The Nuremberg Christkind

The Christkind is the symbol of Christmas in Nuremberg. With its blond curly hair, wearing a golden crown and gold-and-white gown, it traditionally opens its market with a prologue on the Friday before the first Sunday in Advent. Appearances at the Christkindles- markt, the Children’s Christmas Market and the “Sternenhaus” are part of its regular schedule along with visits to charitable organi- zations. Nuremberg selects a new Christkind for this heavenly office every two years.

THE CHRISTKINDLESMARKT2

The enticing aroma of gingerbread, mulled wine and grilled sausages fills the air at the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt. First mentioned in 1628, its roots probably go back to the time of the Reformation, when the tradition of giving children presents at Christmas evolved. Since then, traditional wares such as handmade Christmas decorations, “Rauschgold” angels and prune men as well as culinary delights have been offered in more than 180 wooden booths with red and white roofs. Take a stroll through the festively lighted lanes and discover the enchantment of this magical atmosphere.

THE CHRISTKINDLESMARKT THE CHRISTKINDLESMARKT 54

The Christkind Opens Its Market

The prologue which the Nuremberg Christkind recites every year at the opening of the Christkindlesmarkt was written in 1948 by Friedrich Bröger. He was the principal dramaturg of the theater and son of the Nuremberg workers’ poet Karl Bröger. The text has been adapted a number of times.

You men and women, who once yourselves were children, You little ones, life’s journey just beginning, Each and all, who troubled tomorrow, are full of cheer today, Pray listen to what Christkind has come to say!

Every year, four weeks before the time, To decorate the Christmas tree, to celebrate the season, Appears upon this square, your forebears knew it too, What you here see, called Christkindlesmarkt by you,

This little town within the town, of wood and cloth made, Whose short-lived splendor so fleeting seems to be, And yet it is eternal. My market shall forever young remain. As long as Nuremberg stands, and the memory of that market’s fame.

For Nuremberg is both old and young at once, The many features of its countenance beyond all count. Here this noble square. But now adjoining it, The tall buildings of today, the factories of the modern world The new city of so much green. And yet, you men and women true It will remain forever the Nuremberg that is you.

Now as the old year ends there comes the day, When wishes can be made and presents given, When the market shines forth far and wide, With decorations, and crystal balls, and blessed Christmastime This you may not forget, you men and women, heed my word, He who has all needs nothing more, There are the children of this world and poor,

Who know the best what giving’s for. You men and women, who once yourselves were children, Be them again today, happy as children be, And now the Christkind to its market calls, And all who come are truly welcome.

Gold Foil Angels

The World of the Prune Men

It glitters and glistens, traditionally has no arms, but is the quint- essence of the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt and can be found here in all sizes – the Nuremberg gold foil angel. According to legend, a Nuremberg doll maker made it for his sick daughter.

An origin in the 16th century is more likely: At that time, the thinly beaten brass used to make them was called “Rauschgold”, because of the whispering sound it made.

Zwetschgenmännle – the well-loved figures made of prunes – have been sold at the Christkindlesmarkt for decades. More than 350 different figures are available. The figures are 9 to 22 centimeters high and are in illustrious company on the shelves of the stalls where they’re sold.

Heavenly – A Christmas Market just for Children!

At Hans-Sachs-Platz , a beautifully lit nostalgic two-tiered carousel, a mini Ferris wheel and a steam railway make their rounds. Lovingly decorated little house with themes such as Christmas baking, candle making or holiday crafts invite children to a hands-on experience. Each Sunday, there is special entertainment for kids. If you’d like to make Christmas wishes come true for an underprivileged child, there’s a “Gift Givers‘ Tree” to help.

The Toy Museum will present the exhibit “Those Were the Days! Fabulous Toys for 20 Cents.”

Children’s Theater and More

In the festively decorated Sternenhaus, right next to the Children’s Christmas Market, little ones can enjoy a magical children’s cultural program each afternoon. Fairy tales and stories, children’s operas, musicals, ballet, magic shows and special productions from the local children’s theater scene are all on the program.

Most performances are in German, but for many language skills are not necessary.

Lantern Procession to the Castle

Year after year an atmospheric event, sponsored by NÜRNBERGER Versicherung: More than 1,300 Nuremberg school children carrying ”light artworks” make their way from the Market Square past the Christkindlesmarkt and up to the castle. There the Christmas story is told as a live nativity play.

This year is the 71st anniversary of the Lantern Procession.

Sustainability at the Christkindlesmarkt

To promote regional business cycles, many of the wares are made by traditional regional manufacturers. Even the stalls are made of regional spruce and are used as long as possible; more than 30 stalls still date back to 1890

The Christkindlesmarkt is supplied with regenerative energy from regional hydroelectric and photovoltaic power plants from N-ERGIE, the local utility. The holiday illumination at the market is from LED lights, which use much less electricity.

All beverage stands work with a reusable cup system. The mugs are centrally washed at a modern and efficient station located next to the market, saving energy and avoiding waste.

The Organic Metropolis Nuremberg was the first German city to join the organic city network “Città del BIO”, in December 2006. Since then, the city supports organic companies and food producers. At public appearances, the Christkind distributes chocolates made from organic fresh-hay milk and Fairtrade cocoa.

The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt not only places the greatest importance on offering traditional wares, but also on sustainable development. Environmental considerations as well as social and economic aspects are all taken into account.

The Biggest Punchbowl in the World

Winter Warmer – Brewed for the Winter

Nuremberg, like no other city in Germany, stands for culinary delicacies. While gingerbread is at its peak during the Christmas season, the finger-sized grilled sausages are eaten all year long. Equally worth trying is a crackling pork shoulder (Schäufele) with a dumpling (Kloß) or a Franconian carp (Karpfen). A glass of Franconian wine or a cool beer are an enjoyable pairing with the regional specialties.

But not only traditional Franconian cuisine finds its way to your plate in Nuremberg. Gourmet establishments and restaurants with star ratings treat their guests to innovative dishes and exceptional food combinations. Fresh regional products are the norm, mostly sourced from the local market gardens of Knoblauchsland. In addition, the best organic quality can be found on the menu of many restaurants. No wonder, because Nuremberg is an organic metropolis.

A glowing cauldron, brilliant flames and the scent of red wine, cinnamon and cloves drifts through the air to meet the amazed crowds. Next to the Fleischbrücke, directly on the River Pegnitz is where hot red wine and rum are brewed in the largest punch bowl in the world. Visitors from all over the world gather to watch this amazing show and to enjoy a warm cup of punch in the glow of the fire.

The hot Winter Warmer, at Booth No.142 , warms body and soul with every sip.

The Altstadthof Brewery has created the first modern Nuremberg spiced beer. The WinterWarmer is a composition of malt, hops and a special mix of nine select spices, reviving an ancient medieval brew with a one-of-a-kind taste.

Hot Tip: Nuremberg Mulled Wine Gerstacker Wines

It’s the local favorite among Nuremberg’s Christmas specialties: blueberry mulled wine. It tastes particularly good because it is made of pure blueberry wine and the very best ingredients, including aniseed, cinnamon, cloves and other spices - the high-light of every visit to the Christkindlesmarkt during the Advent season.

Nuremberg’s location at the crossing of the most important medieval trading routes made it renowned as “The City of Spi-ces”. Thanks to an imperial commission to “develop specialties” “spiced wine”– a wine mixed with various spices – was created and developed by patrician and merchant families. After the boom years of the 1960s, “Nuremberg Mulled Wine” became protected under EU law in the early 1990s. Today it is offered and marketed internationally by four large renowned producers.

A special recommendation is the red and white winemaker’s mulled wine at Booth No. 44 with its especially harmonious blend of spices. Here, you can drink a STERNE®-GLÜHWEIN (organic and vegan) from a choice Tempranillo wine. It has been created by the well-known chefs at the famous restaurant Essig-brätlein in Nuremberg, who have received two Michelin stars, especially for their work with flavors and aromas. Extracts from typical Nuremberg gingerbread spices, bourbon vanilla and fruit and extracts of oak wood make the mulled wine a one-of-a-kind taste experience. Or you might want to try a Christkindles® alcohol-free Children’s Punch (made from an age-old secret recipe) or the full-bodied blueberry mulled wine or roasted apple punch. All of these delicious products come from the traditional GERSTACKER winery in Nuremberg, which is now led by the third generation of the family and closely tied to the name of Nuremberg. Many other interesting winter and summer products are available not only in Germany, but also throughout Europe, the US and in Asia.

A Little Treat with Big Flavor Ein echtes Original auf dem Markt

Nuremberg Rostbratwurst – A small but hearty treat

A true Nuremberg sausage is only seven to nine centemeters long and weighs just 20 to 25 grams. But these little sausages pack a lot of flavor. Nuremberg grilled sausages are an absolute must when strolling across the Christkindlesmarkt or through the Old Town. The consistency and size of today’s pork sausage was laid down back in the 14th century. There are many legends about why the sausages are so small. Today, size, weight and recipe are protected by EU law, guaranteeing the quality and tradition of this small symbol of the town.

This Nuremberg delicacy – which is traditionally grilled over a beechwood fire – is served as 6, 8, 10 or 12 sausages on a pewter plate, traditionally enjoyed with a side dish of sauerkraut or potato salad, mustard or horseradish (Kren) and coarse rye bread.

The well-known sausages served as “Three in a Bun” (Drei im Weggla) are found on almost every corner - and not only during Advent.

That’s How They Taste Best!

Altstadthof Brewery

Original Nuremberg bratwurst – whether “three in a bun” or “two Franconian” – are available at many stands at the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt. But the Liebermann booth offers a one-of-a-kind taste treat, because Fritz Stahlmann roasts his sausages over a real wood fire – and you can taste the difference!

Tasty and Decorative Ein echtes Original auf dem MarktLiebermann’s “Engelstreff”

It looks back on a long tradition and – like mulled wine – is indelibly linked with Christmas: Nuremberg gingerbread. Thanks to the trading links of its cosmopolitan merchants, the city developed early on into a gingerbread capital, for the gingerbread makers were continually supplied with almonds, cinnamon and other spices. The woods around Nuremberg also helped furnish an essential component – natural honey. Today this specialty, which under EU law can be produced only within the city limits, is found in round as well as square shapes, coated with chocolate or a sugar icing or plain with almonds.

This heated hut in the Engelsgasse near the Christmas Market invites you to stop and enjoy for a while. With a glass of champagne, vintage mulled wine (white, red or rose) or a snow-globe Christmas beer from the Privatbrauerei Glossner from Neumarkt, you’ll warm up fast in a cozy atmosphere. And if you’re hungry, there’s currywurst, which can be enjoyed mild or spicy as well as bratwurst with sauerkraut.

Be sure not to miss the Nuremberg anise-flavored cookie with an embossed design, also called a “Springerle” or “Reiterle”. It is made of eggs, flour and fine sugar, and produced by pressing the dough into a mold. This delicious and decorative treat is usually hung on the Christmas tree and later eaten.

Nuremberg was once an imperial residence, a powerful free imperial city and an international trading center. The prosperous city provided the ideal basis for an active cultural and intellectual life and the arts: Even today, numerous buildings, monuments and artworks still reflect its former importance.

Nuremberg’s medieval beer brewing tradition is the source of the city’s historical rock-cut cellars.

With more than 22,000 sqm of space, the cellars form the largest contiguous labyrinth of cellars in southern Germany. After an underground tour, a culinary treat awaits at the Altstadthof Brewery, with traditional Nuremberg ”Rotbier” and other specialties. Audioguide in English.

… with a historical street carThe classic old trams become a holiday messenger during the Christkindlesmarkt: During the enjoyable 50-minute ride, the conductor will talk about the history and tell stories about the sights along the route.
