02 / WELCOME

One of AUT’s strategic priorities is to increase our engagement with business, the professions and communities. It is vital that we do so, as engagement is the most effective way of remaining relevant in our rapidly changing world.

AUT’s Faculty of Business, Economics and Law has much to offer, from consultancy to joint research collaborations, from customised executive training programmes to connecting with our top students, and more.

An Auckland Council business survey, conducted in late 2010, showed there is an appetite for more engagement with universities, but uncertainty about how to go about it. So I encourage you to peruse this brochure and, if the time is right, get in touch. Let’s see what we can do together.

Welcome from theVice Chancellor

Why partner with theAUT Business School?

Engagement with business and the broader community is a defining feature of AUT’s Business School. Such engagement is integral to our contribution to New Zealand business and society. Some business schools around the world have become separated from business and the community and are not providing the service or critique required of them. For the AUT Business School, this is not the case, as engagement with the professions is key. It ensures that our curriculum is up-to-date and our graduates are well prepared for careers and life after university. Further, it allows our research to have impact on business as well as academic stakeholders, as we explore issues of relevance to business that not only advance knowledge, but are also of practical value.

Embedding engagement with industry into our education activities in a systematic way places the AUT Business School at the forefront of education in New Zealand. Our students benefit from connections and joint initiatives with business and the community. These contribute significantly to the AUT Business School achieving its vision of “Transforming lives, changing business”.

For the business community, the AUT Business School provides a number of opportunities, including access to thought leadership, a repository of research and consultancy expertise, high-calibre graduates, and a strong student body who can undertake industry-based projects. Furthermore, the business community can provide input into the curriculum of our Business School and help shape the development of future leaders.

The mutual benefits for the business community and the AUT Business School are significant. I look forward to augmenting and further deepening the already substantial connections we have.

In the following pages you will find many ways you can engage with the AUT Business School. Take a moment to discover what is possible – and if you have any further ideas, please get in touch. The connection starts here.

Why partnerwith the AUT Law School?

PROFESSOR CHARLES RICKETTDEAN OF LAW

No Law School can be an effective provider of high quality legal education without being committed to establishing and maintaining close links with the legal profession, peak legal bodies, and business and organisations in general. The AUT Law School aims to ensure that it has ongoing relationships with the full range of lawyers in private practice – from large city firms to smaller suburban and country firms, from the judiciary to members of the Bar, and from commercial corporations to government entities. Graduates produced by the School progress into a variety of careers, from those associated with private and public service legal practice to those where they are not practising as lawyers but are using the education they have in pursuit of other callings altogether. The establishment of the Law School in 2009 as the most recent provider of legal education in the New Zealand university system has been well received in a large range of organisations. The Law School has been the benefactor of considerable assistance already in many ways. These include sponsorship of student competitions and activities, provision of prizes and awards for student performance, and contributions to teaching programmes and other activities. We continue to be relevant and committed to an education in law for high quality students that includes, not only academic and theoretical instruction, but also practical and marketable skills including problem solving, issues identification, effective written and oral communication, and team work. We would be delighted to partner with organisations of any type that see themselves as in some way able to contribute to our activities, or wish to make suggestions as to ways in which our activities might be better focused and made more relevant to the wider community’s need. Opportunities for joint research possibilities with community and business organisations would be particularly welcome. As Dean of Law, my door is always open to any who might see themselves partnering with the School in the future. Being a partner with this new and energetic Law school would be a great opportunity to assist in fulfilling the dreams of young people seeking to become better educated about a fundamental aspect of a modern civilised society, and would be exciting and beneficial for you.

Learning and Teaching

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR GAYLE MORRISASSOCIATE DEAN LEARNING AND TEACHING

Driving compelling educational programmes requires us to be focused on the kinds of learning experiences that will equip our graduates to thrive in uncertain futures. AUT Faculty of Business, Economics and Law has a deliberate focus on authentic practice-based learning environments. This means providing learning experiences and assessments that mirror the complex work environments our students are moving into. This kind of learning requires a deep engagement with industry and our communities to ensure relevancy and currency. It happens in number of ways. We have students solving real and messy problems. Their projects can generate outcomes that have an impact beyond the classroom. We like to involve industry and the community as arbiters of the quality of project outcomes. Our students use current industry tools for analysis and communication with industry and community organisations. This kind of learning produces graduates who can better deal with ambiguity and put into practice the kind of higher order analysis and complex communication required of them as professionals, consumers and citizens. To discuss how you or your organisation might be involved in the development, delivery or support of our undergraduate of postgraduate educational programmes please contact:

most flexible programmes, with six start dates each year and class times to help fit around work and family commitments.

If you are looking to up-skill, change your career or simply looking for a new challenge, then our range of other, more tailored Professional Masters programmes could be the perfect fit. Our Masters degrees can be completed fulltime in as little as 12-16 months. Choose from:

• Master of Professional Accounting • Master of Applied Finance • Master of Global Business • Master of Marketing

Both the MBA and the Professional Masters programmes provide a Postgraduate certificate option (which can be completed in as little as four months full time) and a Postgraduate Diploma option (which can be completed in as little as eight months full time). Both provide a pathway into the Masters degree.

Embedded in our MBA and Professional Masters programmes is an opportunity for students to make a real and meaningful difference in business and the community, through an applied project. Our lecturers bring a wealth of knowledge and insight into the classroom to support this project, calling upon their distinctive combination of academic qualification and business practice experience.

Students also benefit from extensive networking opportunities with business people, and peer learning with fellow students from a range of disciplines and backgrounds. We also have an active and vibrant Alumni network that provides invaluable future development and business opportunities.

The Director of the MBA and Professional Masters programme and his team would welcome meeting you to discuss study options if you would like to explore how modules from the MBA may be customised to meet your company’s professional development needs.

10 / RESEARCH THAT MATTERS

AUT Faculty of Business, Economics and Law is committed to conducting research that matters. We pursue research that matters by building networks of sustainable long-term relationships with our external stakeholders. Our research partners work with us to identify specific problems of relevance to them and to co-create knowledge to solve those problems. Establishing key research programmes that address important societal challenges enables us to develop multi-disciplinary teams that can tackle complex issues, produce research of relevance and value to our external stakeholders, contribute to New Zealand’s social and economic goals, provide opportunities for postgraduate students to conduct research that matters, and inform what we teach our students.

Opportunities to engage with AUT Faculty of Business, Economics and Law research include working with our schools and individual researchers, sponsoring a research student’s project, or exploring common issues and interests with one of our research centres. Our research academics are recognised experts in their disciplinary fields and publish regularly in world-class journals. Many of our postgraduate research students have international backgrounds and connections that contribute to the depth and richness of the research undertaken in the Faculty. We also host a number of research centres and groups that conduct interdisciplinary research in collaboration with a wide range of external stakeholders in business, the professions, government and the community.

With close links to the New Zealand Work Research Institute, we have particularly strong expertise in employment relations and human resource management. Embracing a forward-looking ethos, we also have specialist capability in strategy, leadership, and ethics. This multi-disciplinary approach sees collaborations with researchers in everything from sociology to hospitality.

24 / MARKETING, ADVERTISING, RETAILING AND SALES

Marketing, Advertising, Retailing and Sales is one of the largest, most popular departments in the AUT Business School, with strong links between its four disciplines.

Alongside a drive to engage with current theoretical advances is the determination to connect our teaching and research to issues facing industry today. Talking points in the wider community, such as sustainability, food and alcohol branding, and shopper decision-making, are an important focus. The department also maintains a strong link with industry through a number of associations, including a partnership with the Communications Agencies Association New Zealand in the CAANZ/AUT Communications School.
