What are the core concepts?

‘ A mathematic concept is a metacognitive understanding or it is the PICTURE you form in your head about an object or word’ lecture 1

For example: What picture do you get in your head about 5 + 3 = 8 ??

During this operation, they form new relationships and discover different ways of working with numbers.

Addition concept

Addition could be described in various ways.- Addition is the sum of all things added

together- A way of putting things together

Subtraction conceptThere are 3 types of subtraction

• Take away… “ I had 6 bananas and I ate 2. How many do I have left?”

• Difference or comparison… “ I have 2 bananas and you have 5 bananas. How many MORE do you HAVE THAN ME?”

• Missing addend… “I have 4 bananas, but I need 8 for all my friends. How many bananas more DO I NEED?”

Multiplication & Division Concepts

“Multiplication is repeated addition where all parts are equal to each other”

“Division is the operation of determining how many times one quantity is contained in the

other; the inverse of multiplication”

What are skills in relation to Operations?

Each concepts can have different skills associated with them. Some skills are:

• Maths language• Rainbow numbers• Place value charts• Materials language

What are different strategies that can be used?

These are different and efficient ways to approach teaching operations in mathematcis.

• It is a way of processing information e.g mental

• Algorithms• Understanding relationships of numbers• Practicing methodsThese are without pencils, paper or calculators.
