AS Preliminary Task – School Magazine Front Cover and Contents Analysis And Evaluation

Page 2: Cover and contents page

MastheadFor my masthead I chose the title “KHS Chronicle”. It’s simple to remember and in addition to this it appears professional and gives the discernment that the magazine will be enlightening and student related. The use of primary colours to make it appear more prominent, as well as using colours which epitomize the school logo and uniform of the students. This makes the magazine more relevant to students. This is effective as by using acquainted colours the students associate with the school and education they know it’s a magazine for them.

As well as this I made the font larger than the supplementary coverlines, and used the font “Myriad Pro” to make it appear more proficient and specialized, reflecting on the type of individuals that would read the magazine.

Main Image

The main image focuses in on the key subject of the magazine – Youth. The coverline at the bottom of the magazine further shows how this issue of the magazine is based around being young and celebrating it. The main image is a medium shot, with both natural and unnatural lighting. The image is of a female sixth former. The colours she is wearing in the image show a link to the school colours and appear smart yet casual, setting a standard and a role model for younger students, which is a positive effect.

Other Images – Contents Page

The images I used for the contents page reflects on both student life as being social and fun, as well as educational and enjoyable. The blending of these images in relation to the coverlines is effective as it uses positive imagery to reinforce the school’s affirmative attitude towards learning and its students.

Coverlines And Language – Cover

The coverlines are effective as they are informative and give a clear idea of what the reader can expect to find in the magazine. The language used is easy to understand, and the colours appear bold yet light. The language used makes each line seem fascinating and stimulating. Titillation is used to make the reader want to read the magazine through relevant coverlines.

Coverlines And Layout – Contents Page

The layout of the contents page is similar to the cover page in the sense that the style and colour of the font are the same. The only difference is the three images, which relate to the coverlines. The layout is clear and easy to understand, meaning people would find it easier to locate certain articles that interest them.

The coverlines are easy to read and informative. Because of the numbers opposite the coverlines the readers will find it easier to locate the articles.
