly in the extra time that they give to patients, as well as improving the quality of care delivered whilst reducing costs.

The Productive Series has adopted efficiency techniques previously used in car manufacturing and safety techniques learned in the aviation industry. By working with NHS teams the NHS Institute have adapted them for the NHS in a practical and innovative way

SAP is a programme that has been produced by Campaign for Greener Healthcare to support clinical teams in taking action on sustainability. Structured around two facilitated workshops, SAP helps front-line staff to learn about sustainable healthcare, focus in on their priorities and put together a green action plan. The action plan can then be included in the team’s routine management processes, becoming the framework for ongoing sustainability improvements.

Delivery Method:

• Face to face session in the form of two facilitated workshops• Ongoing resources to support the application of LEAN

principles

Leadership for Sustainability Course (NHS) – The SDU is working with the internationally renowned Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership (CPSL) to develop a course specifically designed for the health service.

The 2 day course is due to be ready in early 2011.

If you are unable to wait until then, you may like to attend the current leadership seminars. For further details you can visit the CPSL website:

http://www.cpsl.cam.ac.uk/about_us/what_we_do.aspx

Further details of the NHS specific programme will be available on the SDU website (www.sdu.nhs.uk) in due course.

“Meeting our needs today without compromising the ability of others to

meet their needs tomorrow…”

Sustainability is one of those words where you understand what it means, but it is actually quite difficult to define. Notice that the quote above talks about ‘needs’. It does not talk about “the environment”, “being green” nor “saving the planet”. Sustainability is not about being ‘idealistic’ - it is about common sense – using resources sensibly so there are enough left for others in the world (today) and our children (tomorrow).

We need food, energy, space, homes, money, safety etc and our children, and their children and their children will need the same. Sustainability is how we ensure we achieve balance whether it is social, environmental and/or economic - to make sure we live within our means.

Every day you hear sustainability mentioned – in TV commercials, meetings, newspaper articles and major policy documents (like the NHS operating framework). This is because sustainability has entered the business consciousness as a serious and pressing issue. The risks posed to the health system by increasing demand, budgetary constraints, global resource uncertainty and a changing climate, means that organisations that fail to manage these risks through robust strategic plans will quickly become unfit for purpose. Those with the foresight to recognise this are positioning themselves to maximise the benefits (and offset the risks).

Many of the major companies in the world – for example, Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Sainsbury, BP, Shell, IBM, BMW etc – have started taking sustainability seriously and are equipping their staff with the skills, knowledge and competence to operate more sustainably. This is not because they are idealistic but because it makes sound business sense in the real world.

The health service needs to be resilient and capable of delivering quality care both today and tomorrow.

FYI - Sustainability in a nutshell

Sustainability is about striking a balance:

• Sustainability is about striking the right balance between three key areas: ‘Economic Sustainability’, ‘Social Sustainability’ and ‘Environmental Sustainability’. This is illustrated by the ‘sweet spot’ in the middle of the diagram.

• We often talk about carbon reduction and environmental sustainability – but sustainability for the NHS is much broader than this – it is about how we deliver care, how we create a healthier happier population, how we ensure we can afford to continue to deliver care in the future etc.

Sustainability – Getting the balance right

Why is sustainability a strategic business issue?

What is sustainability?
