o We will also be using the OPM 311 book:Interactive Models for Operations and Supply Chain Management, 1st ed., by Byron J. Finch, McGraw-Hill publishers. ISBN-13: 978-0-07-285710-8; ISBN-10: 0-07-285710-2

We will have undergraduate students who have mastered CQS 311 previously serving as consultants for the course. The specific consultant for a section will be announced; contact information and office hours will be posted on Blackboard.

On-line Resources: Course site: http://blackboard.binghamton.edu/ Textbook Web site: http://www.scsite.com/Skills Assessment (SAM) site: http://samcentral.course.com/

Prerequisite: CQS 111 (*** Important – if you did not take CQS 111 or the equivalent, you need to make sure you have or quickly acquire the skills covered in that course, since this course will be advanced - not beginning - MS Excel 2007.)

Co-requisites: OPM 311 and MIS 311

Objective: To learn to use important computational tools that businesses and other organizations use in their operational and decision making activities. We will learn to use two Microsoft Office 2007 tools (Excel, Access) and P a g e | 1

software that simulates Operations Management tasks students learn in OPM 311. At the end of the semester, students should be able to use these tools on their own to collect, organize and analyze data and present information in a useful manner. This course is the integrated lab for the S-Core to support OPM 311 and MIS 311, its co-requisites.

Class format: The class will be held in a computer laboratory environment (PODS) where the students have access to Microsoft Office Tools. For OPM activities, we will use simulation software. The instructor will go over the relevant topics in the class and the students will be able to follow the activities on their computers in the laboratory. The students will be responsible for completing a set of exercises at the end of each topic. These exercises will be assigned as individual homework assignments.

Attendance: It is essential that the students attend the laboratory sessions. Based on past observations, students who regularly attend the laboratory sessions performed well in the semester, which resulted in better grades. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to obtain materials from your classmates. While Blackboard will be used as a communication and classroom tool, students are responsible for announcements and assignments made in class.

Semester Evaluations (grading policy)

Grade Components PercentageAssignments (homework) 40Quiz 1 15Quiz 2 15Final Exam 20Participation in Labs and Homework 10 Total points 100

Assignments: All the assignments will carry equal weight and they are individual assignments. The assignments must be turned in on the due date at the beginning of class – no exceptions (to be considered on time). Late submission will be penalized 5% per day and no assignment will be accepted if more than 3 days late unless compelling reasons can be presented. The purpose of assignments is to ensure that the students can use the tools effectively and understand the concepts associated with them. Therefore, it is very important that students do their own work rather than copying the assignments from others (see below on academic honesty). Even if you discuss with other students make sure that finally you do your own work when completing the assignments. The knowledge you gain while doing assignments will be tested by means of two quizzes and one final exam, where you have to do your own work in a limited time period.

Assessment: There will be two quizzes and one final exam (see schedule below.) These will consist of timed problems students will work on individually to be turned in. The final exam will be cumulative.

Policy on Academic Honesty - Please reference the BU School of Management policy at http://www2.binghamton.edu/som/pdf/SOMAcademicHonestyJune2010.pdf Initial academically dishonest behavior will result in a zero grade for the activity and a warning regarding the future consequences if the practice is continued. If the student or students continue the practice of copying, the student(s) will be reported to the relevant administrative bodies in the university. Students are responsible for protecting their own work and if identical work is identified as copies both parties will receive zero for the activity.

Special note on Flu Virus:

“If you have a fever, body aches, cough, and/or sore throat please do not come to class. Please remain at home or in your room and follow instructions from the University’s Health Services that will be available on the web. “

Useful hints regarding assignments

Read the basic concepts in each chapter before coming to the laboratory sessions. Start work on assignments early enough so you have time to talk to instructor or assistants if you encounter any problems or need clarification. Keep your work in a safe place; make frequent backups and keep the backups also in a safe place. Make sure to back up all your work because system failure is NOT an acceptable excuse for missing assignments.

Note – some of the software used in the course may require specific platforms/versions to work correctly. The PODS will support any software used; lack of a personal (owned by you) computer supporting required specifications is NOT an

acceptable excuse for missing assignments.
