A stAge neAr you …

Valdy said the pain came on just last Friday, between a gig in Lloyd-minster and Camrose. “I started a course in anti-biotics, but by Tuesday morning I was in the chair (in Cran-brook) having it pulled out. Dr. Dave Burwash was very good.”

That the legendary Canadian folksinger can come down with the toothache in Cam-rose and have it extract-ed in Cranbrook is testi-ment to his constant roadwork — 200 shows a year in towns big and small across Canada.

That’s the life of a Canadian musician, even for someone with the stature of Valdy.

We do have to be on the road to be able to reach out to people who want to hear us. They won’t come to us, so we have to go to them. It’s a vast country, so there’s lots of miles involved in it. Travelling is half of our life. The music probably takes up about three hours a day, trav-elling’s up to six hours a day.”

Valdy (aka Paul Valdemar-Horsdal) , came to prominence in the 1970s as one of Can-ada’s top singer-song-writers along with Gor-don Lightfoot. The writ-er of such hits as “Rock and Roll Song,” “Yes I Can,” Peter and Lou” and “Sonny’s Dream” spoke to the Townsman about his concert part-ner Ken Hamm, the re-cent election, and where he gets his inspi-ration.

He and finger-pick-ing blues virtuoso Ken Hamm have been friends for years. “He’s on the road a great — I was looking at his web-site, he’s been working very hard this month.

“He’s on his way to Lethbridge, then to Fernie, then coming in with me at the Key City Theatre on the 27th. He’s a great player — a traditionalist, but he’s put his own stamp on the tradition of the blues — wonderful to hear.”

Valdy’s latest album, a collaboration with Country singer Fjell-gaard, is about to be re-leased, but probably not in time for the Cran-brook show.

“It’s being manufac-

Valdy returns to scene of his tooth-pulling

tured in the Great To-ronto Area as we speak,” Valdy said. “It’s getting pressed today. I don’t think they’ll be ready for Cranbrook. I fly back Monday, and if they’re ready I’ll bring some with me.”

As for the election:“I’m really pleased

with it. I’m disappoint-ed that there’s a majori-ty — I would have liked to see a minority gov-ernment, especially for Trudeau’s first term. But he’s got good people around him so I hope he does okay.”

A prolific writer of songs, Valdy serves as a musical voice in Cana-da. in which we can see ourselves, and in some ways our own reactions.

“Inspiration comes, I think, from things that come across my bow, and something that piques my interest and is worthy of being com-mented on. There’s not a lot of Stompin’ Tom Connors music around anymore, so I wrote him a tribute song. And a woman on Saltspring had an exhibition of all the pictures she’d taken of people for 30 years — she asked me to play for the opening, so I wrote a song called ‘Faces’ for her.

“Things like that, that I think are worthy of being represented or discussed or exposed, that’s generally what I

choose to write about. On occasion, some-thing flippant or fun. But mostly something affirmative of the social situation.”

What kind of show can Cranbrook expect? Valdy answers that while he doesn’t know the exact format of the upcoming show yet, he knows what kind of show he’d like to have.

“I would very much like to play with Ken — I don’t know if he’d like to play some guitar with me or not — but I’d like to see us do a ‘songwrit-ers in the round,’ where we go back and forth, and then have individu-al slots where we can presents ourselves as well, and then have a situation where we can play together.

“I also have a bass along with me — I’d like to play a little bottom end for Ken. He’s got a great thumb on his left hand, so he keeps the bottom end going pretty well. But to keep some-thing tasty going under-neath that would be nice too.

“The whole area is picturesque. You live in as much of a paradise as we do on the West Coast.”

Valdy and Ken Hamm, with guest Con-nor Foote of Cranbrook, take the stage at the Key City Theatre on Tues-day, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m.

Local gamers got together and raised over $4,320.60 for the Alberta Children’s Hospital at the second annual Extra Life Game Day last weekend at the Eagles Hall. The event, which is a fundraiser organized by Dave Miller and friends, is in support of the Alberta Children’s Hospital, which treated his son many years ago. Gamers had the option of playing any kind of console system to board games to card games and more over the 12-hour event, which featured raffles and door prizes donated locally and abroad.

Arne PetryshenCranbrook city

council approved ap-plying for a $400,000 loan to replace its age-ing water tender truck.

Fire and Emergency Services’ 1993 Interna-

tional 4900 water tender has been in service for 22 years. City staff noted the insurance industry only recognizes fire ap-paratus for 20 years, so it no longer meets the in-surance industry water

supply requirements. The water tender is

required to provide fire protection to locations in the service area that do not have a fire hy-drant, such as nearly all of Area C.

Council authorized city staff to proceed with the equipment fi-nancing application for a five-year term agree-ment for $400,000 and had no issues on that end, though councillors

had questions regard-ing the old tender.

Coun. Tom Shypitka asked about whether there was any resale value of the old equip-ment, a subject he noted was brought up before.

CAO Wayne Staudt said it was not likely.

“With the existing old tender, I’m not sure whether there will be a water tanker, but if there is we certainly will pur-sue that,” Staudt said. “In the past we have do-nated some old fire equipment to some of our neighbouring com-munities, so if that op-portunity comes up, that’s a council deci-sion.”

He said city staff would bring the choice to donate the equip-ment back to council if council so choses.

“But there is very lit-tle uptake on this used equipment because it is

beyond the life expec-tancy that the insurance association will recog-nize and that put your coverage in jeopardy,” he said.

Coun. Ron Popoff said that while at the UBCM convention there was a forum called GovDeals.

“Sort of like govern-ment eBay,” Popoff said. “This might be an exact issue, CAO Staudt, where we may not have value for it, but you put this on the government eBay, there may be someone elsewhere in Canada that’s interested and will bid on it.”

Popoff thought the city might even make revenue on it. He said he would share the in-formation on GovDeals with city staff and coun-cil.

The successful bid for the new water ten-der came in at just under $394,000 includ-

ing PST. Additional hose will also be purchased and the report said it will be purchased with-in the $400,000 budget.

City staff anticipated it will arrange a loan with the Municipal Fi-nance Authority of BC in December 2015 with debt servicing begin-ning in 2016.

The annual principal and interest payment over the five-year term of the loan is estimated to be $84,800 and the city estimates the im-pact to a residential tax-payer will be an in-crease to the general municipal tax levy of approximately $2 per $100,000 of assessed value.

Under the Cran-brook Rural Fire Protec-tion Agreement, the Re-gional District of East Kootenay will contrib-ute 20 per cent to the annual debt servicing costs.

City okays borrowing for water tender

To this end, a com-munity work day has been set for Sunday, October 25. “We’re ba-sically looking at some site clean up and com-pact the berms and the jumps. We’re looking for volunteers. Calling all cars!”

Buterman said volu-teers interested in help-ing out can show up to the park at about 9 a.m. Sunday. Everyone’s ad-vised to bring some gar-dening tools — rakes.

The group is also looking to organize some volunteer sup-

port throughout the coming week — going down to the park to put water on the lines — “because we’re not going to be able to work with the dirt unless it’s wet. We actually have a garden use from a neighbour’s home to use. We’re basically starting today (Thurs-day), going down there, doing a little site clean up, solidify these new bike lines they’ve built by watering them and tamping them down. They’ll be some shap-ing, so bring garden

Volunteers needed for bike park work beetools.”

Buterman said the support from the com-munity so far has been amazing.

SubmittedJennifer Roberts was

recently appointed Dis-trict Principal of Tech-nology & Transforma-tive Learning by the School District 5 (SD5) Board of Education.

According to Board chair, Frank Lento, the District has been up-grading the technology infrastructure of all schools in order to bet-ter serve students, and to provide teachers with the necessary tools to deliver the newly rede-signed curriculum that the government is roll-ing out over the next couple of years.

“While the rede-signed curriculum en-sures students still learn the basics, the purpose of the redesign is to en-sure that students are able to utilize their knowledge in a way that makes sense for the 21st century. With this grow-ing focus, it’s vital that our educators have the proper training and support to maximize student learning,” ex-plained Lento. “The District developed the District Principal of

Technology & Transfor-mative Learning posi-tion to ensure educators are well supported now and in the future as technology changes.”

Born in Edmonton, AB, Roberts received her Bachelor of Educa-tion from the University of Alberta. With twen-ty-one years of teaching experience, eighteen of which were in public education, Roberts has taught a variety of pro-grams including special education, alternate ed-ucation and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). She has also taught adult basic edu-cation and worked as a Young Parent Education Program (YPEP) in-structor for the College of the Rockies (COTR).

Lento says Roberts’ diverse educational ex-perience is vital to the role of supporting other educators. “There’s a big difference in how you approach teaching youth and teaching adults. Jennifer will be able to draw on her ex-perience doing both as she helps our educators translate technology into a meaningful learn-ing tool for students.”

Roberts was assigned this position on a tem-porary basis over the summer. She is thrilled to be given the opportu-nity to continue her work on a permanent basis. “I enjoy working collaboratively with oth-ers and am excited to be working with such a tal-ented –and varied—group of teachers, sup-port staff and adminis-trators,” said Roberts.

Roberts is married with one son. She is the membership director for the Kimberley Rota-ry Club, and she and her husband own a corpo-rate team building and entertainment compa-ny in Alberta called the Drum Café. Roberts also enjoys mountain biking, hockey, skiing and scuba diving.

Principal of Technology and Transformative Learning

In 1998 John Wood found himself hiking up 18,000 feet up the

Himalayas, navigating icy roads and donkey trails to the highest ele-vation he had ever climbed.

Taking a much needed respite from corporate America, Wood had booked him-self a 21-day hiking va-cation in Nepal. While the mountains were every bit as challenging as he had hoped, he hadn’t really prepared himself for the Nepal-ese people — whom Wood found to be the friendliest and warm-hearted people in the world.

Wood was about ten days into his trek when he met an elderly school official who offered to give him a tour of a school he was visiting in the village of Bahun-danda. Although it was a a few hours almost straight up in the oppo-site way of his hike, Wood agreed.

The school itself was

what Wood expected it to be, a rural building with dirt floors covered in sheet metal; it was also clearly over capaci-ty, bursting with 450 blue-uniformed Nepal-ese children. It was the library he had expected. It was the largest and most beautiful room in the entire school, but it had one glaring fault: the shelves were empty. The school’s library had no books.

Well that is not quite true. The library owned three books: ‘The Lone-ly Planet Guide to Mon-golia,’ ‘Finnegan’s Wake,’ and a Danielle Steele novel. Three of the most improbable and unsuitable books (which had been obvi-ously left behind by backpackers like Wood) for 450 elementary stu-dents to share.

Wood, who grew up in Seattle, was facing something he had never encountered before: lifelong illiteracy. Sadly, Nepal has the highest illiteracy rate on the

planet at 70 per cent. Remote conditions, rural poverty, and the need for child labor have all contributed to this unbelievably high rate.

Western apathy cer-tainly hasn’t helped. 100,000 tourists trek through Nepal each year. How many toured the school’s empty li-brary but thought noth-ing of it?

Wood thanked the students and staff and began to take leave of his hosts. The elderly school official told Wood to come back and see them if he is ever in

Nepal again. “Perhaps,” he said shaking Wood’s hand, “perhaps sir, you will someday come back with books”

Wood promised he would, although he could see the doubt in the elderly man’s eyes. Many had promised to send books; no one ever did.

But a full year later Wood showed up at the school again, dragging a yak behind him. The yak was necessary to pack in the crates of books Wood brought, all 3,000 of them.

And this was only the beginning.

Stateside, Wood didn’t work just for an corporation. He worked for Microsoft. In the 90s. As an executive with stock options, Wood had amassed a fairly large bank account. More than this, he had the contact information of dozens of wealthy ex-ecutives, no to mention his boss — Bill Gates. Could they help out with book donations?

The response was so overwhelming, that Wood quit Microsoft, and committed him-self to eradicating illit-eracy in Nepal. He called his effort Room to Read — a charitable organization dedicat-ed to building librar-ies and filling them with books. Not limit-ed to Nepal, Room to Read has grown to help the build literacy all over Asia and Afri-ca. As of this year, it has built 16,800 librar-ies, and has supplied 14 million books.

Besides supplying them, Wood has also penned a few books, including ‘Leaving Microsoft to Change the World,’ ‘Creating Room to Read: A Story of Hope in the Battle for Global Literacy,’ and the children’s book ‘Zak the Yak with Book on His Back.’

Like any good cor-porate executive, he also had an endgame in mind. He hopes to have supplied enough books and buildings to house them by 2020 that his services will no longer be needed.

Owned and operated by BC Hydro, the Elko Dam and Generating Station is located near the community of Elko, 30 kilometres west of Fernie.

The Elk River is considered one of the best kayaking and rafting rivers in the East Kootenay. People come from across North America and the world to recreate on the river, however, they may still be uninformed of the extreme danger of being on the river between the Elko Dam and the Powerhouse.

To address these safety concerns, we’ve designed and installed a warning system at Elko Dam to inform people in the canyon of impending spillway gate changes. The project includes the installation of sirens, strobe lights, improved safety fencing, and additional warning signs between the dam and the powerhouse. This warning system doesn’t inform river users downstream of the powerhouse.

Safety is our number one priority. We’ve installed this system to raise awareness of river hazards associated with dam operations, to improve safety and to ensure that people in the canyon are aware of sudden changes in water levels.

Please note that the land on both sides of the Elk River from the Elko Dam to the Elko Powerhouse is BC Hydro property. For public safety reasons, access to this section of the river across BC Hydro property isn’t permitted.

If you have any questions, or would like more information about the Elko Warning System, please contact Sally MacDonald, Community Relations, at 250 489 6841 or [email protected].

T r e vo r C r aw l e yThe B.C. government is looking

at implementing campaign expense limits for civic elections, in legisla-tion that was tabled on Thursday in Victoria.

Under the proposed legislation, limits will apply to candidates run-ning for mayor, council, electoral area directors, and school board trustees, as well as to third-party advertising sponsors.

There won’t be any immediate impact on expense limits; the pro-posed legislation sets out a frame-work, while actual amounts will be set by regulation.

Some of the specific changes in-clude:

•For candidates in election areas with less than 10,000 people, the proposed expense limits establish a flat rate of $10,000 for mayoral can-didates and $5,000 for all other lo-cally elected offices.

•For election areas with more than 10,000 people, a per-capita for-mula determines expense limits.

•Expense limits for candidates and electoral organizations would apply from Jan. 1 of the election year to election day (the third Saturday of October).

•Proposed expense limits for third-party advertising sponsors would be five per cent of the ex-pense limit of a candidate in the

local election area, with a cumula-tive, province-wide maximum of $150,000 applicable during a 28-day campaign program.

Expense limits for candidates apply from Jan. 1 of election year until General Voting Day.

“British Columbians and elec-tion participants expressed their support for expense limits for local government elections,” said Peter Fassbender, the Minister of Com-munity, Sport and Cultural Devel-opment.

“The proposed legislation re-flects the recommendations of the special committee. In addition, we are honouring our commitment to the recommendations of the joint B.C.-Union of British Columbia Mu-nicipalities Local Government Elec-tions Task Force in 2010 that ex-pense limits be implemented for all campaign participants.”

In the last civic election, current Cranbrook mayor Lee Pratt claimed $13,700 in campaign expenses, while Wayne Stetski, who was run-ning for re-election, claimed $8,641 in expenses.

Tabling the legislation in the fall session will allow a final opportunity for public consultation, as com-ments will be accepted until Nov. 27. Feedback can be delivered online at: www.cscd.gov.bc.ca/LocalGov-tElectionReform

I love words. I think there is a power in the language we use. Words have the power to build up or destroy, to af-

firm or to deny. Through words, we can create whole new worlds. Words reflect our choice to be inclusive or exclusive. Words express whether we are people who criticize and condemn or whether we praise and commend.

Our society has lost this sense of the power of words. We tend to devalue words. They’ve become cheap. Words are often used to cover up reality, or to deflect attention, or to try to justify a certain set of actions. How often, for example, do we trust what poli-ticians say in an election campaign?

Another sign of the devaluation of lan-guage are the euphemisms we use to hide the truth. The military euphemism “col-lateral damage”, for example, really means to kill innocent people. But the phrase tries to hide that reality behind something which sounds much more in-nocuous.

There are so many examples of adver-tising and political doublespeak. But that doesn’t mean that words are not power-ful. It’s not just words. When people mis-use words for their own purposes, they are in fact breaking trust with their read-ers or hearers. It’s a form of lying.

Words are truly powerful instruments. There’s no such thing as “just words”, and the old nursery rhyme “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is wrong. The right word in a particular instance is very powerful. The wrong word can be powerfully de-

ceiving and hurtful. The ancient Hebrews knew that. In the

first stories in the Bible, stories about creation, speaking plays a highly signifi-cant role. These stories are not history. They are a profound reflection on what it means to affirm that God was somehow involved in creation. At the centre of the

first story about creation, God speaks, and something happens. Words create worlds.

That continues to be true today. Words still can create — or destroy — worlds.

Scholars of language talk about “performative language”. One of the best examples of performative language is a promise. A promise is made in words. But it’s not just a set of words. A promise is also an action. A promise is a spoken act, which can only be lived out in action. Once made, a promise can not be taken back. It can only be kept … or broken.

The words of the promise do some-thing. They bring something into being. In a wedding, the couple makes promises to each other which bring a new reality into being. Two people who had been single and separate are now joined in something which did not exist before the promises were spoken.

Because of their power, we need to be careful about how we use words. That’s quite obvious when we come to things like making promises. We are careful not to promise something we can’t deliver.

But there are other examples about the power of language. Language is an evolving organism. Words change mean-ing regularly. New words are invented.

Old words are dropped.A good example is the word “charity”.

Today, charity means “generous actions or donations to aid the poor, ill, or help-less”. In the old King James Bible (pub-lished early in the 17th century), “chari-ty” meant something quite different 500 years ago. It meant what we now mean by “love” in its most profound sense. We would never imagine that we would draw the person we loved into our embrace and whisper tenderly, “My heart feels a warm and welcome charity for you”. The word has changed meaning.

The same thing has happened with other words (“gay” jumps immediately to mind). Another is the word “radicaliza-tion”. News people use that word now to mean “someone who has become more violent because of the teachings of vio-lence in religion.”

Originally, however, radical comes from the Latin word “radix” which means “root”. To be radical, thus, means to know your roots, to understand where you come from and what gives you nourish-ment.

It is one of those things which drive me crazy. I wish people would stop using “radicalized” to describe someone who has become more violent. It really means that a person who has delved deeply into their roots, a person who has become more grounded.

I say be careful about how you use words — in politics, of course, but also in everyday speech. Your words have power. Use that power to build others up.

Anyway, from what I’ve heard you wouldn’t have liked the job too much. Ex-politicians tell me that it is so frustrating trying to get the wishes of your constituents over to those in power. Maybe next time, eh?

But, when I did cast that vote for you I felt that it was an utter waste of time. It was four o’clock on voting day and I already knew that your Liberals had won and that your Justin was the designate prime minister. Somebody just has to suppress completely the results of all polls until the last one on Vancouver Island has closed. The present situation is ludicrous.

United WayEast Kootenay Residents: On behalf of the United Way Board of Directors I wish to thank

you for your support to the United Way East Kootenay, previous-ly known as United Way Cranbrook and Kimberley. Your dona-tions have helped to ensure that over 6,000 people every year re-ceive the help they need from caring, support agencies. United Way funding most often covers expenses not covered by other funders and ensures that seniors stay active and connected to their community, recreational activities are continued for chil-dren, youth and those disabled and that support programs re-

main in place to address a wide range of issues affecting the lives of many.

In 2015, sixteen agencies received United Way program fund-ing in addition to two community projects that received support. Tracked community donations allowed investments in Cran-brook and area, Windermere, the Columbia Valley and Fernie. If you would like more information, please contact our office for more information.

This year $97,785 has been invested in the East Kootenay real-izing a 24.9% increase over 2014 investments. These community investments address our Focus Areas of: All That Kids can be, Poverty to Possibility and Strong Communities.

Through the work of our United Way, the lives of many are being positively impacted. Our member agencies provide us with statistics and real stories on their successes throughout the year. The stories are encouraging: Children from single parent homes who have mentors helping them to be all that they can be, Young Parents gaining access to support services ensuring that their children receive a strong start in life, Seniors receiving more than just a place to live, but a place to be happy and connected to their neighbors, while staying productive in their community. In all cases not a handout, but a hand up.

There are so many stories and that is why we are looking to caring people like you to help us help more people. If each resi-dent of the East Kootenay made a minimum $10 donation every year to the United Way, think of the possibilities! Every dollar raised here, stays here!

ferring to a group of no less than two, but rarely more than four players. The orchestra for “The Geisha,” however, con-tained 12 members, including strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. It was a rousing success and left audiences and performers alike feeling that Cranbrook had climbed just a little higher on the social and musical scale.

Within a week the Cran-brook Auditorium hired members of the orchestra to provide live soundtracks for silent movies on a regular basis. The Rex Theatre next door also hired an ensemble — including Jessie Wallinger

on violin and Jean Edmond-son on piano — as did the Edison Theatre on Baker Street. Musical groups found further employment as sum-mer turned to autumn and “the dancing season” began. Regular dances at the Mason-ic Hall (the present day Stu-dio) began in October with overflowing crowds filling the same hardwood floor that is in use today.

There was work aplenty, al-though the dance orchestras, varying in size from three to ten pieces, rarely played tunes of a symphonic nature. It can be a little tricky dancing to Beethoven.

The Operatic Society re-turned in 1912 with “The Country Girl,” featuring a 15-piece musical ensemble and a chorus of 50 voices. The Wall-inger/Edmondson group be-came the Cranbrook Orches-tra and moved on to private engagements. Shortly thereaf-ter Mrs. Edmondson severed her connections with the Cranbrook Orchestra and formed the six-member Koo-tenay Orchestra.

Thus, for many years to come, Cranbrook’s two most popular small orchestras were led by women.

Kimberley native Jared du Toit has been named to Team Canada’s 2016 National Amateur Men’s Golf Squad. The announcement was made Thursday.

Kimberley native Jared du Toit is set to live out a childhood dream after being named to Team Canada’s 2016 Na-tional Amateur Golf Squad Thursday.

“Growing up going to tournaments and the bigger events, you see the Team Canada guys show up and it was al-ways a goal of mine to one day be there,” du Toit said over the phone from Arizona Thursday evening. “It’s super cool to look back and see where I was a couple years ago and see where I am today. I’m very, very happy to be on that team.”

du Toit, 20, was one of five players named to the national team by Golf Canada on Thursday, an honour that will open the Kimberley linkster to a boatload of new re-sources and opportuni-ties courtesy the support of Canada’s national governing body for golf.

“This is always an ex-citing time of year as we welcome the next group of young men and women selected as members of Team Can-ada,” said Jeff Thomp-son, Golf Canada’s chief sport officer, in a media release. “Supporting, developing and nurtur-ing Canada’s future stars remains to be at the core of our primary objec-tives. We are committed to investing in high per-formance talent through elite coaching, training, sport science and preparation.”

The first exciting op-portunity for du Toit will come in January 2016 when he travels to Mex-ico for a training camp with Golf Canada. The camp comes as an op-portunity to prepare for the 2016 World Amateur Golfers Championship, which is set to take place in September 2016 in Cancun at the El Cama-leon Golf Club.

It seems as though not even the sky is the limit for the former Sel-kirk Secondary School student, winner of the

2015 B.C. Amateur Championship after earning Freshman of the Year honours in the NCAA’s Western Athletic Conference last season.

While he celebrates being named to Team Canada this week, the 6-foot junior-aged golfer recently wrapped up his first semester of compe-tition with the NCAA’s Arizona State University (ASU) Sun Devils golf program.

du Toit transferred to ASU this past spring, fol-lowing two years of com-petition with the Univer-sity of Idaho Vandals.

“It’s been fun. There are a lot more resources available down here as well and I’ve been trying to use them to my ad-

vantage,” du Toit said. “I’m trying to keep working towards getting better. My first semester here, I wouldn’t say it was a complete success. I would’ve liked to play better.

“Golf’s one big pro-cess.”

Under the tutelage of renowned coach Tim Mickelson, du Toit’s strongest showing of the semester came Oct. 12 to 13 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif.

The Kimberley native posted three consecutive rounds in the mid-60s (67, 68, 68) en route to his first top-10 finish of the season -- placing eighth -- and helping the Sun Devils to a sec-ond-place team finish.

“I don’t think you can ever be too disappointed with [three rounds in the 60s],” du Toit said.

Following the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, du Toit and the Sun Dev-ils wrapped up the first semester with another second-place team fin-ish at the Tavistock Invi-tational in Isleworth, Fla., where du Toit rounded out his semes-ter with a T-28th finish.

For now, the Kimber-ley native is set to enjoy some time off, with his next NCAA event sched-uled for February 2016 -- the Waikoloa Invitia-tional in Waikoloa, Ha-waii.

“Looking back, I’ve played pretty well 11 months straight without a break,” du Toit said. “It’s definitely going to be nice to take some time off and when that time off is over, I’ll get back to work.”

Heading into the winter break, du Toit is ranked 122nd in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, making him the second-ranked am-ateur on Team Canada.

du Toit is joined on Team Canada’s men’s squad by 22-year-old Blair Hamilton (Burl-ington, Ont.; University of Houston), 22-year-old Eric Banks (Truro, N.S.), 20-year-old Hugo Bernard (Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Que.) and 20-year-old Stuart Mac-donald (Vancouver; Purdue University).

Team Canada’s men’s squad is set to be coached by Derek In-gram (head coach) and Robert Ratcliffe.

“It’s super cool to look back and see

where I was a couple years ago and see where I am today.

I’m very, very happy to be on [Team

Canada].”Jared du Toit

Stewart excited for opportunity with IceNewly-acquired forward expected to debut Friday versus Saskatoon

Taylor rocc aSports Editor

There was a fresh face roaming the halls of Western Financial Place Thursday afternoon as newly-acquired forward Dylan Stewart emerged from the Kootenay Ice dressing room with a smile across his face.

“Honestly, at first, I was shocked,” Stewart said Thursday of being traded. “Then after a while, you realize you’re going to be a getting an opportunity somewhere else to maybe play a lit-tle more and help a team out more. So I’m really excited.”

The 6-foot-1, 187-pound forward was ac-quired by the Ice, along with a conditional fifth-round pick, from the Prince Albert Raiders Wednesday afternoon.

He arrived in Cran-brook in time to skate with the Ice Thursday and is expected to be in the lineup when the Saskatoon Blades visit Western Financial Place

Friday night. With only 10 healthy

forwards prior to the ac-quisition of Stewart heading into the week-end, the arrival of the 18-year-old Edmonton native is a welcome one.

Ice head coach Luke Pierce expects to use Stewart at centre to begin with. Should that not work as hoped, Stewart brings a versa-tility that will allow him to be deployed at any forward position.

“He looks to be a real responsible player that was doing everything he

could to play within the system there in Prince Albert, which is really big for us,” Pierce said Thurs-day. “We’ve had some challenges with some of our guys understanding the structure and playing within it. Having another body that can buy into what we’re doing is a positive thing. We need to be a very detail-ori-ented club and tha-t’s what we’re looking for from him.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity for Dylan. What he chooses to do with it is up to him.”

Stewart describes himself as a 200-foot player that can put the puck in the net, is good on face-offs and will do anything to help his team win.

That’s all welcome news for Pierce.

Stewart, who posted eight goals and 10 points in 80 career games with the Raiders, is expected to wear sweater No. 27 when the Ice host the Blades Friday night.

Having started the season with the East Di-vision-leading Raiders, Stewart hopes to bring some of that mojo to Cranbrook in order to help spur his new squad.

First comes a contest with the Blades, a team Stewart is familiar with after having played them twice in Septem-ber as a member of the Raiders.

“With [the Raiders], we were really hot, win-ning a lot of games. There was a good feel-ing in the room,” Stewart said. “[I want to] bring some of what I’ve learned there, bringing it here to help us win some games.

“Shutting down [the Blades’] top line is really important. They real do a lot of damage. If we just play our game, shoot pucks and get pucks to the net, I think we can beat them.”

Taylor rocc aWhen the Kootenay

Ice host the Saskatoon Blades Friday at West-ern Financial Place, it will be behind the lead-ership of a new captain.

Canmore native Luke Philp will have a brand-new letter sewn onto his sweater as he officially takes to the ice as the 19th captain in franchise history, after being named to that role Wednesday afternoon.

“I’m extremely hon-oured,” Philp said Thursday afternoon prior to practice. “There have been lots of great guys who have worn the ‘C’ here before. It’s a huge honour.

“Everyone is a differ-ent leader and I’ll take my own approach to it.

“Lead by example with everything I do -- it starts on the ice. I’ve got to be the hardest-work-ing guy out there every day, both in practice and the games, and other guys will follow.”

Philp follows in a long line of well-established and celebrated players to have worn the ‘C’ be-fore him, including the likes of Nigel Dawes, Jar-ret Stoll and, most re-cently, Sam Reinhart.

While it might seem a tall task for the 5-foot-10 pivot to follow in the shadow of players like Dawes, Stoll and Rein-hart, it’s an opportunity he has earned and as far as head coach Luke Pierce is concerned, an opportunity the 19-year-old Philp is ready for.

“Right now, it’s what he brings on the ice -- not just his talent but his work ethic,” Pierce said Thursday. “He’s a guy who, off the ice, does a lot of the right things. He

works hard in the gym and he approaches the game the right way. He holds his teammates ac-countable and at the same time, no different than any other skill, there’s always things to work on as a leader. We want to help him grow that part of his game and become even more of a complete leader that way.”

The first official task for Philp will be to lead his comrades into battle Friday against the Saska-toon Blades (4-3-3-0).

Through 12 games this season, the Ice (2-10-0-0) have managed two victories and sit 12th in the WHL’s 12-team Eastern Conference.

The Blades visit Cranbrook for the first time this season after having dismantled the Ice by a 7-2 margin back on Oct. 7 when the teams met in Saskatoon.

“I’m interested to see how much our guys re-member from that,” Pierce said. “Anytime you get a whooping like that, you put that in the memory bank and you want to exact some re-

venge. I’m hoping that’s the case with our group.”

The Blades are fresh off receiving a whoop-ing of their own -- vic-tims of a 7-1 loss at the hands of the Red Deer Rebels Wednesday.

“Last time we didn’t have a very good effort against them in Saska-toon,” Philp said. “But we’re looking to come with a much harder ap-proach to the game and get on them right away. They’re a fast team. We’ll be ready for that and we’ll have a much better effort this time.”

Puck drop between the Ice and Blades is set for 7 p.m. Friday on Col-lege Night at Western Financial Place.

Notes: The Ice are ex-pected to be without D Cale Fleury (upper body), D Tyler King (knee), RW Jaedon De-scheneau (upper body) and RW Max Patterson (upper body) Friday night… Following Fri-day’s contest with the Blades, the Ice depart for two road games, begin-ning Saturday at Red Deer and concluding Monday at Edmonton…

Dear Annie: Two nights ago, I witnessed my best friend being verbally abused by her boyfriend. The boyfriend was drunk and probably doing something illegal. I listened to him yell at her on the phone all night while we were supposed to be spending time together for her birthday. It was 3 a.m., and he was demanding that I pick him up on my way to take her home. I told him no, because I didn’t want him being drunk and possibly violent in my car. I let my friend know that she can call me if she needs anything, and dropped her off at their house. Although I’m sure her boyfriend will eventually get himself arrested for violating his probation, I feel it is up to me to report him. But if I do, I will lose her friendship. Should I turn him in for the sake of my friend’s safety or mind my own business? -- Unsure in Ohio Dear Unsure: We aren’t certain what this man was doing that violated his probation. Yelling at his girlfriend isn’t enough to warrant a report, unless there is a restraining order preventing him from phoning her. Does his probation state that he cannot drink? If so, you should report him and let the chips fall. But a suspicion that he might have been doing something illegal is not sufficient, and the police likely would not pick him up for that unless you could provide proof. And without any evidence, he could accuse you of harassment. Please be careful. This guy sounds like a loose cannon. Your friend should call the National Domestic Violence Hotline (thehotline.org) at 1-800-799-SAFE and ask for help. Dear Annie: I’d like to offer some additional advice to “Can’t Stop Crying,” who wants to keep the dog confined because “Lassie” scratches the floors, wears down the furniture and leaves dog hair all over. Her husband thinks she’s being cruel and refuses to compromise. Now he sleeps with the dog, and she’s in tears. Your suggestion to get a trainer to intercede was good, but it won’t help with the dog hair. My savior was an indoor invisible fence. It is a small unit that plugs into an outlet creating a barrier. Our dogs have freedom throughout the downstairs, except for the formal living and dining room. And the invisible fence also prevents the dogs from going upstairs to our bedrooms. We allow the dogs on the family room furniture, which gives them lots of snuggle time with us. The durability of washable dog blankets protects the furniture and can be removed when we have company. Our dogs are spoiled and happy, and so am I. I’d also like to note that “Crying’s” dog probably has become accustomed to sleeping with the husband and it will take a little tough love to break that habit. A friend found that it helped to give their dog a large stuffed animal to sleep with instead. -- M. Dear M.: Thanks for the additional suggestions. We hope the husband is willing to compromise, but he seems quite content to romance the dog and leave his wife by herself in the bedroom. Local & Long Distance 1-250-489-0903 • 1-877-420-2194DL #30315

The First World War kept local musicians in steady employment for a time, with regimental balls, farewell parties, and general soirees of all types. Riding on the musical wave, local music teacher C.F. Nidd formed the Cranbrook Symphony Orchestra in 1916, and so it was that on Tuesday, February 1, citizens witnessed the birth of honest-to-good-n e s s - l i v e - c l a s s i c a l music performed en-tirely by local musicians.

The Grand Sympho-

ny Concert took place at the Auditorium with all proceeds going to the Belgium Relief Fund. The concert was deemed a success al-though a local editorial stated, “Three sympho-nies of Haydn, although beautiful to music lov-ers, are not exactly cal-culated to make con-certs generally popular to the large body of the public, a necessity to fi-nancial success.”

And so it was that the first ever Cranbrook Symphony heard the

first ever “Yeah, I don’t really like that. Play something else.”

The orchestra at-tempted just that in the month of May featuring a lighter programme. The music was good, the attendance was not. “A sad commentary on the public spirit and taste of our residents,” stated the local Herald newspaper.

The Cranbrook Sym-phony, now thirty strong, performed once again on October 26, 1916, when D.W. Grif-fith’s epic movie “Birth

of a Nation” ran for one night at the auditorium. All agreed it was a stellar evening but it appears to have been the swan song for the symphony. In fact, local symphonic music in general under-went a downturn as mu-sicians aimed to fill dance floors rather than theatre seats.

By 1919, it was Ed-mondson’s Jazz Orches-tra providing “the music with the pep,” the uniquely named Rud-nicki Vitrompidrum Or-chestra entertaining crowds with modern

tunes and coloured light shows and the Cran-brook Orchestra “jazz-ing” things up at regular Joy Club dances.

It wasn’t until 1922 that anything resem-bling a large orchestra made another appear-ance when members of the community ap-proached city council requesting funding to reform the city band, an on-again, off-again en-semble from Cran-brook’s earliest days. Promising a member-ship of between 20 – 30 musicians the group

Orchestral manoeuvres of yesteryear

met with local support and began rehearsals early in 1922 under the leadership of Lee Ed-wards.

Dave Kay, a local newspaperman and musician of the day re-calls in a newspaper ar-ticle of January 21, 1970, what transpired. The band leader was, stated Dave, “one of the most outstanding musicians with which Cranbrook has been blessed over the years.” He first ap-peared during a lum-berjack dance in which the regular violinist failed to show and im-mediately proved to be an excellent player. His abilities became the talk of the town and soon thereafter he organized a 35-piece concert or-chestra and also took over as not only leader of the city band, but also a choral group and a glee club of stringed in-struments which often performed as a single large unit. His wife came to join him and soon “Mama” also became a popular local figure. The following spring his wife left for Spokane for a se-rious operation and shortly thereafter he showed his friends a telegram stating his wife had died. He remained in town to conduct the band during a large cer-

emony for the WWI vets, earning the sympathy and admiration of the entire community and left the next morning to attend to his dear de-parted.

It soon became ap-parent that he had bor-rowed varying sums of money from numerous acquaintances just be-fore his departure. He was never seen in town again.

Amazingly, about a year later, Mama, appar-ently entirely non-de-ceased, returned and, with nary a word as to her mislaid husband, took over a restaurant on Van Horne Street. She proceeded to pay off many of his debts one by one but was soon re-quested to move on by local authorities who were not impressed with her upstairs “room-ers.”

The music contin-ued, however. The music always does.
