Dessert includes creme brulee and mixed berry compote. Turning off the lights always makes thingsmore interesting.

That’s the driving concept behind a specialWet ‘n’ Wild Wednesday at Harrah’s on Jan. 9.

The Party Nerdz— an eclectic group ofmod-els, dancers, performers and others — will starin Neon Nights, a Glow-in-the-Dark Body PaintShow.DJVitoG,Mazz and Paul Desistowill pro-vide the music.

As thename implies, amajor focus of the eve-ning is body paint and glow accessories. “We aregoing to have an artist here who will paint someof the staff andalso some of theguests,” saidHoward S. Weiss, regional directorof nightlife opera-tions for CaesarsEntertainment’sEastern Division.

The paintcomes off after ashower or bath.

“We are offer-ing something dif-ferent and tryingout a new type of party. It’s workedwell in othermarkets and adds a lot of excitement for ourguests and employees,” Weiss said.

The Party Nerdz describe themselves as aneccentric team of “quirky yet beautiful models, event planners, hairstylists,makeupartists,mu-sicians, dancers, body painters, computer pro-grammers, comic book collectors and more.

The group’s members specialize in fashionshows, themedparties,modelcastings,webmar-keting, body painting showcases, multimedianetworking, marketing and promotions.

The Party Nerdz slogan: “Best ... Night ...Ever!!”

Party Nerdz was created by two “real-life”nerds,DarnellHicksandJorgeVergara, inJanu-ary. With their experience in bartending, night-life management, and networking as well astheir interests in comic books, video games, in-tellectual reading and corny jokes, the two con-ceived an event-planning company from leftfield.

When Chef Carl Colucci came onboard recently as chef at Showboat’s Ca-sa Di Napoli , one of the innovations hebrought involvedmakinganddryingpas-ta.

“Chef Carl was at the forefront, driv-ing this,” said Robert Schoell, executivechef at Showboat, who oversees the ho-tel’s restaurants. “Part of the seasonalchange in themenuwas to focus on freshingredients.A lot of freshpasta is nowonthe menu.”

Longtime favorites such as spaghettiand meatballs are made with the freshpasta. As January approaches, Casa DiNapoli is developing its winter menu.

“We’ve taken off the least popularsellers,” Schoell said, adding that somepast specials will be incorporated intothe menu.

The menu will feature chicken tortel-liniwithwildmushroomsandasun-driedtomato pesto. “It’s a little healthier,”Schoell said. “It’s finishednotwithbutterbut extra-virgin olive oil, and uses natu-ral chicken broth, so it’s not very heavy.”

The restauranthas increasedusageofits wood-burning brick oven. The resultis a thin, crispy-crust pizza. Oven-roast-ed scampi in a garlic herb sauce comesfromthebrickoven, asdoeseggplant rol-latini.

The restaurant has concentrated onseafood, too, Schoell said. “We have anice seared branzino, which is aMediter-ranean fish.”

The fish is filleted and served withfennel potatoes, capers, olives and toma-tobroth.Also added is a stripedbasswithcaper and raisin sauce and roasted cauli-flower.

Wintertime brings fewer opportuni-ties for regional-grown vegetables.Mushrooms from Kennett Square, Pa.,and broccoli rabe from Hammonton areexceptions. That changes when theweather warms up.

G. Love admits the distinction betweenG. Love andG. Love and Special Sauce doesn’t really exist. Thesame musicians play on the albums, including 2011’s“Fixin’ to Die,” released as a fourth solo project. Thesinger-songwriter also recorded10 studio albumswithSpecial Sauce on the cover.

“Nomatterwhat, it’s thesamebandanyhow. It’s justa name on the record whether it is one or the other,”said G. Love, whose real name is Garrett Dutton. Heand Special Sauce will play Borgata Sunday night.

“We try and mix up the material from all the rec-ords, solo and group,” he said in a phone interview. “Our set is pretty oldschool. We’re inbetweenrecordsrightnow, sowedodeepercataloguecutswedon’t get to do for a record release tour.”

Look for a handful of not-yet-released songs . “We like to develop the songsonstage before we record them,” Dutton said. “We feel confident enough toplay them. Our fans want to hear new stuff. Part of the reason they come outand see us is we are not afraid to take a chance on stage.”

It’s not just about songs but the general vibe and experience, the Philadel-phia native said of his concerts. “It will be an inspired night. Like a keg party

and church revival.”Expect a few covers as well. “Fixin’ to Die,” in-

cludes Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”and Velvet Underground’s “Pale Blue Eyes.”

“It’s always fun to drop a cover people know andloveasabonus,” saidDutton, who turned40 thisyear.

“I was reticent about that (birthday), but life isgood. I still feel like a kid even though I’ve beenaround the block a couple of times. I keep learningevery day. And I do what I love as life’s work,” saidDutton, who lives in Boston.

He knew at 16 he wanted to play music for a living.“I was so passionate. I did not want to go to college. I did not care if I made

money,” he said.Still, if he had to select another occupation, Duttonwould try teaching cre-

ative writing or French.Dutton anticipates a trip to the studio for a new record this spring.“Iwill say as a band,we’re always progressing. I feel like I have a lot to say

still. Next year will be our 20th and I feel we are moving forward musically. One thing I try and avoid is not to repeat myself.”

‘LIKE A KEG PARTY AND CHURCH REVIVAL’SPECIAL SAUCESWhile music is his priority,Garrett Dutton has addedother products based on theband’s name, Special Sauce.Dutton developed G. Love’shot sauces.‘It’s fun and goes with themusic,’ he said.He has three flavors:» Louisiana-style hot sauceemulates the blues, whichinfluences Dutton’s music.» Caribbean yellow is similarto a sauce he encounteredplaying gigs in St. Martin.» Green Sriracha sauce isfrom Thailand.Over the next 20 years,Dutton sees himself in thesame league as Jimmy Buf-fet and Paul Newman, creating a name in theculinary field.‘They made themselves intoa brand,’ Dutton said.

GAMING DESTINATIONS & DIVERSIONS

Unlike this year, 2013 will not bring anew casino. But it will bring amajor con-version of portions of Resorts AtlanticCity into a Jimmy Buffet-themed play-ground.

And Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa willcelebrate its milestone 10th anniversary.

High-tech gaming will likely come totown in the form of hand-held gamblingdevices used off the casino floor, and In-ternet gaming funneled through the At-lantic City casinos.

Caesars’ plans

Caesars Entertainment will welcomenames in both boxing and entertainmentin 2013. The corporation also will an-nounce the booking of a summer-long en-tertainment residency similar to thosethat Elton John and Celine Dion have inLas Vegas, said Don Marrandino, presi-dent of Caesars Entertainment’s Easterndivision.

“We’re working on real big-nameacts,” he said.

In addition, the Donny and Marieshow, which spent aweek inAtlanticCitythis past summer, will play for severalweeks.

“The idea is to create an energy on theboardwalk,” said John Palmieri, execu-tive director of theCRDA.TheCRDAan-ticipates building the initial pavilion as acallingcardforpotential tenants, hesaid.

“Going forward, corporate tenantswould pay rent to operate a pavilion,”Palmieri said.

TheCRDA isworking on a program tobuild a new visitor center by the spring. Also on tap is the repair of the boardwalkand seawall to re-establish the connec-tion of the boardwalk to Historic Gard-ner’sBasin in the Inlet section of the city. The construction includes replacing thedeteriorated section of boardwalkwashed away by superstorm Sandy.

Promoting the city

The Atlantic City Alliance introducedthe DO AC marketing campaign thisyear, and all indications point to a suc-cessful promotion.

“Oneareawehope to target in2013 isalot more proactive, specific calls to ac-tion rather than just pushing a generalbenefit to visit,” said Alliance PresidentLiza Cartmell.

Among the discussions, Cartmellcited a major sand-sculpture competi-tion, awinter fest on the boardwalk and abeach concert.

“These things provide a reason to cometo Atlantic City,” she said. “This gives usmore tools to enhance visits.”

Another avenue for theAlliance is an up-grade of the website for better mobile use, including faster and more complete tripplanning tools.

At Borgata, Nugget

For Borgata, 2013 will be all about the10th birthday. “We are very excited to cele-brate such a momentous occasion with ourextended customer family and team mem-bers,” said Joe Lupo, senior vice presidentof operations.

At GoldenNugget, 2013 is about buildingcustomer loyalty and getting the word outabout its brand.

“We want to become the local casino, where people feel comfortable going to,”said Laura Powers, director of marketingfor Golden Nugget Atlantic City.

Golden Nugget will add another night-club as part of a new nightlife concept, shesaid. “It will be built in the casino, but I’mnot sure where,” she said.

Thepropertyalso expects to createmoreactivities associated with the H20 pool areaon the roof, with more special events.

“We’re always looking to expand offer-ings to consumers,” Powers said.

While no hotels or hotel towers willopen, work should move forward on anew conference center at Harrah’s set toopen in 2014.

“We’ll alsocontinue toexploreways toget revenue not just through gaming.Wehave to improve non-gaming amenitiesevery year,” Marrandino said.

Caesars Entertainment will add ama-jornewrestaurant in 2013.Marrandino isnot ready to divulge details.

“You have to refresh what you offerguests. Las Vegas has a successful for-mula doing that, and we have to bring ithere.”

When the Casino Reinvestment Devel-opment Authority released its TourismDistrict master plan in April 2011, a criti-cal component called for the creation ofan Arts District centered around Missis-sippi Avenue. The street houses bothBoardwalk Hall and Dante Hall Theater.

The CRDA earmarked another ele-ment by adding 16,000 square feet of re-tail space geared toward arts-related es-tablishments on the street level of the $30million Wave parking garage, on Missis-sippi and Fairmount avenues.

“We could not ask for better, morequalified partners than Stockton Collegeand theNoyesMuseum in developing thiscornerstone of Atlantic City’s Arts Dis-trict,” said CRDA Executive DirectorJohn Palmieri. “The success of this dis-trict requires the expertise and proventrack record and the economic lift thispartnership brings.”

CRDA and Stockton College — whichalso oversees the Noyes Museum— haveexecuted a lease in which the agency willfinance theadditionof theretail spaceatacost of up to $2million. TheNoyes, whoseprincipal location is in Galloway Town-ship, will lease out and manage the pro-ject. The planwill include a ceramics stu-dio, gallery space and individual artiststudios where local artisans can work.
