Did you know? Organ and tissue donation af-fords men and women aunique opportunity to help oth-ers. Although the laws vary de-pending on where a personlives, many persons age 18 orolder can indicate their desireto be organ donors. Youngerpeople must have a parent orguardianʼs consent. Physicalcondition will dictate if a per-son can donate, although peo-ple with a previous medicalcondition may still be suitabledonors. According to theUnited States Department ofHealth and Human Services, each organ and tissue donorhas the potential to save or im-prove the lives of as many as50 people. Organs and tissueseligible for donation includethe heart, pancreas, lungs, liver, kidneys, intestines, cornea, skin, connective tis-sues, and bone marrow, among others. In the UnitedStates, donors can registerwith a state donor registry ordesignate their decisions ontheir driverʼs licenses. Canadi-ans can visit beadonor.ca toregister to become organdonors.

Did you know? Though laughter is often referred to as “the best medicine,” nodefinitive study has been conducted to determine the effects oflaughter on overall human health, leaving open the possibility thatmaintaining a good sense of humor and a positive attitude arejust as important, if not more important, than finding time to laugheach day. But even if laughter is not medicinal, its benefits canmimic those of exercise. When a person laughs, his or her pulseand blood pressure increase, and people tend to breathe fasterwhen they laugh. Faster breathing sends more oxygen to the tis-sues, which can help the heart and lungs work more efficiently. In addition, a Vanderbilt University study found that between 10and 15 minutes of laughter can burn as many as 50 calories.Finding time to laugh may also indirectly improve the bodyʼs im-mune system response, as studies have suggested that infec-tion-fighting antibodies might be more abundant in people whocan use humor to combat stress.

Still Observations presents works that explorethe artistic genre of still-life. Each artist defines the nature andbeauty of everyday objects by capturing different fleeting mo-ments in time. Ganna Halvorsen creates hyper realistic oil paint-ings based upon special effects and photography. Kate Hartleyseeks to create a world of visual poetry using objects from hertravels and watercolor. Lynda Naske delicately captures the mys-tery and beauty of objects using colored pencil and Jeri MacDon-ald takes viewers on a visual journey of draped and entwinedlayers of lace and fabric using ink. The opening reception is ac-companied by a Gallery Talk with participating artists at 5pm, theGallery Talk is a great opportunity for visitors to learn about theartistsʼ work and ask questions. The opening reception also fea-tures live music by local musician Kim Skoll and refreshments.Still Observations will be on view in Lapham Gallery, January 16- February 13, 2015. HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER IS AS CLOSE AS YOUR LIBRARYCAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designedto help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD fea-tures students from first through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stut-tering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stutteringsometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action:The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundationis available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contactthe Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.orgor www.tartarmudez.org.

HOW TO PURCHASE YOUR FIRST HOME IN 2015(NAPSI)—The American dream of homeownership may not be as hard to attain as many peopleseem to fear. A few intriguing facts and hints can help. The FactsWhile existing home sales have risen recently, the National Association of Realtorsʼ annual Profileof Home Buyers and Sellers found that the share of first-time buyers recently fell to its lowest level(33 percent) in nearly three decades. Many first-time buyers experience obstacles on the path to homeownership, including difficulty sav-ing for a down payment and tight credit conditions. The HintsConsider these tips:• Find and work with an expert Realtor who knows the neighborhood. Nothing can replace the localknowledge and real insight that professional Realtors can provide to first-time buyers as they nav-igate the complex home buying process.According to the Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, while most home buyers in the past yearbegan their home search online, 90 percent ended up purchasing their home through an agent.Realtors are not only the source of online real estate data, they also use their unparalleled localmarket knowledge and resources to help close the deal for buyers and sellers.• Meet with a lender to determine how much you can afford. Last year, the median price a first-timebuyer spent on a home was $169,000. Chances are, you donʼt have that amount of cash lyingaround. Thatʼs why 95 percent of first-time buyers who bought a home in the past year financedtheir purchase.Find out what you can afford with a preapproval from a lender. A lender will check your credit history, current debt obligations and other expenses to determine the amount of money youʼre qualified toborrow at a specific interest rate. Donʼt forget to consider the other costs of homeownership, suchas taxes, insurance and utilities.• Identify your housing wish list. Although 46 percent of first-time buyers got a single-family homein the suburbs, you may prefer a condo in an urban environment near public transportation.Regardless of your preferences, identifying and sharing your wish list can help your Realtor focuson the right home for you, scan listings and connect with those who represent sellers to zero in onhomes for sale that meet your budget and criteria.Keep this advice in mind and you may soon find yourself waking up in the home of your dreams.

A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

(NAPSI)—When it comes to pinpointing potentially serious is-sues with your vehicle, your nose may know more than you re-alize. For example, the smell of burnt toast might be a sign ofan electrical short. The smell of rotten eggs may signal troublewith the emissions system, which includes the catalytic con-verter.

These and other tips are included in “Knowledge Is Power,” abooklet thatʼs part of a car-care and maintenance clinic devel-oped by ACDelco. It gives vehicle owners easy-to-understandinformation about their vehicles so they can be informed andmake the right choices when they visit an independent autoservice center.

Here are some things you may not know about your vehicle:

• Reddish stains on the driveway can be a sign of a transmis-sion oil leak.

• If your technician asks if your vehicleʼs brakes are “grabbing,”he wants to know if the brakes engage suddenly when youapply steady pressure to the brake pedal.

• You should pull over immediately if your temperature lightreads in the hot zone. That probably means your vehicleʼscoolant is too hot to cool your engine.

• Many brake pads have wear indicators. If your vehicle hasthem, they will emit loud squeals when they detect wear.

• Itʼs a good idea to write down your vehicleʼs symptoms beforevisiting a repair shop, including noises—and whether theseoccur when the engine is hot or cold.

• Air bags work with your safety belts, not as a replacement forthem.

• Children under 13 should ride properly secured in the rearseat.

• Always keep at least a half tank of gas in your vehicle to avoidpotential damage to your fuel filter or fuel line.

• Check your tire pressure frequently for safety and fuel econ-omy. Hot and cold outside temperatures affect the pressure inyour tires.

• Avoid oil and fuel additives unless recommended by your ser-vice consultant.

• Donʼt use dish detergent to wash your car; it can hurt clearcoatfinishes.
