Nature of the WorkIndividuals with a degree in Construction Engineering Technology possess the skills and abilities to be employed in a wide variety of occupations, all related to the construction field. Some examples of these occupations include drafters, material sales, contracting, estimating, and product research. Construction Engineering Technicians use the principles and theories of science, engineering and mathematics to solve technical problems in research, development, manufacturing, sales, construction, and maintenance. Their work is more limited in scope and more practically oriented than that ofscientists and engineers.

Working ConditionsMost Construction Engineering Technicians work in offices designed to accommodate their tasks through computer design hardware and software. Most work a traditional 40-hour week in an office setting and in the field, but may work longer hours during the outdoor construction season.

EmploymentOverall employment in this career field is expected to grow about as fast as the average in the immediate future. Opportunities should be best for individuals with at least two years of post-secondary training in a drafting and construction technology program that provides strong technical skills. As technology continues to advance, employers will look for engineering technicians with a strong background in construction technology, a high level of technical sophistication, and an ability to apply this knowledge to a broad range of construction activities.
