IntroductionAbout StyroSTYRO was established with the primary objective of creating innovative solutions to cope with the challenge of heat. The founders teamed up to put their vision and passion into reality. In the year 2000, they set up a company in Sharjah with minimal resources and staff.

During this time, the concept of Polystyrene was completely new to the construction and insulation industry. However, with the appropriate technical expertise and vision of the owners a myriad of applications were discovered. A couple of years later, and with the increasing demand, STYRO decided to expand and another bigger factory was established; in addition to an office in Oman.

STYRO’s achievements are the outcome of its quality products and service-delivery where the creative minds make the company unique in the field of Expanded Polystyrene. By constantly exploring new possibilities, STYRO introduced the Packing and Packaging concept. After which the Art and Decoration department was set up due to the rapid progression in the UAE.

“STYRO” Pipe Insulation STYRO Pipe Insulation (with / without Facing)

By virtue of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) pipe section’s physical and thermal properties, it is widely utilized as an insulating material to insulate the chilled water systems to prevent the condensation and to protect against freezing. Besides, EPS Pipe sections are extensively used to insulate the Refrigerant pipes and other utility lines in the cold stores, thus preventing refrigeration losses and condensation. Generally working efficiency of the Refrigerant equipments will obviously depend on the quality and reliability of the Insulation material used, in such circumstances, EPS pipe insulation dictates that it is nothing but the best insulation material. Expanded polystyrene pipe sections which are used for HVAC (Heat Ventilation Air Conditioning) applications need foil reinforced Kraft facing. Aluminum foil facing improves vapor permeability, fire resistant property, and enhances aesthetic look. STYRO can do plain or stucco aluminum cladding at the site if the specification demands.

“STYRO” Void FormersSTYRO EPS blocks have excellent compressive strength, good workability and durability. It is widely used in modern bridges as a filler material which saves substantial concrete and cost.

Styro EPS is also used as a void former in bridges for service and utility piping usage. STYRO EPS meets and exceeds the technical specifications of (American Association of State High-way and Transportation Officials) “AASHTO” STANDARDS. STYRO EPS void formers are used to create void spaces, void shapes and holes through moulding cement around bodies of STYRO EPS.

When the cement solidifies, the STYRO EPS is easily removed and therefore there is a blank space. This is used to build spaces for cables, plumping pipes and electrical networks within the walls/structures of buildings.

“STYRO” Piling and Guide WallSTYRO EPS cylinders are used as shore piling and guide walls in the construction industry for loose soil foundation. These cylinders can be made in any size & design using high tech CAD/CAM cutting machines with good accuracy and consistency . Styro EPS Voids can be used conveniently for sequent & continues guide wall shuttering works. Normally “SSS” is supplied in two components, one is thick honey like semi-liquid and the other is in a white powder form.

For fast and reliable bonding applications, both components can be mixed together on equal ratios to prepare a paste. For example, adhesive and powder can be used as spot application for bonding purpose.

Since it cures at a faster rate, it is recommended to prepare the paste only in small quantities as and when required.

“STYRO” Boards (Injected Panels)In extremely hot climates in the Gulf Region, energy demand for the air conditioning is constantly increasing. Using STYRO Boards as insulation for the buildings is one of the best ways to conserve energy and to achieve good living comfort. STYRO Board is a versatile polystyrene foam insulation product offering excellent insulation properties at a low cost with a wide range of available thicknesses & densities for various applications such as roof, cavity wall and floor insulation.

STYRO Board insulation is available in panels with shiplap joints (It has the long term R-Value- “Thermal resistence” compared to any other insulation available in the market). It comes in standard size of 1000 L x 500 W mm with different thickness that varies from 50 mm to 100 mm; higher thickness can be achieved with multi layers. STYRO Board is normally light blue in color but can be customized to any color as per requirement.

“STYRO” EPS for Pontoon and BuoySTYRO EPS can be used for a variety of floatation devices, such as rafts, docks and pontoons. They are suitable for fresh and salt water and are unaffected by severe weather conditions. Since EPS is lightweight and easy to work with installation and maintenance costs are low. EPS buoyancy systems are safe for the environment. They are ozone friendly, no CFCs are used in the production process and they have no food value for marine animals. EPS floatation structures exhibit excellent rebound characteristics with minimum rocking.

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) giant blocks are manufactured with high–tech machines in a fully automated plant with stringent quality control. These blocks are stored in a big warehouse for curing. Later it will be cut in to sheets, small blocks, pipe section and different shapes according to the customer’s requirements.

Since it has good physical, mechanical properties & light weight, easy to handle and can be produced in big volumes within short periods. In modern days it has become the favorite choice to civil and structural engineers. STYRO Beads are light weight, white color, fire retardant, pearl shaped and closed cell Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) beads. The diameter of the beads normally ranges from 3 to 12 mm with apparent density of 8-15 Kgs/m3.

STYRO polystyrene Beads are also widely consumed by the Ready-mix suppliers for light weight screed production which has remarkable characteristics of Thermal cum Acoustic properties where used by the construction industries.

Normally EPS beads are mixed with concrete to increase its thermal rating and reduce its weight per cubic meter in turn significant saving in structural cost.

“STYRO” Recycled Beads“STYRO” EPS loose or recycled beads can also be used for soil improvement, free draining and to improve soil aeration. It can be used for potting & plantation applications or simply around planting beds. Prime or Recycled beads are ideal for various agricultural applications as it is made of 95% air, therefore extremely safe and above all, non-toxic. It offers environmental advantages and has many useful properties like lightness and thermal insulation. “STYRO” Loose beads ENHANCE TOTAL POROSITY AND MOISTURE RETENTION OF THE SOIL TO A GREATER EXTENT, which encourages growth of the roots (plant growth).

To find a new technology for control of immature stages of mosquitoes the expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads were used for mosquito and larvae control.

“STYRO” ChipsSTYRO packing chips / beads are the most convenient forms of packing and packaging for fragile objects, especially gifts and over-the-seas shipped packages. The chips / beads form a high-resistance pad that envelopes the object and therefore protects it from shocks, sudden movements and sudden temperature changes. STYRO packing chips are very light, occupy volume and could be packed in boxes of all sizes and shapes.

PUR, PIR & Phenolic Foam

descrIPtIon

Polyisocynerate (PIR), Polyurethane (PUR) and Phenolic belong to similar families; however all are different in fire rating. All these foam types are manufactured from organic polymers formed by a reaction between a polyol (an alcohol with more than two reactive hydroxyl groups per molecule) with a polyisocyanate or a polymeric isocyanine in the presence of suitable catalysts and additives.

CFC free, Environment friendly, Fire-retardant, excellent thermal conductivity & thermal resistance. Highest densities are possible up to 120 Kgs/m3.

aPPlIcatIons

PUR, PIR Phenolic foam can be used as insulation for buildings and technical applications like heat exchangers, cooling pipes in process plants, duct insulation in HVAC industries, core material for sandwich, insulation panels. It can be used for void filling, water proofing, floatation and light weight concrete applications.

Rock Wool

Rockwool slabs are semi rigid panels, which are manufactured from stable stone fibers and bonded with minimum quantity of thermosetting resin binder. Rock wool material is capable of withstanding an extreme temperature up to 750⁰ C. Rock wool is light in weight, strong, re-silent, and easy to handle and cut to suit intricate shapes.

Insulation Fasteners (Anchors)descrIPtIon and aPPlIcatIons

Plastic fasteners are designed to fast insulation fixing systems that are commonly used by insulation fixing technicians during installation. Unlike conventional fasteners, Styro-plastic fasteners/ anchors are user friendly, which saves fixing time and in turn saves installation cost. These fasteners are designed to suit all type of insulation materials such as EPS, XPS, PUR / PIR, Rock Wool & Glass Wool.

InstallatIon Procedures

1. Drill a hole through the insulation and further 45mm

2. Position the anchors / fastener in the insulation

3. Using light hammer blows insert the anchor until the head of the anchor is in contact.

4. Needs 4 -5 pieces per square meter area.


Closed Cell Polyethylene SheetsExtruded polyethylene EPE is a closed cell, flexible, non-cross linked Polyethylene insulation manufactured from low density Polyethylene as a base material with blowing agent of butane.

Extruded Polystyrene (XPS)descrIPtIon

Extruded polystyrene rigid foam with special skin is manufactured by a continuous extrusion process which imparts a characteristic of closed cell structure giving product its unique physical properties. Extruded polystyrene rigid boards have high resistance to water absorption, good physical and thermal properties. It is available with shiplap joints, tongue & groove edges depend on application.

Extruded polystyrene boards are used as insulation for roofs, cavity walls, floors and perimeter insulation. XPS boards are also used as wall cladding insulation & void filling.

Standard size of the panel is 1250 Lx600 W and the thickness may vary from 20 mm to 100mm max. Multi-layers can be used to achieve higher thickness.


“STYRO” EPS and the EnvironmentThe Manufacturing of “Styro” produces no Ozone Depleting gases and uses no CFCs, HCFC, or its elements. For each kilogram of oil used in the manufacturing of “Styro” insulation, savings of up to 200kg of heating or cooling fuel can be made over the average life of a house. In turn, this plays a positive role in reducing carbon dioxide emissions, thus minimizing the effects of Global Warming.

“Styro” Products do not degrade into harmful substances or contaminate ground water.

Several LIFE CYCLE ANAYLSIS of STYRO EPS(Expanded Polstyrene) products have shown that STYRO EPS has far less impact on the environment than other competitive materials for the same use.

“Styro” products can help to save energy as well as lives. The energy used to produce polystyrene foam insulation for a typical house is regained after only one year through the amount of energy saved.

ODP=0 – The ODP or (Ozone Depletion Potential) is the potential for a single molecule of the refrigerant to destroy the Ozone Layer. All of the refrigerants use R11 as a datum reference and thus R11 has an ODP of 1.0. The less the value of the ODP the better the refrigerant is for the ozone layer and therefore the environment.

It is also physically and chemically inert. It contains no known biological or physiological irritant, thus it is Environment Friendly, since it has no chlorine content, no Ozone Depletion Potential and only a modest Global Warming Potential.

EPS and fire

eFFect oF heat on stYro ePs

When STYRO EPS is heated it softens and at about 150ºC it begins to shrink. This continues until it is reduced to its original density prior to expansion. Continued heating will melt it to liquid and then a combustible gas will form above 200ºC. This gas can be ignited at temperatures between 360ºC and 380ºC, and will self ignite around 500ºC. When burning, it produces 40 – 45 MW/Kg of heat. Temperatures of this magnitude usually occur only in well developed fires.

FlammabIlItY

As with many construction and packaging materials, STYRO EPS must be considered combustible. Its fire behavior depends on the type of material and its application conditions. All STYRO EPS used in construction and decoration products contain a Flame Retardant conforming to AS 1366, part 3 – 1992.

smoke and dangerous gas emIssIons

The burning of STYRO EPS is less harmful than burning timber and many other commonly used building materials. Gases released during combustion are predominantly carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Tests carried out in accordance with ASTM E84 show that the levels of dangerous gases are considerably less than those occurring when burning timber.

Recycling“STYRO” is fully committed to recycling expanded polystyrene (EPS), manufacturing waste and converting STYRO EPS into other products. Our recycling facilities serve EPS end-users, building and construction sites, and other Extruded Polystyrene manufacturers. EPS fused products are chemically neutral. They may be disposed off without any problems. STYRO EPS does not react with ground water nor produce any gases when dumped. Due to its lightweight cellular structure it assists the aeration of sanitary landfills and burns completely in refuse incinerators.

hYdroPonIcs Plants usIng exPanded PolYstYrene sheets

Almost any plant can be grown in a hydroponic system. To grow plants in a liquid mineral solution rather than soil, nutrients normally supplied from soil come from a commonly available formulation that is mixed into water. In a water culture, a huge sheet of polystyrene can be floated on a nutrient solution with holes cut out for each plant and an air stone in the nutrient solution used to aerate the water. As the plants use up the nutrients and water, the plants stay in contact with the nutrient solution as the polystyrene sheet simply floats. Very efficient, easy to set up and very easy to maintain.

General InstructionsStoring STYRO EPS products ensure adequate firefighting equipment and sufficient fire exits that are kept clear at all times.

All STYRO EPS products can be colored with Water based paints; however oil paints can be applied with special protection coating.

STYRO EPS products can’t be exposed to direct sun light in order to avoid Ultraviolet (UV) degradation.

STYRO EPS boxes are made with FOOD grade EPS raw materials that are combustible.

Fire retardant grade EPS products should not be used for FOOD packaging applications in order to avoid food contamination. STYRO uses food grade EPS RM for packaging applications.

STYRO EPS products have very good resistance to several chemicals. However, it has Zero resistance to petroleum based solvents & resins.
