WHO IS A CONTRIBUTOR ?•One who makes a difference in the lives of people around him

•One who thinks of giving something

•Promotes win - win situation

•Believes in man-making rather than polishing only the outside (when there is nothing inside)

•Thinks of “we” and not “I”

INTRODUCTION•Contributors approach the various situations in their life and work place

with a unique mindset. This mindset we call, the ‘Contributor Mindset’.

•The first aspect of the Contributor Mindset is the Contributor’s willingness

and capacity to find solutions

•When faced with a challenge, the Contributor’s first response is

“Can we find a solution?”

•But this is not all. The Contributor also “finds a solution”.

•Contributor develops the capacity to find solutions through continuous

practice and learning from other Contributors

CONCEPT EXPLORATION

Page 5: Cpd ch 7 design solutions

Do Not Keep Rigid Mindset

Page 6: Cpd ch 7 design solutions

Rigidity exists in society in form of

• People – Henry Ford on Model T.– “Available in any colour as long as it is black”

• System – Bureaucracy at work place– BSNL : Bhai Saheb Nahi Lagega

• Ideas (very critical !) – “Nobody can pass the sound barrier”– “Everything that can be invented has been

invented”– “Our culture is doomed.”

Page 7: Cpd ch 7 design solutions

Think Of Alternate Solutions/Ideas

Page 8: Cpd ch 7 design solutions

Generating new possibilities is the first step in creating innovations.

HOW do you discover and create possibilities?

• Start with yourself– You probably have millions of good ideas located right there

in your head, already. You just have to get hold of them and pull them out.

• Learn about community– You need to gather enough information to form an overall

picture of people's interests, struggles, similarities, values, and differences

Page 9: Cpd ch 7 design solutions

• Think about the future– we can make some educated guesses. And those guesses may

help us figure out next steps that work for our communities.

• Get beyond hopelessness– difficult time being creative and thinking about new possibilities

• Be courageous– In order to be creative you may have to be courageous. You may

have to dare to think in ways that are different from others

Orville Wright Wilbur Wright

“The airplane stays up in the air because it doesn’t have the time to fall…”

INVENTORS OF THE AIRPLANE

Page 11: Cpd ch 7 design solutions

• Both the Wright Brothers never graduated from High School.

• In 1889 the Wright Brothers started the West Side News

• It was a weekly newspaper that Wilbur and Orville Wright published briefly in 1889 and 1891

• In 1893 The Wright Brothers started a bicycle shop that allowed them to rent and repair bicycles.

• Only 5 of the Wright Brothers’ bicycles exist to this day.

Page 12: Cpd ch 7 design solutions

• They gained the mechanical skills essential for their success by working for years in their shop with printing presses, bicycles, motors, and other machinery.

• Their work with bicycles in particular influenced their belief that an unstable vehicle like a flying machine could be controlled and balanced with practice.

• This shows their continuous dedication towards work and improving their skills.

• When the world was thinking of ways to speed up travel on Land and Water, they came up with a completely new idea of travel by Air !!!

First Lift Off by Mankind

On December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright Flyer became the first powered, heavier-than-air machine to achieve controlled, sustained flight with a pilot aboard.

Page 14: Cpd ch 7 design solutions

• They further experimented in their own wind tunnel after being succeed in their first flight.

• On October 20, 1904 the Wright Brothers flew the first complete circle in an aircraft.

• The flight was 1 minute, 36 seconds and covered 4,080 feet.

• In 1905, On October 5, Wilbur made an amazing flight in which he circled the field 30 times in 39 minutes for a total distance of 24 1/2 miles and the flight discontinued because he ran out of fuel.

Contribution

See where we are today !!!The journey would have been longer if they didn't.

In 1903, we were

Don’t Give Excuses

Page 17: Cpd ch 7 design solutions

When facing a problem• Non – Contributors give all type of excuses whenever some problem crops up which they know is going to push them to the extremes.

• For them, the glass is ‘always half empty’.

• Contributors, on the other hand, have a Will-Do attitude (not just can-do). The glass is ‘always half full’ for them.

• Having a such an attitude is actually about making a decision to look to the solution rather than just the problem.

• How to cultivate a ‘can-do’ attitude?

Page 18: Cpd ch 7 design solutions

Can-Do Attitude of a Contributor

• I can do everything, if its important enough for me to do.

• I may not do all at once but I can do everything.

• I may not be best at everything but I can do everything.

• There will be limitations but I can do everything.

• I’ll need help but I can do everything.

Page 19: Cpd ch 7 design solutions

Ratan Tata

• Ratan Naval Tata is the present chairman of Tata Sons and therefore, Tata Group.

• He is also the chairman of major Tata companies.

• He had determined to set up a plant for Tana Nano in India.

• He faced major opposition and struggled with The land acquisition controversy, acquisition of the proposed Nano factory of Tata Motors at [Singur] in Hooghly district, West Bengal, India.

• Despite of all the problems faced by him, he didn’t lose hope and soon found a growing opportunity in Sanand, Gujarat.

• His major concern all the way was not just his own profit but comfort to the middle-class.

Fear Of Failure

Page 22: Cpd ch 7 design solutions

Case Study 1: THOUGHT OF LIGHT

•In 1879, Edison discovered that a carbon filament in an oxygen-free bulb glowed but did not burn up for 40 hours.

• Edison eventually produced a bulb that could glow for over 1500 hours.

Thomas Alva Edison

Meaning of Failure

Page 24: Cpd ch 7 design solutions

Case Study 2: Henry Ford failed

Page 25: Cpd ch 7 design solutions

Ford’s failures at a glance

• He “burned” through all the money from his first group of investors without producing a car

• He eventually produced a car and raised another $60,000 in share capital, but his Detroit Auto Company went bankrupt

• In the 1920s, Henry Ford refused to update the Model T car, leading sales to fall dramatically

• Ford tried to launch a political career, but never succeeded

- Henry Ford
