With Contiki you’re guaranteed to get more included in your trip. We also save you time & money. Time, because we take the hassle out of travel (like including flights to get you there faster). Your trip, your way.We all travel for different reasons. Want an in-depth cultural experience, but want time to relax & take it easy? Or want to get the adrenalin pumping? You can do it all. We make sure there’s plenty of free time to create your own adventure, so you can do what you want. Use it to relax, check out a football game, or get up to some more adventurous stuff like hiking or speed boating in Iguassu. We’ve put together an inspirational range of Explore More things to do, to help you get more out of your trip. You can do as few or as many as you like. See p.12-13 for more.

When you travel, you want to get the real, local experience. Eating where the locals eat, dancing the Tango or Samba, or exploring the back streets of Buenos Aires by bike. We’ll really get you under the skin of the countries we visit. Our team live in South America, so they’re perfect for giving you access to real, local experiences. The insider knowledge of our expert Local Guides complements our Tour Managers perfectly with their in-depth knowledge of our amazing destinations. More on p.10.

Live it local.

Our accommodation in South America really sets us apart. You’ll sleep easy - our hotel accommodation is clean, comfy twin-share hotels (or single rooms for a little extra), with each spot being specially chosen based on its charm, location & facilities. There’s no pitching of tents & rolling out mattresses, or bunking in with a group of other people – it’s all about comfort so you can really relax. We also give you some extra special experiences, like our jungle lodge in the Amazon where you’ll sleep amongst the luscious rainforest. See p.8 for more.

Fantastic overnights.

On our tours, the maximum group size is around 30 people, so it’s the perfect size for discovering South America. There’s plenty of new mates to be made, but not too many, so it’s great for easily getting around the places we visit.

Small groups.

Our accommodation means you’ll sleep in comfort. It’s what makes us unique.Rooms are twin-share & well located hotels are key, so you’re amongst the action in the places that count. Like in Rio & Buzios in Brazil, we’re close to the beach & in Arequipa & Cusco in Peru we’re next to the city’s main square. They have great facilities too, like pools & bars, so you can indulge in a Pisco Sour or Caipirinha – it’s about comfort, the best facilities & getting a great nights sleep. We also like to keep it local with some authentic experiences like our Amazon Rainforest Special Stay to give you a taste of something different.

Our other accommodation experiences are unique, cute & refl ect the surroundings that you’re visiting, like a colonial era hotel in Cusco. It’s all about great overnights that are characteristic of the places we visit.

Amazon Special StayNestled in the jungle & built from cane, natural woods & clay, our rainforest eco-lodge Special Stay is a truly one-of-a-kind experience. Each room features an en-suite & open-walls, leaving you sleeping virtually amongst the luscious rainforest. With the soft glow of candles & lanterns, it’s a great place to relax & chill.

Note: The accommodation mentioned is by no means a defi nitive list of all our accommodation, which can vary on occasions. Some South American hotels can be smaller & less equipped in comparison to some other Western countries & the standard, style & location of hotel can vary from region to region. Check your Contiki Travel Documents for accommodation confi rmation.

Going solo? We don’t charge single supplements for solo travellers. We’ll match you with a same-sex room-mate, or if you want, you can always opt for the privacy of your own room for a little extra – it’s up to you.

TasteSouthAmericaSucculent Argentinian steak, sizzling Brazilian BBQ’s & delicious fresh Peruvian ceviche... Experience the unique fl avours of South America...

One of the best things about South America is food. The different fl avours, tastes, aromas & regional specialities are what make each place so unique.

To make sure you get a taste of it all, we include lots of meals in your tour price, like breakfast every day & around half your evening meals. But we don’t include every meal (especially lunches) so you can go exploring & go local, whilst having the independence to do what you want, in your budget.

We’ve included some extra special meals in our prices, like a Tango show, complete with dinner & drinks & a Brazilian BBQ – where you’ll indulge in succulent beef & chicken roasted over an open fi re.

There’s some other great meals at local spots in the tour prices too, so you can really get a taste for the places you visit. Think mouth-watering Argentinian steak in Buenos Aires, delicious local fi sh in Puno & feijoada washed down with an ice-cold Caipirinhain Rio.

No matter what your tastes, you’ll love what we serve up. If you’ve got any special dietary requirements or restrictions just tell your Tour Manager at the start of your tour.

What’s better than an amazing holiday in South America? Having the best people possible taking you on the adventure of a life time. People that know the places we visit like the locals. And the locals themselves! Meet Brent, our man in South America.“Even after nearly 10 years of living in South America, I still wander the streets & imagine the different feeling of the eras gone by. South America is my passion.

What’s the best thing for me? Presenting a new culture in a fantastic place – something new that people can really be a part of. It’s about the people. They’re amazingly welcoming & want you to be involved. They want you to see the best side of their countries & cultures.

As a traveller I yearn to really experience the places I visit, so I know what you’re after. Travelling means something different to everyone, but culture, free time & fun, are all integral parts of anyones journey. Bringing the best of South America to life is what I strive for. Respect for the people, the places & differences in the destinations we visit, is hugely important to me. We’re all about supporting the locals, giving back to the communities we visit, whilst giving you access to the most authentic experiences possible.”

We keep it local too – with our English-speaking Guides, & local suppliers on hand to give that essential local knowledge that you’d expect. They know how to bring South America to life for you through history, knowledge & expertise on the places that count.

Our Team\

Getting around\Say goodbye to 18 hour bus journeys to get you from A to B. On our trips, we include fl ights between some destinations – it’s a great way of getting around. By including fl ights, we get you there faster, so you’ll see & experience more of South America’s hotspots.

We mix it up on our trips - think private buses (so you’re not crammed in with other travellers), vans & boat rides with friends!

A trip to South America wouldn’t be complete without including some fun, local ways to get around too, like triciclos, canoes & cable cars! It’s about comfort, but giving you a taste of how the locals do it. It’s all part of the adventure.

Only Contiki...Includes more\You’ve saved hard & are ready to see South America. So to guarantee you get the most out of your trip we include more. More sightseeing of the important not to miss bits (like Machu Picchu) & the bits off the beaten track. We include more meals, like breakfast every day, plus lots of dinners & some lunches too.

Food is one of the most important parts of any holiday & South America has some seriously delicious food that you’ll love to indulge in. We include breakfast everyday & about half of your evening meals so you can enjoy a tasty Brazilian BBQ & Argentinian beef but still have plenty of time to seek out & discover the local cuisine for yourself, to suit your taste & budget.

Travelling in South America is all about getting up close to the people & places you visit. It’s about indulging in an all round cultural feast, whilst having a great holiday & making new friends along the way. It’s about getting more than just a glimpse of South America, it’s getting up close to the must-see sights & having a great time doing it. Wherever you visit, we’ll line up trips to monuments, cycling tours & some entry fees.

But it’s not about ‘ticking the box’ when you travel with us. Only Contiki includes more exclusive experiences & cool Special Stays, so look out for them beside the map on the tour pages. GOAnd there’s even more value with Contiki. It’s no problem if you’re travelling solo – we won’t charge you any extra & if you want a bit more privacy when you travel then there’s always the option of your own room, for a little extra. We also offer some great discounts, like early booking, booking with mates or past traveller deals.

The Inca Trail Trek Walk in the footsteps of the Incas as you hike to one of the 7 new wonders of the world, Machu Picchu – the Lost City of the Incas. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is Peru’s most famous site, with thousands of travellers wanting to experience the magic of this ancient place for themselves each year.

Trekking with Contiki We’ll take the train to “KM 104” your starting point for Machu Picchu, where we’ll begin your trek with our local professional guide. You’ll experience amazing views of the Andes as you head through the cloudforest & discover wildlife & waterfalls along the way. As you walk along the original stonewalk path, through the Sun Gate you’ll catch your fi rst glimpse of majestic Machu Picchu. There’s time to explore when you reach the site, before heading back to Machu Picchu Pueblo for the night.

For tours that can do the hike seepages 16-17, 18-19, 22-23 & 24-25.

Essential booking requirements When you book your tour (as early in advance as possible) please let us know the following details:

• Your full name (as appears on passport), your date of birth & gender

• Your passport number & date of expiry

• Your nationality

It’s also important that the passport information that you submit with your application is exactly the same as what you will be travelling with in South America. It’s best to play it safe - if your information changes it can result in a fi ne, or cancellation of admission to the trail. No refunds will be given.

The important stuff• Book early! To help preserve Machu

Picchu for future generations, the Peruvian Government closely controls the number of travellers on the trail, with only 500 pre-purchased permits available each day.

• Inca Trail permits are non-refundable & non-changeable so it’s essential that you let us know your correct passport details at the time of booking so we can process your application quickly. Contiki will process your application on your behalf.

To ensure you get your chance to hike the trail, book your spot early. It’s advisable to book at least 3 months before travelling in the low season (between October & April) & 6 months before travelling in the high season (May to September), although it is at times possible to get permits within these timescales. We will process your application within 3 days of booking; we cannot guarantee permit availability.

Our Foundation. We’re founding partners of non-profit The Travel Corporation Conservation Foundation. Our foundation has committed more than US$2 million to help underprivileged communities & support sustainable tourism around the world.

From sponsoring the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards encouraging tourism operators to develop & share sustainable tourism practices globally, to our own special causes such as ocean conservation. Keep reading…

Helping to protect our oceans. Covering 71% of the globe, but with less than 1% under legal protected status, oceans are not immune to human influence. Right now, precious marine ecosystems are being harmed or destroyed completely.

Contiki actively supports 2 projects involved in the critical task of marine protection, including backing young environmentalists in their hands-on work protecting the world’s second largest barrier reef via the Mesoamerican Reef Leadership program. And supporting Oceana’s valuable research work in the Mediterranean.

Learn more at contiki.com.au/responsibletravel.

Recycling. We’re committed to using 100% recycled, chlorine free, FSC paper for our brochure pages, 95% of which is post consumer waste (that’s litter to you & me). Using recycled paper means we’re using less trees, sending less waste to landfills & consuming 1/5th of the energy refining the fibre to make the paper. Between Contiki & our Travel Corporation sister companies, we’re saving over 70,609 trees* a year.

* Calculations provided by the Environmental Defense Fund

Loving it local. We’re proud to support local businesses on our trips, whether it be via the activities we do, the places we eat or the accommodation in which we sleep.

In South America, almost every one of the places we stay are locally owned, so profits feed directly back to the local communities. Where other travel operators may own their own vehicles & run their own show independent of locals, wherever possible, Contiki work only with local suppliers & businesses.

What about you. Taking care of the environment shouldn’t stop when you go travelling. Simple stuff like re-using your drink bottle, choosing products with less packaging, recycling on the go or simply turning off the lights when you leave your hotel room are all ways to lessen your environmental impact.

Got a question?Answers to frequently asked questions & things you need to know:

Do I needvaccinations? At the time this brochure went to press (April 2011) the following immunisations are recommended for travellers in South America by the CDC (The Centre for Disease Control):Travellers should be up to date with their routine vaccinations: Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) Diphtheria/Pertussis/Tetanus (DPT), Poliovirus etc.Recommended for Argentina, Brazil & Peru: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid & Rabies, Malaria & Yellow Fever are also an issue in Puerto Maldonado, Iquitos & Iguassu Falls. You should consult your local doctor or travel agent on what vaccinations &/or preventative medicines would be required. Don’t forget to bring with you any medication that you may require en route such as antihistamines, antibiotics, etc.

Do I need visas?Depending on your nationality, you may require visas to enter certain countries included in your tour. You are fully responsible for obtaining all necessary visas prior to the departure of your tour. Contiki is not legally permitted to knowingly allow anybody who does not have a valid visa to join a tour. Visa & other entry & exit conditions (such as currency, arrival/departure taxes, customs & quarantine regulations) change regularly. Visit contiki.com/visas for more information. Alternatively, consult your travel agent or visit your local embassy to determine which visas you require.Your passport must have at least six months validity at time of travel. Local immigration authorities may deny entry & deport people who do not meet this requirement, even if they intend on staying only for a short period. Important to consider:1. Visas can take up to six weeks & a fee is

normally charged. 2. Failure to obtain all necessary visas could cause

you to miss part of your tour & will result in you incurring considerable expense & inconvenience.

3. It is better to apply for all visas through your travel agent before you leave home.

4. It is very important that the entry & exit dates are correct on the visa. Your travel agent will contact Contiki for full details.

Am I expected to tip on tour?Every country in the world has different tipping policies & in South America within service industries, tipping is common practice. Although it may not be customary to you, it is of considerable significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels. Tipping is optional & only given if you feel the service has exceeded your expectations. Your Tour Manager will assist you with any questions about this. Tips for Local Guides & Drivers are included in the cost of the tour. Be aware that services & standards in South America may not be equivalent to those you find at home. If you think your Contiki team have done an exceptional job than you may wish to tip them. This is entirely discretionary – it’s completely up to you.

How much luggagecan I bring?Baggage is restricted to only one reasonably sized backpack/suitcase & one carry-on bag & luggage policies are strictly enforced. There are some things to consider when packing for a Contiki South America Tour, including leaving space for on trip purchases:

• Due to the large number of flights on Contiki South America tours, your luggage needs to meet the weight & restrictions imposed by airlines. These limits are imposed by the airlines, not by Contiki. Contiki is not responsible for any costs incurred by overweight luggage. Please refer to contiki.com/luggage for more info.

• You are responsible for carrying your own luggage. At times this will be in hotels without elevators (as is common in the region) or on various forms of transport.

• At hotels without elevators there may be porters but this is not guaranteed.

Please keep your luggage to a maximum suitcase size of 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29” x 20” x 10”) & maximum weight of 20kg (44lbs), plus one small handbag / daypack that can be used as an overnight bag for Machu Picchu Pueblo (see below).

IMPORTANT: Every Contiki trip to Peru includes a train journey round trip to Machu Picchu Pueblo where we overnight. Perurail, the train operator, have strict baggage allowances. How much moneydo I need? You will need to ensure you allow enough money to cover optional lunches & dinners, souvenirs, shopping, drinks, optional activities, entrance fees to some attractions & evening entertainment. When travelling within South America, you’ll fi nd that you’ll often be using local currency, particularly in remote areas. The local currencies are the Nuevo Sol (Peru), Peso “Argentino” (Argentina), Real (Brazil). The countries we visit rely largely on cash as opposed to credit cards or travellers cheques. In the larger cities you’ll fi nd that established stores will accept credit cards readily, with VISA as the most readily accepted & normally charging a surcharge. Local market stalls will operate on a cash only basis.Local currency is available through cash (ATM) machines however you shouldn’t depend solely on a credit/debit card for cash as they are not accepted in all areas & ATM maintenance is often neglected. ATM’s are available in Lima, Buenos Aires & Cusco airports. We advise you carry cash in small denominations of both $US & local currency. Please note that travellers cheques are generally only accepted in big cities at money exchanges or banks.

Explore MoreOptional ActivitiesContiki’s Explore More optional activities are all operated by independent third party operators and it is at the clients own risk to participate in such activities whilst on tour. It’s important that you check your insurance includes your participation in adventure activities & be aware that some of our optionals can be physically demanding & therefore involve some risk.

Acceptance of riskIt’s important that you acknowledge that at times travelling on a Contiki South America tour may be more adventurous and presents greater challenges than your normal daily life. The civil infrastructure, medical facilities, transportation, telecommunications & accommodation standards may not be what you are used to, and cleanliness and hygiene standards also vary. As such there is some degree of personal risk inherent in travelling South America and as a Contiki traveller you accept this.

Brochure authenticity We have put a great deal of effort into producing this brochure. The information given & literature produced by Contiki has been compiled with care & is published in good faith. Sometimes, because of circumstances outside our control, we have to alter some activities due to seasonal closing or repairs to buildings, etc, especially early or late in the season. If this happens, alternative activities will be arranged.

Will I get more information?Upon receipt of fi nal payment, your documentation will be released 21 days prior to your departure. Log onto contiki.com/satg for our comprehensive “Travellers Guide” fi lled with all the info you need about South America & your tour. You’ll also receive a comprehensive day-by-day itinerary including full details & costs of all optional activities available on your tour.
