COURAGEOUS CHALLENGE VOLUNTEER PREPARATION GUIDE Dear Volunteer, The success of AFM’s 2nd Annual Courageous Challenge is made possible because of the efforts of our Volunteers. You are the foundation for an incredible event! If you are receiving this document your name is most likely in here (perhaps in multiple roles). If you do not see your name let us know ASAP; there is a place for you and we need all the help we can muster! The Event Guide has been created to make your volunteer experience with AFM pleasantly memorable and a whole lot of fun. The guidance provided herein should also result in greater productivity of the volunteer team through proper utilization of individual efforts. Several of the volunteers present on event day will have invested time and effort months in advance as Team Leaders in planning meetings, community groundwork, partner development, marketing, and other vital components in order that all volunteers can better accomplish their assigned task on Challenge Day which is September 9 th in Peachtree City. The end-state goal of the Courageous Challenge is that our Challengers, their many fans and supporters, and our valued Community Partners will participate with much enthusiasm in a well-planned and fun event that is transforming our community into a beacon of hope for veterans, law enforcement and all individuals in our community at risk of self-harm and suicide. SEVENTY+ Challengers have registered for the Challenge (3x the 2016 #). Our goal this year is 20,000 push-ups in 22 minutes and $20,000 raised to provide Rapid Response Suicide Intervention and Crisis Response Training for the community. Due to the number of Challengers, it is possible that we may have TWO HEATS, however, the goal is ONE HEAT, which will provide an incredible visual experience for all in attendance. Prior planning through review of this preparation guide is essential to the making of a successful event. A Volunteer Planning meeting is scheduled for Sunday, August 27 th from 1:00 to 2:30 at the Peachtree City Library community room on the lower level. Please do your best to attend. Volunteer T Shirts will be given out that day for all who have pre-ordered one. On behalf of the AFM Board of Directors, our Challengers, and the Community, THANK YOU! NINE SIMPLE STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL PHOTO DOCUMENTATION

8. We want to get some good after-action commentary on video. MC will interview some of the Challengers

Counters

Counters, you will have the most difficult volunteer job of all; maintaining focus for 22 minutes on one person to assure

that the form is good. You will be an encourager to help someone who is struggling to keep going just as we do every day

in our work at AFM. This is what the Challenge is all about. It is symbolic of the help that those at risk of suicide often

need. Just as we have discovered how a person at risk is encouraged to press on so you will be that helper to the person

that is sweating it out and wondering if it is worth it to keep going.

STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL COUNTING

1. Take note of the schematic of the gym floor. We will need to utilize the entire court

2. Challengers on outside lines of the gym should have toes on end lines in their starting position.

3. We are using a modified 9x9 formation, 9 across the front and 9 to the rear with blank spots up front in the

middle and to the rear for equipment. Create a good symmetrical formation

4. We will not be using chairs on the gym floor due to liability. Sit off center from the competitor for photo

purposes

5. Challengers will face center court. End line Challengers should have toes on the end lines. There should be

plenty of space between units

6. Record the number of completed reps at various intervals which will be called out at 1,3,6,9,12,15,18,21 and 22

minutes which is the final recording and score.

7. Reps should be completed according to the hand release instruction that was given. Palms must come off the

ground. There is no requirement as to how high. The palms must simply come off the ground.

8. At STOP TIME quickly return the completed score card to the designated volunteer on the main floor.

9. Where possible we will have two counters per Challenger. One will hold clipboard and record while the other

counts with clicker if available.

10. Most importantly HAVE FUN!!

Page 8: COURAGEOUS CHALLENGE VOLUNTEER PREPARATION GUIDEcourageouschallenge.weebly.com/uploads/6/5/5/4/65541991/... · 2019-11-22 · COURAGEOUS CHALLENGE VOLUNTEER PREPARATION GUIDE Dear

Sample Score Card Be sure that all portions are completed Do not use ash marks Hopefully we will have clickers, assure that they are functioning correctly. Count anyway, even if you have a clicker. Complete the running total at the designated times that will be clearly announced. Fill in the number completed in first and last minute. This is the tie breaker method that will be used if needed.

END NOTES

Thank you for taking the time to study up for Courageous Challenge. Preparation is essential to the running of a strong event. Now let

me share with you why this event is so important to me personally.

At AFM, our mission is the eradication of suicide among veterans; the brave individuals that have fought for the freedoms we enjoy

every day. As an Army Chaplain, I know Many suffer from the invisible wounds of war. It was my own brush with suicide that helped

me understand their need. In 2009, my third son was injured in a fire on my watch. I felt responsible, just as many veterans do that

lose a battle buddy. At times, I felt as if I were suffocating in overwhelming guilt; I crashed mentally, spiritually, and even physically. I

had thoughts of suicide.

Then my oldest son, MaCrae, asked THE QUESTION that saved my life. Immediately I felt a release in my spirit; I could breath. I wasn’t

alone anymore. Someone knew. My son dared to ask THE QUESTION, “Dad are you thinking of suicide.” THAT QUESTION was a turning

point. The hope which had been lost in pain was restored; setting me on a journey, the founding of Armed Forces Mission, and more

than 600 successful suicide interventions since inception.

Intervention Saves Lives! But few people ever ask THE QUESTION. Those that are trained, do! At AFM, we train people to save people.

Our workshops feature world-class curriculum where more than 8,000 community caregivers have gained skills to courageously

intervene for others.

AFM provides Donors, Volunteers, and Advocates a platform to eradicate suicide and transform lives. If you haven’t already taken the

training we invite you to do so. On September 10th and again in October we will offer the I Will Intervene Challenge featuring the

Listen Learn Lead curriculum. I invite you to take the training that is helping individuals find an authentic power to choose life,

whether veteran, law enforcement, teen or whoever is hurting and at risk. We also invite you to support the mission financially; so

that all people at risk can realize their hope once again!

Thank you so much for your Volunteer support. Together we will turn the tide on suicide and build a culture of community health in

the Southern Crescent!

Let’s have a great day!

Ken
