Hot Glass!P R E P A R E T O B E B L O W N A W AY

Bet you can’t go an entire day without relying on glass for something. It’s everywhere! And it’s used for just about everything! But just when you

think you’ve seen it all, someone comes along and finds an entirely new way to use it. Maybe that’s why America’s Crystal City is so dazzling.

For over 150 years, glass has been at the heart of Corning and Steuben Glass has been made by hand right here since 1903. You’ll find boutiques and galleries specializing in exquisite glass art, as well as studios, like Hands-On Glass Studio, where children as young as two can blow their very own glass ornaments; or Vitrix Hot Glass Studio, where you can watch glass as it’s transformed into something magical while you shop.

There’s the world-renowned Corning Museum of Glass, where you’ll find the most extensive collection of historic and art glass in the world. It’s one of those places you have to see to believe. In addition to housing over 45,000 items, including pieces dating back to the time of the Pharaohs, the museum offers visitors the chance to watch master glassblowers create original pieces, then to make their very own one-of-a-kind works of art in one of the daily workshops. In addition to having one of the largest museum shops in the U.S., there’s a special Innovation Center where you can bend light, bend glass, and bend your imagination!

I was blown away by the art I saw at The Corning Museum of Glass. I was amazed by the objects people were able to make with glass, a material that is all around me in my daily life, that I never realized held such poten-tial for beautiful, innovative works of art. To create my own piece of glass and be a part of that was a wonderful way to experience the glass making process hands-on and it is something I will never forget.”

—Alyce Sustko, Hagerstown, MD

Generally speaking, I am not a fan of museums. Too often they seem stuffy, pretentious, and dull. And so, when I recommend one it’s pretty special, and when I tell you that The Corning Museum of Glass is a place where I wish I could have spent more time, it’s quite a ringing endorsement. I LOVED it! . . . It’s seriously that cool.”

Cool Lakes!T H E R E ’ S S O M E T H I N G A B O U T W AT E R

One of the best things about water is the many different ways you

can enjoy it! All you need to do is witness one majestic sunset on Keuka Lake to know just how relaxing the experience can be, whether you’re taking an evening sail, laughing with friends along the shore at a cottage, or strolling in Depot park. But water’s exciting too! It’s the rush of slicing across waves on jet skis or landing a prize bass.

Nestled at the southern tip of Keuka Lake, the village of Hammondsport still maintains the small-town charm that has made it a tourist destina-tion since the late 1800s. And, with its quaint shops, wonderful restaurants, numerous events and festivals, excellent wineries, and breath-taking views, it’s no wonder!

Two top lakes are Keuka Lake, a pristine Y-shaped body of water, and Seneca Lake, the deepest and second longest of the group; both are widely regarded as the most beautiful of the Finger Lakes.”

—Editors of Sherman’s Travel on “the World’s Top 10 Lakeside Retreats”

“Keuka makes you want to linger more than any of the other lakes . . . maybe because it’s most visible from the road and offers several places to pull off and take pictures or smooch for awhile.”

Superb Wines!

Sure, wine can be quiet and sophisticated and saved for

special moments. But it can also be laugh-out-loud fun, enjoyed on the most ordinary of days. One visit to the Finger Lakes, second largest wine region in the country, and you’ll realize that wine, with its many styles and flavors, is a drink suited for every taste, for every occasion.

Here’s just a little about the wineries in Hammondsport, which have been winning awards around the world for over 140 years:

bully Hill Vineyards was founded by a Renaissance man, so it’s no wonder the winery is one of the most eclectic in the Finger Lakes, with its pop art museum, cooper’s museum, two gift shops, excellent restaurant, wine shop, and tastings that embody Walter Taylor’s philosophy of “wine with laughter!”

With an old estate winery feel, not to mention an over 400-year-old family recipe for champagne straight from the Loire Valley where owner Patrice DeMay was

busy establishing itself for its unique approach with hybrids, focusing on making small batches of quality wines. Recently, the winery entered eight wines in the Governor’s Cup and took home seven medals.

pleasant Valley Wine Company and Great Western Winery offers visitors a glimpse of the rich history of one of the oldest wineries in the Finger Lakes and the first bonded winery in the U.S., with a wonderful guided tour of eight historic buildings, plus sherry and champagne caves, not to mention delightful tastings.

ravines Wine Cellars, a small boutique winery on the eastern slopes around Keuka Lake, specializes in dry, food-friendly, elegant wines made in the traditional French style. Trained in Montpelier and apprenticed in Bordeaux, France, owner-winemaker, Morten Hallgren has been turning heads and drawing rave reviews since opening the winery in 2003.

born into a family of winemakers, Château renaissance Wine Cellars offers an intimate winery experience. One you won’t want to miss.

Long associated with the New York wine revolution, Dr. Konstantin Frank Vinifera Wine Cellars has been New York State’s most award-winning winery for over 40 years and was recently nominated by Wine Enthusiast magazine for “American Winery of the Year.” Of course, the best part about a visit to Dr. Frank’s is the wine!

Heron Hill Winery, named one of the 10 most spectacular tasting rooms in the world by Travel & Leisure magazine, has live music every weekend from Memorial Day through October, a quaint café, scenic views, and award-winning wines. Wonderful for destination weddings or fun days wine tasting with friends.

Finger Lakes white wines can stand toe-to-toe with the best of Napa and Sonoma and, surprisingly, their reds are starting to have much more complexity. . . . Add majestic scenery, where rolling farmland rolls down to the blue waters of these long glacial lakes, and you have the perfect fall getaway. . . .”

—Steve Jermanok, EverettPotter.com

Finger Lakes’ wines deserve to be on the world’s best wine lists. . . . Though it boasts over 100 wineries, the region isn’t yet as famous as it deserves to be. . . . While Riesling is the Finger Lakes’ flagship grape varietal, the area is one of the most viticulturally diverse in the world.”

—Hope Philbrick, Where2NowMag.com

Wine lovers should raise their glass in thanks to Dr. Konstantin Frank who ignited the ‘Vinifera Revolution,’ a movement that changed the course of wine growing in the United States.”

Art may not be necessary for living, but it sure can add to

the experience! It allows us to see the world in remarkable ways and, in doing so, to truly see ourselves.

Year after year, Corning is voted one of the “Top 25 Small-City Arts Destinations in the U.S.” by readers of AmericanStyle magazine. With a world-class museum like The Corning Museum of Glass that seems understandable. But there are other remarkable venues for art, like the rockwell Museum of Western art which houses the finest

museums. There’s live theatre, literary

readings, and annual arts festivals like The palettes of Keuka, where visitors can view, vote on, and buy unique paintings over the course of three months as a way of support-ing the arts in the local community while enjoying the scenic vistas of the Finger Lakes. There are several art-related hands-on activities, like glass-blowing, clay sculpting, and pottery painting. There’s even a B&B that offers a visiting artisan series where guests have the opportunity to learn new art forms.

collection of Western and Native American Art east of the Mississippi River. There are galleries like West end Gallery, showcasing the work of nationally-recognized regional artists, and Lime berry, where everything is handcrafted by friends or family of the owners—from Navajo art to jewelry to rugs hand-woven by Afghan refugees. There are concerts that feature artists from all over the globe and offer an eclectic representation of musical styles, not to mention the live music to be found weekly at a variety of venues, including wineries, restaurants, and

Imagine building a motorcycle and the V8 engine to power it, then zooming down a sandy beach in Florida

over one hundred miles-an-hour faster than the average car or motorcycle of the time. What do you do once you’ve become the “Fastest Man on Earth?” If you’re like Glenn Curtiss, you take to the air. And then you help aviation soar to new heights by being the first person to fly off water and by holding the first pre-announced flight in America, and by accomplishing many other firsts.

Imagine speaking five languages, then moving to a country where people speak a language you haven’t learned yet. Imagine taking a job picking blueberries just to be around the one thing you know like few others do, then finally being given a chance to show what you know. When you visit Dr. Konstantin Frank Vinifera Wine Cellars in Hammondsport, you’ll do more than taste great wine, you’ll learn about it and about a man who helped revolutionize the wine industry in the U.S.

But the best way to learn about all the remarkable people who have left their mark on the area and beyond, as well as the incredible things that have happened

here, is by experiencing them yourself. Visit our wonderful historic sites and enjoy the many unique

festivals and annual events, like Whingblinger, Genundowa, and the Seaplane Homecoming,

which celebrate the rich history of Corning & the Finger Lakes.

Scenic GolfFor most of us, a typical round of golf isn’t about earning a paycheck, so the

most important aspects are good company, a good score, and a beautiful course. We can’t do much about your score, though we do have PGA Teaching Professionals who would be happy to help you work on your game. But bring your friends and we’ll provide a backdrop of tree-covered rolling hills and a variety of courses that offer panoramic holes full of challenging shots and breathtaking beauty.

F arms & Farm Markets

Agriculture abounds in Steuben County. Visitors have a number

of interesting opportunities beyond simply enjoying the best of local harvest. There are cider mills, maple farms, berry patches, and farms where you’ll find honey and cheese; some that even offer interactive experiences, from watching lambs being born to petting alpacas. Not to mention the small shops where you can buy alpaca fiber and fiber products. There are emus and ostriches as well as chances to learn about herbs and their many uses. And if you really want to find out what

being a farmer is like, you can even stay on a working farm, help with chores, learn to bake bread, and more.

There’s nothing quite like hiking a trail with the sunlight cascading

through the trees and a backpack slung over your shoulders to get a real feel for the natural beauty of Corning & the Finger Lakes. Unless, maybe, you’re pedaling along the scenic byways that connect one small town to another, or one state park to another; unless you’re canoeing downstream or kayaking on a pristine lake; unless you’re riding high in the saddle as you wind your way along some woodland trail or you’re four-wheeling it through mud holes and up hillsides. It’s there in the heart of the countryside where you’ll find breathtaking views you just can’t see from the busy interstate. And once you’ve experienced the great outdoors for yourself, there’s a good chance you won’t want to see the world any other way.

It’s there in the heart of the countryside where you’ll find breaktaking views...

New York’s Finger Lakes region is perfect for fall foliage hedonists—it’s the ultimate autumn experience. The vineyards are tinted in shades of tangerine, saffron, and amethyst, the deep blue lakes are cradled between outrageously colorful hills, waterfalls pour down rocky crevices, and there are terrific restaurants and wonderful little inns.” —Fodor’s

Geocaching and Letterboxing are two awesome ways to explore the world.

Think “treasure hunting,” only without the worry of being stranded on a deserted island or of having to walk the plank. You get clues about where a cache is located, including GPS coordinates, but it’s up to you to find it. And you never really know what you’re going to find.

Not only do geocaching and letterboxing offer adventure, they’re also great ways to connect with people from around the world.

There’s the rush you get from the sense of discovery, but there’s also an element of secrecy as the caches and boxes are carefully hidden in state parks, along hiking trails, in the middle of rivers, even in downtown historic districts. Are you up for a little adventure?

Letterboxing attracts a diverse following. Families appreciate the outdoor activity and bonding experience. . . . Artistic types delight in carving the stamps, handcrafting logbooks and creating distinctive boxes. . . . Although some instructions offer fairly straightforward directions, puzzle addicts love the challenge of solving and creating clues replete with clever puns, math formulas and other riddles.” —Deirdre Van Dyk, Time Magazine

River AdventuresFishing is one of those pastimes

where you immerse yourself in the moment and sort of let go of the rest of your crazy life for a while. It’s a great way to relax. It’s also a great way to get the heart thumping once a fish hits the other end of the line. And if angling’s your thing, you’ll want to check out the wonderful waterways in Corning & the Finger Lakes, like the Chemung, Canisteo, Conhocton, and Tioga Rivers which make up the Chemung Basin River Trail, not to mention our many streams, small lakes like Waneta, Lamoka, and Loon, as well as pristine Keuka Lake where you’ll find trout, bass, landlocked salmon, and more.

But you don’t have to fish to get out on the water and explore. With launch sites in nine Steuben County communities located along the Chemung Basin River Trail, there are miles of breathtaking scenery to be experienced as you paddle your canoe or kayak, and many chances to see bald eagles, heron, foxes, beaver, bears, and other native wildlife.

It’s no secret that Steuben County is the place to be

when it comes to hunting! Find out for yourself why we’ve been called New York’s #1 Deer County.

Year after year, more whitetail deer are harvested in Steuben County than in any other county in the state. You’ll also find an abundance of wild tur-key and other game birds, as well as black bear.

The perennial chart-topper, of course, is Steuben County...” which has “about 30,000 acres of public-hunting areas that are worth exploring.”

W inter EscapesIn some places Winter is defined as

the coldest season of the year, with the shortest days and longest nights. In Corning & the Finger Lakes, winter is defined as a whole other kind of cool!

Snowmobiling, Ice-Fishing, Tobogganing, Cross-Country Skiing, Snow-Shoeing, Skating, are just some of the ways you can turn those short days and long nights into flat out fun!
