Malaysia with its current economic climate coupled with the realisation of globalisation and regional competition in the manufacturing sector, has to quickly review its strategies to remain competitive. The viability of the manufacturing industry and sustaining a formidable growth and profitability depends on its manufacturing best practices and strategies on cost reduction activities. This course is designed to provide an overview of current manufacturing practices and areas that result in losses generated from the various resources such as human capital, utilities, materials and machines.

CONTENTS

FMM Institute

avoidance? ⇒ Business climate in Malaysia and issues

faced ⇒ Comparisons against other companies in

US and Japan on their structure of production costs

• Types of Losses ⇒ Losses from 4M (Man, Machine, Materials

and Process Methods) ⇒ Administrative and management losses ⇒ Layout losses ⇒ Quality losses ⇒ Inventory management ⇒ Safety

• Cost Management and Analysis ⇒ Approaches of cost measurements ⇒ How to measure manufacturing efficiency ⇒ What is your benchmark?

monitoring (MTBF, MTTR) ⇒ Culture of My Machine My Responsibility • Continuous Improvement Activities ⇒ Kobetsu Kaizen and SG activities and

measurements ⇒ Doing things right the first time and always • Material Management ⇒ Vendor selections and evaluations (SMART) ⇒ Material cost management and monitoring ⇒ Outsourcing vs in-house ⇒ Dual sourcing ⇒ Raw material management • Key Performance Indicators ⇒ Cost reduction indicators and tracking ⇒ Training and retraining - skilled workforce • Conclusions ⇒ Moving forward with technological changes ⇒ The challenges ahead on meeting the

targets ⇒ Where can we go wrong? ⇒ Team spirit

Mr Konasaigran Alagan holds a master’s degree from New Zealand. He has since worked in the local university embarked on research projects funded by the International Tin Council. He left in 1985 to join a leading multi-national glass manufacturer and over the past twenty-five years he has worked in the production encompassing productivity/process improvements, safety, TPM, waste elimination activities, quality, warehousing, procurement and in the last six years in human resource. His experience in human resource covers the acquisition and merger of an eastern culture-based company into western management practices.
