You may notice this catalog seems lighter than the last one. That is because it is focused on the professional, corporate and workplace programs we offer that can increase your business skills and effectiveness, enhance your supervisory or management techniques, or help you be safer on the job. We did this in response to feedback from some of you at the firms and organizations in our district who expressed difficulty at finding the business education and training among all the pages of “fun,” swim and artistic learning experiences also included in the previous catalogs.

Don’t worry – we have not dropped the fun courses. Here at Corporate & Community Learning, we still have a complete array of personal enrichment classes and workshops to stay healthy, have fun, and try new hobbies or lifestyle experiences. These courses still include something for everyone, regardless of age. Now, however, they are in a separate catalog mailed to households. And, if you would also like to see them, you can find an online, searchable version at the bottom of our webpage at www.lc.edu/ccl. Click on the catalog view that is titled “Community Learning.”

IRS Tax Preparer’s Exam Prep CourseBe ready for your season! As of 2011,the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is requiring successful completion of their new exam in order to become a paid tax preparer. This three day class taught by a CPA Instructor since 1997 teaches the topics included in Test 1 as required by the IRS. Each day of class is composed of six hours of instruction and two hours of pre–testing regarding the U.S. Individual Income Tax Returns and approximately 45 associated tax forms. Flagger – Highway Work Zone SafetyThis course will focus on a review of the standards established by the National Safety Council and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Emphasis is placed on individual flagger requirements regarding at–risk worker training and responsibilities. Topics of discussion include, but are not limited to, advance warning areas, transition areas, activity areas and termination areas of work zones. On–site outdoor training examples are used to illustrate the proper selection, set up and use of temporary traffic control devices. This 4–hour course is designed to satisfy Federal, State and Local flagger certification requirements. Photovoltaic Design& InstallationThis 32–hour course provides an introduction to the basic principles of photovoltaic (solar) design, installation guidelines, and safety issues involved with photovoltaic power systems. Student technicians will learn the basics of sizing a residential battery–less grid–tied system, wire sizing, over–current protection and grounding, and review fundamental design criteria for off–grid stand–alone systems including specifying batteries, controllers, and battery–based inverters. HealthcareProvider CPRThis American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course is intended for healthcare professionals, or students enrolled in a health–related career program. CPR includes adult, child and infant one– and two–rescuer CPR; rescue breathing for the adult, child and infant using a bag–valve–mask device; use of an AED; and management of a conscious and unconscious adult, child or infant who is choking. Participants must complete a skills practicum and earn a score of 84% or better on a written exam to successfully complete the course and to receive an American Heart Association Healthcare Provider completion card (valid for 2 years). Grid TiePhotovoltaic DesignThis 32–hour course presents competencies and expected outcomes for advanced photovoltaic (solar panel) design and grid tied installations. Participants apply the standards presented in the National Electric Code (NEC) as they perform grid interface calculations, ground considerations and wire sizing. Students will perform evaluations of a photovoltaic system under various operating systems. Participants will also develop skills in evaluating batteries, their sizing, charge controllers and hybrid systems. Intro to WeatherizationHaving the skills to make a home more energy efficient will help both the home owner who has paid for past energy losses, as well as the contractor who can use these new green energy skills as another tool in their remodeling kit. In this hands–on weatherization class, participants will learn to perform blower door and depressurization tests, and will practice installing weatherization materials in a house. Healing Touch Level 1 Creating healing relationships through Healing Touch, Level 1 is the first level of Healing Touch (HT) which can progress toward a certificate of completion in HT. If desired, after obtaining a certificate of completion an individual may apply for Certification. HT is an energy therapy utilizing non–invasive techniques to support and facilitate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health, and self–healing in individuals. HT is endorsed by the American and the Canadian Holistic Nurses Associations. This class allows persons with varying backgrounds to enter, acknowledge their previous leanings and to further develop concepts and skills in energy–based therapy. We will explore energy system concepts related to health, the basics of the human energy system including the energy field, energy centers, and their location and functions. The class also includes learning techniques for centering and maintaining energy flow, assessment of the energy field and energy centers, and principals and practice of HT. Specific HT interventions will be discussed and experienced.
