What to consider when transporting restricted items

Restricted items are not illegal or banned objects. They are simply restricted because one or more attributes of the object may pose a threat of some kind or a country puts that object under reasonable restriction or outright prohibition owing to the laws of the land. You can transport restricted items, provided you know the legal repercussions and if you are allowed to ship it at all. Where you are based, how you send the restricted items, where you are sending to and why; all such factors are quintessential in the whole exercise of transporting restricted items.

Here’s what you should consider when transporting restricted items.

• Know the law. Your country will have a list of restricted items that you cannot export. The country you are sending the item to will have certain laws pertaining to the same. The law may need you to send restricted items in certain kinds of packages, in a certain manner and you will obviously have to declare all particulars about the items. You should know the permissible limits of transporting such items. For instance, you can hire a courier to send fragrances to Spain or France. But there is a limit to how many or how much you can send. You can use a courier to France to send truckloads of fragrances or some chemicals and have it pass through customs unstopped. There would be relevant excise duties and you may not even have the license to ship such large consignments to the country.

• Know the excite duties, custom duties and any other taxes that would be levied on the restricted items. Usually, any item that is worth more than a preset value as decided by a given country will be charged a tax. Even personal gifts are taxable. When it comes to restricted items, you have to pay excite duties and there may be some surcharge or special fees to be paid. Tobacco, alcohol and perfumes require special excise duties. They are not banned items but they are restricted. Likewise, from chemicals to perishable goods, all items will invite a certain fee or duty.

Learn more about the preparation and safety of sending restricted items. Normal items can be packaged in any way you want. Even if the items get damaged, it is you who would be affected but should restricted items get damaged on the way, there could be risks. Such risks have to be mitigated and that needs relevant packaging and impeccable safety standards.
