Counterfeit Medicines Kill Unsuspecting Patients

• No consensus on number of patients killed each year from

counterfeit medicines …

• Between 100,000 and 1,00,000 (Newsweek, 2014)

• More than 1,000,000 (Interpol, 2013)

• More than 100,000 (Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies, 2014)

• More than 700,000 from counterfeit anti-malarial and anti-tuberculosis

medicines (IFPMA, 2016)

• Nearly 450,000 from counterfeit anti-malarials (Malarial Journal, 2014)

• More than 100,000 of them children (American Journal of Tropical Medicine

and Hygiene)

…but even one death is too many


Counterfeits Laced with Powerful Opiate

• Increase in fatal and near-fatal overdoses across US attributed to

counterfeit Xanax laced with Fentanyl (October 2015 to present)

• At least 21 states, including:


California North Carolina

Florida Tennessee

Maryland Washington (State)

• Spreading from college to high school campuses

• Deaths and overdoses also linked to painkillers, such as

OxyContin and Norco, laced with Fentanyl

As of December 31, 2016, Pfizer provided training to
