Parametric Sun ScreenNobrow Coffee Shop, Salt Lake City, Utah

The Parametric Sun Screen Project focused on creating a shading structure for Nobrow Coffee Shop in Salt Lake City, Utah. As a group we approached this design problem with the goal of bringing color back to a site that was otherwise lacking. We did this by creating a parametric rowed box system. Adding colored plexi glass panels within certain boxes to create shadow through the metal structure and diffusion of light through the panels.

With this structure being built, as a group we wanted to focus on the execution of it. Each row of boxes was welded to the other on the underside to hide the connection. We also had each clip that held the plexi glass panel in 3D printed, and screwed to the frame. Creating a seamless and clean look to the structure, as well as creating a easy way to switch out panels.

Moments of PauseGreen River, Utah

The Moments of Pause project in Green River, Utah focused on creating opportunities for the viewer to be able to pause and appreciate the beauty that Green River has. We did this by creating three docks along the river that were placed at heights of past floods. Allowing the viewer to not only experience the river but experience the river from past water levels.

Each deck that we created also had the year and the height of the water level routed into the deck. Allowing the viewer to know exactly how high the water was as well as what year the higher water levels occurred. This gave them another layer of information that they could experience about the river.

Midway StudyChicago, Illinois

The Midway Study was created while working in an intensive five week studio that was embedded in CannonDesign’s Chicago office. While working closely with the partners of the firm we imagined an experimental proposal for a 2050 redevelopment of the Midway Airport and transit system for all of Chicago.

Vocational SchoolChicago, Illinois

The Vocational School project in Chicago, Illinois focused on creating a school that emphasized digital fabrication. My goal was to create views into the fabrication shop from wherever you were within the school. Allowing the students, teachers, or guest to see what the school was creating for the city.

Continuing the focus on digital fabrication we were asked to adapt our Parametric Screen Project into the design of the facade on the building. How I approached this was to take the idea of the squares and change the size of the squares as they got farther away from the heart of the building, the fabrication shop.

The Writer’s Colony project in Lakeview, Montana was a two part project. First creating a individual writing cabin that was only 200 sq. ft. Then adapting that cabin and creating a much larger 10,000 sq. ft writers community. The final project ended up being a combination of ten small cabins connected to the larger community site.

The Writers cabin that I created focused on allowing the writer to be exposed to nature as much as possible but still be in a comfortable writing environment. I did this by isolating the writer in a glass box away from the rest of the cabin, allowing the magnificent views of Montana to be taken in.

The Writer’s Community was an adaption from the Writer’s Cabin. Taking the concept of the of the pointed structure and burying it under the ground while creating a structure that peeled away from the ground. Allowing the building to be hidden within the treed site of Lakeview, Montana.

Still focusing on the idea of the separation of the writer, I created three different buildings that each have different purposes due to the program that we were assigned. The largest of the three would be the library that was directed towards the Writer’s Cabins located up the mountain. Allowing the Writer to have direct access to the library as needed. The smallest and most private of the three buildings was the writers building. Giving the writers a different place to create their writings rather then their individual cabins. The third and most public building was the communal gathering space, directed towards the town of Lakeview, Montana. Creating a direct connection for the town, the writers, and visitors of the site to come and gather for events.
