monitoring the calves will be central to your learning about the dairy industry and what it entails.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS
For easy identification please think of a name for your team and take a picture of your team with the calves. A memory stick has been provided to your teacher. Only work submitted electronically on the ‘Cows Create Careers’ memory stick will be assessed, except where a CD is also submitted with the CCC memory stick. No CCC memory stick - no assessment!
STUDENTS – Years 7 & 8
Students in Teams of 4 - 5 will submit the following work for assessment:• Newsletter Task (word/publisher) or Probiotec Competition**• Mootube Moovie (mp4 or wmv)• Snail Mail or E-mail to Dairy Australia together with a Report (word/publisher)• Student Evaluation Forms (pages 14 - 15)• A Photo of your Team with the Calves (jpg)• The Final Team Checklist (page 16).** Please refer to the School Resource Kit for further information in relation to the Probiotec Competition.
TEACHERS
Teachers are able to gain points towards the school prize by submitting the following:
• Teacher evaluation form and judging rubric (pages 6 - 8 in the Teacher’s Handbook).Teachers who submit both the teacher evaluation form and the judging rubrics will gain an additional 5 points for the school prize.
BONUS POINTS!
A bonus point will be awarded to any school that submits all their work before the due date for that region. This will be added to the school’s average score for the school prize.

Presentation and Awards CeremonyPresentation & Awards CeremonyAll participants will receive a certificate of participation and an invitation to the Presentation &
Awards Ceremony.
Please refer to the School Resource Kit for the date of this presentation. The day will start at
10.30am and conclude after lunch at 1.30pm. Lunch will be provided to all who attend.
The overall winning team prize and school prize will be announced at the Presentation & Awards
Ceremony for each region.
Region’s Winning Team
Region’s winning team wins $50 for each team member (max $250).
The winning team prize is determined by adding together the score of each of the team assessment
tasks along with the score from the teacher’s judging rubric.
The highest team score for the
region will take out the team
prize. (This prize is awarded in
both junior and senior sections.)
Region’s Winning School
Region’s winning school will receive $500.
To be eligible for this prize the school must submit a minimum of four Cows Create Careers teams.
The winning school prize is determined by calculating the average of the score from each of the
teams that have been submitted.
The highest average in the
region will take out the school

Your school has its own industry advocate who will visit to give a presentation to students about their role in the dairy industry.
Some Key Ideas/Questions
The industry advocate will give an interesting presentation about the dairy industry. You may wish to investigate in more depth aspects of the industry advocate’s work such as:
• What path did they take to their current position?
• What are the real positives about working in the industry?
• What was the nature of study undertaken to qualify them to do this work?
• What ‘duties’ do they perform in this position?
• What do they think that they will be doing in five years time? What about ten years?
• What special talents and interests are needed to succeed in this kind of work?

Now that you have started on your Cows Create Careers assessment tasks it may be a good time to start brainstorming careers. To help start you off, a number of career areas are listed in the box:

The calves are going to be arriving in your school soon. How about as a class you work together
to ensure that you are well prepared for their arrival.
Key Ideas...
Create a checklist of questions to ask the
dairy farmer.
The first question will be to ask the dairy farmer
about the feeding regime for the calves. Write these
details on the poster that has been included in your
School Resource Kit. Don’t forget to display the
poster somewhere that everyone can see.
Prepare daily and weekly checklists for
monitoring the calves.
Have a look over the samples that have been included in the School Resource Kit.
Develop a roster.
What is the most effective way for teams to share the care and monitoring of the calves during
their stay at school? How can we ensure each team shares responsibilities (including weekends)?
Research and identify environmental conditions.
Identify conditions conducive to calf safety and growth and ensure that your facilities meet these
requirements prior to the calves arrival.
Prepare an emergency plan.
Develop a plan to ensure the health and welfare of the calves.
Research and understand the importance of your own personal hygiene.
Hygiene is extremely important when looking after animals. Make sure that your team and class
understands why. Display the poster that has been provided in the School Resource Kit as a
reminder to students.
Does the class understand the general principles of cattle management and in specific calf
management?
Do you know what needs to be done, when and why? Perhaps refer to the Dairy Australia Calf
Rearing Handbook for helpful tips. A copy of this can be found on the CCC memory stick as a
PDF or alternatively your teacher may have a copy in the library from last year’s project.
DONT FORGET! As a science experiment make sure you monitor the feeding regime and
weight gain of the calves whilst they are in your care. Include this in your Scientific Report!
Arrival of the Calves in School
No physical copies of any assessment tasks are to be sent to Cows Create Careers - only files on the CCC Memory stick (or an additional CD).
1. Newsletter or Probiotec Competition**
The major publishing component of your work with the calves is to be done using word or publisher. A model of such a newsletter appears on pages 9 - 10 of this handbook. An explanation of the task appears on page 7. Added support for this task appears under multimedia publishing tools on the school resource memory stick.Information provided in your newsletter, including images created in Paint, graphs created in Excel and digital photographs, will tell the reader about your involvement with Cows Create Careers, the areas your class or team focused on, and the interesting ‘news’ you have discovered through your research. Further details about the Newsletter task can be found on Pages 8-10.**Please refer to the School Resource Kit for further information in relation to the Probiotec Competition.
2. Mootube MoovieThe Mootube Moovie is a short movie incorporating a 30-second introduction, 120-second main body, and a 30-second conclusion. Dairy Australia will select the most entertaining and informative Mootube Moovies to publish on their website - who knows, your movie might just be the chosen one! Further details about the Mootube Moovie task can be found on Page 11.
3. Snail Mail or E-mailThis publishing task involves writing a letter or e-mail. The letter or e-mail should be addressed to Dairy Australia and focus on the industry advocate, the dairy farmer, and how the team felt about the Cows Create Careers project.A scientific report should be attached to the letter or the e-mail to provide a summary of the calve’s condition during their time in your care.Teams should address the letter to Dairy Australia, Mr. Ian Halliday, 60 City Road, Southbank VIC 3006 or send the e-mail to Mr Halliday at [email protected]. It is important that if sending an e-mail the teams MUST copy the text to a word document for presentation to judges on the CCC memory stick. Please don’t post your letters, just include a copy of them on the CCC memory stick.All letters or e-mails should be presented in business format. A copy of your letter or e-mail will be forwarded to Dairy Australia, your dairy farmer and industry advocate by Cows Create Careers
after assessment. Further details about the Snail Mail or E-mail task can be found on Page 12.
4. Student Evaluation FormsThe student evaluation forms appear on page 14 - 15 of this handbook. Make sure each member of your team completes this form. An easy 5 points if these are all submitted!
Tasks for Submission

If you design an informative newsletter an entertaining Mootube Moovie, and you write a letter to Dairy Australia by following the guidelines, together you and your school could be significantly richer. A grand plan!
It is important not to forget to take a photo of your team and the calves. This will form part of the final assessment. Make sure the photo is innovative and fun!
Min and Mel’s Moooos-letter on the following pages demonstrates what a double-sided A4
newsletter looks like. A focus of your learning will be on creating a newsletter, and the word
processing skills needed to work with text, graphs, illustration, columns, tables, page layout
and so on.
Take the opportunity to look under multimedia publishing tools on your school resource memory
stick where you will find some useful tips to assist you with using Paint, using the drawing tools in
Word and using Excel to create a graph.
Newsletter ContentThe Cows Create Careers judges (and your teachers) do not want all newsletters to be the same.
For this reason there are a number of choices and ideas provided in this handbook on pages
12 - 15, in the Teacher’s Handbook on pages 10 - 12, and under ‘project samples’ on the school
resource memory stick.
What you report on and how you go about it is up to you.Judges will be interested in:
• How the newsletter looks (whole-page
design and layout, columns, tables,
graphs and illustration)
• Content (is there evidence of rich learning
and deep thinking? Is the newsletter
informative? Is it interesting? Are the
reporters communicating clearly to their
audience?)
• ICT skills and word processing (is there
evidence the students are developing
skills with computer publishing?).

While the calves are in the school we will undertake a number of learning tasks that are to be reported on in a newsletter. Each team will create a newsletter in Word or Publisher.Let's get mooooooving!

Focus 1: PlanningUse the table to plan for headings, graphs,
photos, and Paint images. Plan your newsletter
to include all components as instructed.
Remember to plan for exactly two A4 pages
(back-to-back).

Focus 2: Creating a mastheadComponents of the masthead are tables and
text. You also need to take borders off the table.
Focus 3: ColumnsNote that sections of this newsletter are in two
columns. The masthead is in a single column.
The Introduction is in a single column. The font
is Arial, with 12 point bold headings and 12
point plain text.
Focus 4: Creating a TableNote the customised border on the ‘Headings,
Sections and Images’ table. The table has 2
columns of differing width. You will learn how
to format tables using borders and shading,
merging cells and altering the width of columns.
You must include a table in your newsletter.
Focus 5: Paragraph SpacingThese paragraphs have been formatted to give
a 3 point space each time the ENTER key is
pressed. Paragraph spacing is useful when you
come to designing so that content fits a whole
page exactly.
Focus 6: Inserting a PhotoUse the digital camera to take a photo for your
newsletter. Insert the picture from file (don’t cut-
and-paste).
Creating a Newsletter in WordMin and Mel’s Moooos-letter is a demonstration model for Cows Create Careers (Years 7 & 8).
Focus 9: Graphs Use Excel to create a simple spreadsheet
and present the information graphically. The
Excel help tutorial will help you achieve this.
NOTE: The graph below is in a section of only
one column.
Focus 10: Balance (Editing) Use Print Preview to see how the
newsletter looks as a 2-page document.
This ‘Moooos-letter still had a gap at the
bottom, so I inserted a picture ahead
of this paragraph. It was still a bit above
the bottom, so I enlarged the graph and
increased the paragraph spacings. That
did the trick!
Focus 7: InternetDownload images from the internet by right
clicking, or use the scanner and scanner
software to create and edit digital images.

2. Mootube Moovie Task Mootube Moovies are short and sharp... you have only 3 minutes to impress!
Mootube Moovies are 3-minute videos (±10 seconds) that address this statement:
Statement: SCIENCE plays a significant role in the Australian Dairy Industry?
Demonstrate the way science plays a role in the industry.
What type of careers are available?
Tell the audience why they should choose dairy as a career.
Don’t forget to include the results of your science experiment?
TIP: Perhaps you can use ‘role play’ for your movie. Remember your imagination is your only limitation!
Your Mootube Moovie must:
• Be presented as a file that will run on freely-available software (preferably mp4 or wmv).
• Run for between 170 to 190 seconds.
• Be structured so that there is a 30-second introduction, 120-seconds of main body, and a 30-second conclusion.
• The main body of the Mootube Moovie is a simple scientific experiment that demonstrates the type of methodical thinking and processing likely to be undertaken by a person in a particular career. Typically, the Mootube Moovie will introduce the career area and particular occupation and the nature or reason behind the experiment.
The presenters will then choose and demonstrate an experiment eg. test milk for pH levels using milk test strips, using food dye and detergent to examine the fat properties in dairy products, separate milk particles, make sticky milk or demonstrate the weighing and monitoring of your calves’ growth whilst in your care. Perhaps google ‘milk experiments’ on the internet or your teacher could ask your Cows Create Careers Project Manager for assistance!
• As the point of any experiment is to test for knowledge, the conclusion must link logically to the question posed in the introduction as supported by the evidence shown in the experiment.
For a simple model, consider how TV chefs communicate what they intend to cook, what ingredients and cooking tools are needed (already set out), they then demonstrate the process, and finally they give an overview of how their product matches what they intended to cook.
IMPORTANT: Aims of the Mootube Moovie are to engage students and a wider audience in authentic scientific activity that is highly informative and interesting/entertaining. In time, it is hoped the many Mootube Moovies published will provide quality examples to inspire and educate others.

3. Snail Mail or E-mail Task
Your team should either word process a letter or write an e-mail in business format to Dairy Australia.
The letter or e-mail should talk about your experiences and what you have learnt about the dairy industry and your calves. Outline what you have learnt from the industry advocate and dairy farmer who visited your school.
Teams should address the letter to Dairy Australia, Mr. Ian Halliday, 60 City Road, Southbank VIC 3006 or send the e-mail to Mr Halliday at [email protected].

An important component of this project is a summary of the calve’s condition during their time in your care. The report must include data on each calf’s growth, feed intake and health status.
A suggested format for your report writing is ‘the Scientific Method’.
The key elements of the Scientific Method are:
• Identification of the problem
• Forming a hypothesis
• Using deductive reasoning
• Data collection and analysis
• Deriving a conclusion
• Friendly text
• Scientific information
• Grammar and spelling.
Write a letter or send an e-mail of thanks to Dairy Australia and attach a Scientific Report.
