The Focused Cargo Network in partnership with China Cargo Alliance has recently concluded its 2nd Annual Conference at Marriott Hotel Shenzhen Nanshan last September 21 – 24, 2016. This joint conference was attended by 200 fowarders who gathered to meet their fellow members and other participants from different countries across the globe. The event aims to open more doors of business opportunities and strengthen ties among the members.

On the 2nd day of the event, the delegates were accompanied at Condesa 5+6 Room Foyer for the Conference Assembly. The registration and scheduler pick-up was also done before lunchtime. The most awaited Face-to-Face meetings of delegates started in the morning and ended at 4pm. David Abrenilla, Global Network Director of Focused Cargo Network gives network updates & developments. Then Followed by the important announcement of REACH Director Nils Walle that REACH will be part of Focused Cargo Network.

Afterwards, the delegates were gathered for a group photo and they had a coffee break before the meeting started. After lunch, the first face-to-face meetings started at the Grand Ballroom from 2pm to 5pm onwards. The day ended with a gala dinner that everyone enjoyed.

The 3rd day of the joint conference was a remarkable day for all the delegates. There was an assembly at the hotel main entrance in preparation for the group outing at Shenzhen Lianhuashan Park, Shenzhen Mangrove Nature Reserve. Amidst the sunny day, delegates enjoyed the scenic view and astounding landmarks during event outing. In the afternoon, everyone traveled back to the hotel for the evening cocktail assembly. The delegates were able to relax and enjoy the night at Future One Restaurant in Oct Bay.

On the last day of the conference, the face-to-face meeting was continued from 9 in the morning onwards with coffee breaks and lunch in between. The delegates attended their scheduled meetings respectively. They ended the conference with a smile on their faces, bringing to their home a great memory of friendship and more opportunities that are beneficial to their business.

Just this November 2016, REACH E-Commerce Logistics Specialty Group Director & Co-founder Nils Walle hasattended the Asian Logistics and Maritime Conference (ALMC) in Hong Kong on November 22 to 23, 2016 and one of topics discussed is the latest developments in China’s cross border e-commerce industry and the emergingopportunities for the retail and logistics industries.

While above are the key factors for Dr. Guo of AliExpress, for eBay Senior Directo Zheng Changqing, Connectivity is a key element in the E-Commerce industry, providing consumers the necessary information they need.

“Connectivity is a key element in terms of how easily people can exchange information and how fast online shops can deliver information to consumers. Consumer really want to track their packages and know who is handling them”, eBay Senior Directo Zheng Changqing said.

AliExpress is a global E-commerce company, enabling consumers from around the world to buy directly fromwholesalers and manufacturers in China.

One of the panel speakers are Dr. Guo Dongbai, the CTO of AliExpress (Alibaba) and Zheng Changqing, Senior Director of eBay Inc. Both speakers expressed possibility on the new demand in the e-commerce industry and give several advise on how to keep up.

According to Zheng, there are 3 things that should be on top for the traditional warehouse players to adapt thegrowing world of e-commerce. Below are his keynotes.

The most important thing for warehouse operators is to strategically analayze and think where they should set-up their warehouses and what would be the content. The larger the country or the bigger the economic size is, the number of warehouse should also increase.

beyonD chinA -looking AbroADDuring the last five years, many companies sourcing and producing goods in China began to establish operations in Vietnam, where labour costs were significantly lower. Often supplementing - rather than totally substituting - their China factories, this has become known as the ‘China plus One’ sourcing strategy. However, in line with the increase in demand, we are now seeing some wage inflation in Vietnam, particularly in the southern commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City.

When exploring alternative options, it is also important to appreciate the differences in labour productivity - workers in less developed economies may be less productive. A critical but somewhat elusive labour metric to understand is factory production output per employee hour or day. Companies must not overlook that China has now been doing labour intensive manufacturing for over twenty five years. In some lower labour-cost locations around South East Asia, there are reported to be employee productivity differential ratios of 2:1 (and more, in some cases) in relation to factory output; meaning that if you had a 2,000 worker factory in China and you moved that production elsewhere, then you would need 4,000 workers to achieve the same levels of production output.

Over time, as new locations achieve critical mass and economies of scale, and workers benefit from on the job training and experiential learning, then employee productivity will gradually improve – as it has done in China over more than two decades.

This productivity factor reinforces that companies should not get totally seduced by the headline grabbing hourly labour rates. Direct labour cost is very important, but it is just one component in the whole mix.
